This is the time of year Syracuse coach Dino Babers wants his young team to fully embrace, even if it must start at No. 3 Clemson.

The Orange (4-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won two straight to head into the regular-season's final month with a bit of momentum.

"To be 4-4 at Syracuse University, where the games you remember are the ones in November," Babers said. "We are going into November where the games matter. There is something riding on it."

Syracuse rallied for a 83-65 win over Division II Indiana (Pa.) University at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday evening. Here are some notes from the game:

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim talked about playing man-to-man defense prior to the start of the season, and the Orange did exactly that on Tuesday night. It was the first time since the 2009-10 team that Boeheim strayed from his vaunted 2-3 zone. If you'll remember, Syracuse lost an exhibition to LeMoyne with a roster that eventually climbed to the No. 1 ranking in the country.

The 2015-16 Syracuse basketball team was able to reach the Final Four in part thanks to a suffocating full-court press. Once the Orange fell behind by 14, Boeheim ditched his man-to-man defense and put on the press, which allowed the Orange to rally. In particular, the small ball lineup of John Gillon, Tyus Battle, Andrew White, Tyler Lydon and Taurean Thompson was effective.

The talk bandied about Syracuse in the late 1990s and up until the '03 title team was that the program didn't produce a lot of NBA talent in comparison to the teams ahead of them on the all-time victory list -- Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, and Duke. In the post championship decade, as we see the finish line ahead for the Jim Boeheim era, this talk has fallen by the wayside.

As of Oct. 31, there are 11 ex-'Cuse players on NBA rosters and never in Boeheim's 40 previous seasons has he not had at least one future NBA player on every team he has coached.

In fact, three of Boeheim's teams have had at least six future NBA players on the same roster.

As unlikely as it seemed only a couple of weeks ago, following two straight ACC wins for just the second time in four conference seasons, and with four games to play to get perhaps a minimum of two victories to lock up a post-season bowl bid, the Syracuse football team heads into its open week with a little momentum, a ton more experience playing the schemes on both sides of the ball, and relishing the new-found national media attention that came with the Dino Babers post-Virginia Tech viral video and subsequent Sports Illustrated feature on an offense that's producing "a game that's faster than you've ever seen on turf."If there was ever a reason, and in this case a season, in which you can easily point to why there are too many bowl games to justify any sort of reward for a team having a strong year, and by that definition finishing at least at .500, it's 2016 with 41 bowl games (the two College Football Playoff semifinal winners meet in the championship game) opening up spots for a total of 82 teams.

Syracuse almost went 1-1 on Saturday, but managed to beat Boston College and not themselves. The Orange (4-4, 2-2 ACC) tried their darnedest to submarine their own efforts by turning the ball over three times, giving up five sacks, and committing 16 penalties, but managed to pull out a 28-20 win over BC on a soggy, breezy day in Chestnut Hill. The defeat extended the Eagles' (3-4, 0-4) ACC losing streak to a dozen while snapping SU's streak of eight straight conference losses on the road.

The school-record 16 infractions included a half dozen flags for false starts by the Syracuse offense. Fortunately, there were some positive notations made by the Orange in their own record book.

Eric Dungey threw for three touchdowns, Ervin Phillips had a pair of scores and Syracuse beat Boston College 28-20 on Saturday, sending the Eagles to their 12th straight Atlantic Coast Conference loss.Dungey went 32 for 38 for 434 yards. He also ran 17 times for 54 yards for the Orange (4-4, 2-2 ACC).Last week, he became the first player in school history to throw for over 300 yards and rush for over 100 in an upset victory over then-No. 17 Virginia Tech.

When Syracuse coach Dino Babers thinks about last week's victory over Virginia Tech, he thinks about his team's future, not its past."Any time you take over a new program, there's going to always be that game that everyone goes back to that turns the program," he said this week. "And hopefully three, four, five years down the road, people will point back to this game."Fresh off a 31-17 upset of the then-No. 17 Hokies, Syracuse (3-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) travels to Boston College (3-3, 0-3) to play its former Big East rivals. And Babers is hoping his biggest win yet in his first year as the Orange coach will be just the first of many.

Halfway through their first seasons at their schools, coaches Justin Fuente of Virginia Tech and Dino Babers of Syracuse are headed in different directions.

Fuente seems to have picked up where Frank Beamer left off: the Hokies (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are ranked 17th and lead the Coastal Division going into Saturday's game against the Orange in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse (2-4, 0-2 ACC) has lost four of five and faces three ranked teams in the second half of the season, its chance at the postseason seemingly out of reach already.

"There's a long season ahead of us," Fuente said. "We can take pride in winning a couple games. There's nothing wrong with that. But you've got to move past those things."

Forget those old times of futility, and don't even worry about having to play football in a hurricane. Wake Forest is winning, and the way the Demon Deacons beat Syracuse 28-9 on Saturday night was methodical.

John Wolford ran for two touchdowns and a career-best 94 yards, and threw for 140 yards to lead Wake Forest (5-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Wolford was 13 of 22 and scored from the 7 and 37-yard line in the second quarter. Cade Carney, a freshman who had missed the three previous games with a knee injury, added 104 yards rushing on 29 carries, including a fourth-quarter touchdown for the Demon Deacons.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Syracuse coach Dino Babers followed Wake Forest's Dave Clawson from Bowling Green to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Now he's trying to follow him up the Atlantic Division standings.

The former Falcons coaches will go against each other Saturday night when the uptempo Orange (2-3, 0-1) visit the Demon Deacons (4-1, 1-1).

"This is at warp speed," Clawson said of the Syracuse offense. "It's as fast an offense as I've ever seen, and it's hard to prepare for that tempo."

DeShone Kizer threw for a career-best 465 yards to help Notre Dame overcome another shaky performance by its defense and special teams and beat Syracuse 50-33 Saturday.

The Irish snapped a two-game losing streak, but did not show much defensive improvement in the first game since Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly fired coordinator Brian VanGorder. The Irish (2-3) allowed more than 30 points for the fourth time this season.

Syracuse failed its biggest early season challenge, which in retrospect shouldn't have been a big surprise. Louisville apparently is that good.

Now the Orange (2-2) have a chance to make some amends for that 62-28 home loss to the rising Cardinals in early September when they meet Notre Dame (1-3) on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The game gives Syracuse an opportunity on a national stage in an NFL stadium to show that first-year coach Dino Babers has the Orange pointed in the right direction. They're coming off a 31-24 road win over UConn that snapped a two-game skid.
