Penalties hurt Jets in loss 00:01:39
The Jets looked like they were going to beat the Titans at home. Ultimately falling short as penalties riddled the team in the 26-22 loss.

There are many things that have become trademarks of the Todd Bowles era. One big one is that the Jets simply never learned how to finish games.

And that's exactly what happened to them in Tennessee on Sunday afternoon.

They fought hard and played a gritty game all day, building a 16-point first-half lead and still leading by nine points heading into the fourth quarter. Then they melted down on both sides of the ball and lost their sixth straight game, 26-22 to the Titans.

THE GAME

The Jets (3-8) at the Tennessee Titans (5-6) at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 4:05 p.m.

THE WEATHER

It should be a beautiful day in Music City, with temperatures in the mid-60s when the game kicks off and plenty of sunshine.

WHAT IT MEANS

Not much. That's especially true if veteran Josh McCown starts the game - which seems likely since rookie Sam Darnold was limited at practice all week and is listed as "questionable." At this point, it's hard to see what the Jets would get out of starting a 39-year-old quarterback. If I were them, I'd rather get a look at third-string Davis Webb. But if somehow Darnold does return after a two-game absence he'll have a chance to reverse the freefall he was in before his injury. And it's important that he does. This entire season has been about Darnold and his growth and building towards possibly contending for the playoffs next season. So far he's shown he's not ready for that. But this is the time of year when rookie quarterbacks usually start to turn things around and show why they were picked where they were. The Jets don't need to be convinced that they made the right choice with Darnold. They're confident of that. But they definitely want to see some improvement so they can feel a little better about next year.

The Jets were more competitive this week, but still fell 27-13 to the AFC East-leading New England Patriots. Let's review three of the best and worst performances from Sunday's game.

Losers

CB Morris Claiborne

Claiborne only gave up a couple of catches in this game, but they were big plays, as Tajae Sharpe was able to get some extra yards at the end of the play on a 28-yard catch-and-run and Taywan Taylor burned him over the top for a 44-yard catch to set up a field goal.

Decker, 30, played 33 games with the Jets over the past three seasons, totaling 163 catches, 2,183 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns.

Decker had appeared healthy entering organized team activities in May after he missed 13 games last season due to rotator cuff and hip injuries.

New York released him last Monday when they were unable to find a trading partner. The Jets will face a $1.5 million cap hit this year and next after releasing Decker.

Kashif (via e-mail): I was wondering; how is Calvin Pryor holding up in coverage this year, both in man to man

assignments and zone coverage? I saw Delanie Walker, the Titans tight end, still managed to have a productive day even though they lost big. How much was Pryor to blame?

None of Walker's six catches came against Pryor. (Four were against Buster Skrine and the other two came against Marcus Gilchrist). Pryor was, of course, at fault on the gadget play touchdown to Mariota though.

Got a?Case of the Mondays? Fear not! Columnist and TheJetsBlog Podcast co-host?Corey Griffin?has you covered every?Monday?morning with thoughts, ideas and opinions about all things Jets.Evaluating the AFC playoff picture through only 10 weeks is akin to watching an 87-year-old put together a puzzle without his glasses. It looks a little jumbled, there?s definitely some pieces missing and it?ll probably be a while before the picture looks coherent.

For all their dominance, the Broncos are buoyed by a 38-year-old quarterback with failing legs. Their chief rival for the No. 1 seed, undefeated Kansas City, is not nearly as imposing as their record, despite a No. 1 scoring defense and Jamaal Charles? MVP campaign. The Patriots, when healthy, look like the AFC?s best team, but they won?t be 100 percent any time this season. Meanwhile, the Colts were just worked in their own building by a Brian Schottenheimer and Kellen Clemens-led offense and the Bengals continue to ebb and flow on Andy Dalton?s schizophrenic arm (and head).

When the Titans come to town tomorrow, Vince Young will be under center as Tennessee's starting quarterback. After he was benched last week, however, and given what's taken place with quarterbacks around the league so far this season, Kerry Collins may get?a shot at some point during Sunday's game. Basically, if Young plays well he stays in. If not, don't be surprised if Jeff Fisher goes to Collins just like he did last week in the Titans' 19-11 loss to the Steelers. This despite the fact that Fisher said this week that Young is, and will continue to be, the starting quarterback.

Young had two interceptions and a fumble in the loss last week, and he was benched for the fourth quarter. Immediately after lifting Young, Fisher said he did it to jump-start his team, and that there's no quarterback controversy in Tennessee. We've heard that before, however. Andy Reid said the same thing one day about Kevin Kolb. The next day, Michael Vick was the Eagles' starter.

Young was Collins' backup last year when the Titans started 0-6. The Titans are 1-1 as they head into East Rutherford. Young will have to play well or else Collins will get the chance to?reintroduce himself to Giants' fans.

With the 29th pick in the 2009 draft, the Giants selected North?Carolina's?Hakeem Nicks. They could have?taken Kenny Britt, a 6-foot-4 wide receiver out of Rutgers. Britt ended up going to the Titans?with the 30th pick. The two will be on the same field Sunday when the Titans come to the New Meadowlands Stadium to play the Giants. The Giants were high on Nicks. They liked his hands, how he ran routes, and?his ability to gain?yards after the catch. In his rookie season a year ago,?Nicks caught 47?passes for 790 yards and six touchdowns. Britt had 42?catches for 701 yards and three touchdowns.

What's happened since, however, tells a different story. Mr. Britt had a rough offseason. He showed up to minicamp overweight. Titans coach Jeff Fisher threatened to take him off the active list during the preseason and, having dropped to the third receiver spot, the Titans didn't throw to Mr. Britt once in last week's game.
