Former Giant CB Terrell Thomas, who successfully returned to the field in 2013 after missing two seasons to ACL tears, may have played his last game in the NFL.

From Rotoworld:

In a radio interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, free agent CB Terrell Thomas said teams are concerned about his surgically-repaired knee.

Back-to-back tears of the same ACL sidelined Thomas for 2011 and 2012, but he came back last season to play 588 solid snaps for the Giants. In the interview, Thomas cited his healthy 2013 season as proof he can stay on the field and be a solid contributor on defense. NFL teams might not be so optimistic, but Thomas will almost surely find a job once injuries start to mount in training camp. A possible landing spot could be Detroit, who worked out Thomas at the end of May and recently cut ties with free agent CB Chris Houston.

Thomas was selected by the Giants in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft (63rd overall) and after an injury-marred rookie season, went on to lead the Giants in tackles the next two seasons. Although Thomas was one of Big Blue's most productive players the past few seasons, he did not participate in either of the team's Super Bowl victories.

In my opinion, the Giants best player on the team so far, comes from the safeties unit. Antrel Rolle has been one of the game's premier defensive players this year and has held down the Giants backfield each and every week. Rolle has been the voice of the team for many weeks and has attempted to do his best to instill confidence in his team and reassure the fans that the team will turn their season around. Even more importantly, his play on the field and ability to adapt to different defensive formations has showcased his value to Big Blue's defense.

"Antrel is everywhere. He has played corner, he?s played strong safety, he?s played free safety, he?s played nickel and he?s done that from day one since he arrived and it?s no different this year," said safeties coach David Merritt. "That young man studies more than any safety I have in the sense that he comes to me all the time and he?s asking about certain plays and we sit and we chat about the plays that he asks about and it?s tremendous to have a kid that way."

CB Terrell Thomas is getting closer and closer to 100% with each passing day. ?He's feeling confident he's going be on this team come August 31st, but not sure when he's going to play in a game as of yet. He says he has to prove to the coaches that he is physically able to play in the NFL again.

T2's comeback from his second ACL surgery in two years (and third overall) has been intentionally slowed by the Giants' medical staff who are being very cautious with the veteran corner. They know they have no margin for error. Thomas' career is on the line.

Terrell Thomas' short stay on PUP was not due to his knee not being ready, but rather a hamstring strain.

"I strained it during the conditioning test," Thomas said this morning. "It wasn?t bad. I was actually supposed to practice last week, but they just wanted to give me a couple more days of rest. I know the defense and I?m proven here. I just have to stay healthy and get back to my old ways."

Thomas is on a "slower" schedule, but feels he can be ready for the start of the regular season....

Cornerback Terrell Thomas is only 28-years-old, but he has not played an NFL game in nearly two and a half years. Coming off ?his second reconstructive knee surgery, he may finally be ready for a return to form.

?Right now, to be honest with you, I feel great,?? he said on his website yesterday. ?I am not 100 percent. I would say I am 85 percent to 90 percent. The only thing missing is real field work, going against my teammates, the grind of practice and seeing how my knee handles all that.??

Thomas started all 16 games at cornerback for the Giants in his second and third years in the league, peaking in 2010 with five interceptions and four forced fumbles. Back to back injuries to the same knee forced him out of the last two seasons.

Giants' DB Terrell Thomas (T2) is aiming for a spot on the Giants' roster this fall. Normally, the former second-round pick would be penciled in at CB for the Blue, but this time around he'll be just another hopeful in camp.

Thomas, who led the Giants in tackles in 2009 and 2010, has missed the past two seasons with ACL tears. Add those two tears to the one he sustained in college at USC, and T2 once again finds himself in the all-too-familiar situation of a coming back from injury.

Giants? defensive coordinator Perry Fewell met the media at the conclusion of Big Blue?s minicamp to discuss the state of his defense.

And one theme was apparent throughout the whole 10-minute interview: The only thing that matters is when the pads come on.

But Fewell did say he likes where the unit is right now.

DB Terrell Thomas is here at minicamp but not participating in team drills. He is still rehabbing from ACL surgeries that have sidelined him the past two seasons.

In 2011, the Giants won a Super Bowl without him and then failed to qualify for the postseason last year. In both campaigns he was sorely missed. The former USC star was the Giants' leading tackler in 2009 and 2010. Since then, no Giant cornerback has even come close to matching his production.

In Mel Kiper Jr.'s first two-round mock draft, the longtime NFL Draft prognosticator suggests the New York Giants will select a cornerback and linebacker, respectively, with their first and second-round picks.

At No. 19, Kiper projects the Giants to draft cornerback Desmond Trufant from the University of Washington. The 6-foot, 190-pound former Huskie impressed at the NFL Combine, solidifying his status as a first-round talent.

NFL.com compares Trufant to Cardinals cornerback Antoine Cason, praising him for his size, athleticism and short-area foot quickness. However, experts believe he'll have to improve his overall strength on the professional level.

There's a lot to like about Washington DB Desmond Trufant, whose draft stock has been rising of late.

The Giants have been connected to a number of different players with the 19th selection in April's NFL Draft, most of which has centered around the team's moves during free agency.

Among the names floated around have been Tyler Eifert, the tight end from Notre Dame, Alec Ogletree, the linebacker out of Georgia, and Datone Jones, the defensive lineman out of UCLA.

Recently re-signed CB Terrell Thomas appeared on the NFL Network this morning and made some interesting comments.

First off, he is rehabbing well and expects to compete for a roster spot this summer. Second, he thought the 'youth movement' in the secondary took a toll on the defense in 2012.

T2 also believes there will be quite a bit of contract restructuring this spring in order to give the Giants the cap relief they need. He also believes Tom Coughlin may be looking to retire after this season....

Details of Terrell Thomas' restructured contract have been released. It is a one-year contract at the minimum.

From SNYGiants insider Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News:

If Terrell Thomas had somehow stayed healthy last season and played well enough for the Giants to keep him under his old contract, he would've soon received a $6 million bonus and earned another $750,000 in 2012.

In August of 2011, CB Terrell Thomas blew out his right ACL and missed the entire season. Last August, the Giants were hopeful that Thomas would be able to come back and bolster their challenged secondary. It didn't happen. He re-injured the knee and was placed on season-ending IR once again.

T2 has had three surgeries on that knee but is more determined than ever to complete his comeback. ?When he does, he may not be at corner any longer. The Giants have hinted Thomas may be moved to safety.

Thomas is currently under contract through 2015 but only $1 million of the $17.4 million deal he received last March from the Giants is guaranteed.

Fifth-year cornerback Terrell Thomas is recovering from his third ACL injury.

With three years before he hits the free agent market, Giants general manager Jerry Reese is considering new ways to use ?to use Thomas, including moving him to safety.

"Terrell obviously has the multiple knee surgeries so he will have to tread lightly on that and see where he is physically," Reese said on Thursday during an interview on WFAN. "Right now, he is still rehabbing. We will definitely reach out to him and see where he is and see if he is going to be able to try to make another comeback."

Despite rumors and reports, the Giants cannot place injured CB Terrell Thomas on IR and then bring him back for the second half of the season.

The rule, which would have allowed teams to bring back one player from IR after six weeks, was voted on and approved by the owners in May but still has not been ratified by the NFLPA. The existing rules remain in place.

The Giants will have to carry Thomas on their active roster until he gets healthy, much like they did with Will Beatty and Prince Amukamara last season.

Giants' CB Terrell Thomas is my choice for key player of 2012. He is the glue of the Giants' defense. Even though the Blue won a championship without his services last year, don't expect a repeat unless Thomas comes out and plays like his old self.

Healthy and ready to rock at training camp, Thomas - who was the team's leading tackler in 2010 and 2011 - is confident he can return to form. If he does, the Giants will have one of the NFL's top defenses. Pit that alongside the team's already potent offense and ...well, you get the picture...

If you were to put together a list of 10 players whose presence could make or break the Giants 2012 season, an exercise taken up in this space not too long ago by senior editor Rick Resch, it would be difficult not to include Hakeem Nicks or Terrell Thomas. Both players make their living mostly off what they do in the passing game, and any significant downturn in performance from either player could severely damage the Giants? win total this season. It?s not hard to figure out why these two players are so important. Simply put, the Giants live and die by the pass. Their 295.9 pass yards per game average last season ranked fifth league wide?a positive metric, to be sure. But their potent passing offence was somewhat offset by a horrific pass defense, which gave up an average of 255.1 pass yards per game.

My personal "key Giant" of 2012 - Terrell Thomas - has announced that he is "all cleared" for training camp, which begins in 11 days. He has worked diligently the past 11 months to ensure he's ready to resume his role on the Giants' defense.

Of all the Giants? preseason injuries last year, perhaps none was more damning than Terrell Thomas? torn ACL. Without Thomas, Aaron Ross was inserted into the starting lineup, a significant downgrade that struck a huge blow to Big Blue?s pass defense. Before the injury, the argument could be made that Thomas was the Giants? best corner. In 2010, he recorded 101 tackles and five interceptions, both team highs. Many believed he deserved a Pro-Bowl bid for his efforts, and 2011 provided the perfect opportunity for him to earn that distinction.

Counting down Jerry Reese's eleven best draft picks/ undrafted free agents

Terrell Thomas: second round (pick 63), 2008

When it was announced that Terrell Thomas would miss the entire season with a torn ACL, I basically wrote the Giants off. About twenty four hours later, I talked myself back into believing that Big Blue had a chance (turns out I was right!), but the fact is that Thomas had become such an important player that his injury was arguably the biggest hurdle the Giants had to overcome this season.

OK?well as long as no one was injured in the last ten minutes, I think I?m ready to unveil my final roster projection for 2011. We still have two preseason contests to go, but right around now is when the decisions start to become clear. So let?s jump right in with QB.

QB Keeping 2: In 2011, NFL teams now have the luxury of dressing 46 players on game day. This essentially means that the 3rd string QB is no longer an ?emergency option.? The Giants have chosen to forgo the 3rd QB all together since 2008, and I?m not so sure that changes this season. Obviously Eli is the number 1, but he heads up a current corps of 4 talented signal callers.

David Carr (first pick ever of the Houston Texans in 2002) is my favorite to win the job, and not just because he is less expensive than the other veteran alternative. Yes he is about 2 million cheaper than Sage Rosenfels, but he is also equally talented and more versatile. Quite frankly, I expected him to win the starting job in San Francisco last year and I still think he will be a starter again in this league before he retires. Rosenfels may also be trade bait for another CB (more later).

So much for going into the season with a healthy roster. The Giants lost three players in the last 24 hours to season-ending injuries.

First, CBs Terrell Thomas and Brian Witherspoon went down with knee injuries and now second-round pick DT Marvin Austin has a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the entire season as well....This is getting out of hand....

There is little in the hopper to help the corners. The team will have to make a trade, it seems. On the DL Austin will be replaced by veteran Jimmy Kennedy, who was signed today.

1. Terrell Thomas

Much like Hakeem Nicks was on the offensive side of the ball, Terrell Thomas was the breakout star of the Giants? defense.

It?s hard to imagine that going into the season, some Giants fans wanted Aaron Ross to start over Thomas opposite Corey Webster.? Thomas showed promise in his rookie season as a second round pick out of USC, and established himself as a starter in the NFL in his second season, but some still favored Ross? superior raw skills.

In his third season, Thomas took a giant step forward, improving in almost every aspect of his game.? He led the Giants with five interceptions, and his 21 passes defensed were third in the NFL.? Most impressively, he led the Giants with 101 total tackles, which is most in the NFL for a CB.? His four forced fumbles were tied for tenth in the league.
