The Nets announced that Brook Lopez underwent successful surgery on his broken right foot today, and he will likely be out of action until next season.

In addition to repairing his fractured fifth metatarsal, Lopez also underwent a procedure known as a "first metatarsal osteotomy" in his right foot.

That osteotomy procedure essentially repositions a bone in the foot to help stabilize the foot, decrease stress, and help it bear weight more evenly.

It had been speculated earlier this offseason, but Mathias Kiwanuka will almost certainly be moving back to the defensive line.

Jason Pierre-Paul?s recent surgery and Justin Tuck?s string of injures over the past few seasons have all of a sudden made the depth at defensive end ? normally a position of strength for the Giants ? a bit lacking.

Even with question marks still at linebacker, Kiwanuka should factor into the Giants? rotation at defensive end. He was drafted as a d-end out of Boston College and has experience as a successful pass rusher.

On the conference call to announce the acquisition of Alexei Ponikarovsky, the Devils also announced that Dainius Zubrus will have exploratory wrist surgery and could miss anywhere from two to eight weeks.

Earlier today, the Devils placed Zubrus on injured reserve and said they would know more about him in the next 48 hours. I speculated the injury to Zubrus would cause the Devils to do some roster shuffling, which they certainly have done today with the Ponikarovsky trade, calling up Andrei Loktionov and eventually sending a player down to Albany to make room for Ponikarovsky.

Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy King confirmed Thursday that an MRI revealed point guard Deron Williams has bone spurs in his left ankle and probably will have to undergo offseason surgery to have them "cleaned up."

However, King downplayed the results and expects the injury to be "manageable."

from Paul Schwartz of the Post....

Add Kevin Boss to the list of Giants players who required surgery after this past season.

The Giants' tight end yesterday underwent a minor arthroscopic procedure to repair an issue with his hip that was lingering during the season.

Yesterday at Shea Stadium, Orlando Hernandez told reporters that he will have surgery in the next few weeks to repair the tendon in his foot, which forced him to miss much of September.

El Duque has one year and $6 million left on his contract.

?i have no problem with el duque coming back, especially at that cost?however, at no point next season can he be considered the team?s best pitcher?if he returns as a fifth starter, occasionally reliever, all under the notion that he will certainly miss a chunk of the season, maybe even the playoffs, fine?
