Former Syracuse center and first-round draft pick Fab Melo died on Saturday at the age of 26 in his home country of Brazil.
Melo was found dead by his mother on Saturday morning, according to authorities. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told ESPN that the cause of death is not yet known.
Melo played for Syracuse for two seasons, earning Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2012. The Boston Celtics drafted him with the 22nd overall pick in the 2012 draft, but he eventually returned to Brazil to play professionally. Most recently, he played for Brasilia.
Boeheim tweeted on Saturday to express his condolences, noting that Melo "was committed to doing his best while he was at Syracuse."
"Our staff and his teammates were fortunate to have had the opportunity to know Fab," Boeheim said in his tweet. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
