It probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but Texas A&M associate head coach Glenn Cyprien says rival schools are using Billy Kennedy's health situation as a tool for negative recruiting.

"Hey, there's no question. It's a cutthroat profession in a lot of ways unfortunately and it has been thrown around a lot in recruiting in terms of coach's health," Cyprien said Monday on a conference call promoting the 2K Sports Classic. "Boy, you hate to see that but I guess that's the way it is when you got some programs that use the negative recruiting.

From John Calipari to Mike Krzyzewski to Jim Calhoun, the biggest names in college coaching have been beating a path to the doors of some of the top high school basketball players in the New York metropolitan area.

The NCAA contact period runs from Sept. 9 until Oct. 5, so college coaches use this time to watch prospects during open gyms and to make their recruiting pitches to kids and their parents during home visits.

This is the critical period when relationships can be made or broken and future NCAA championships can be determined.

Props to my boy Chris Chaney, the former Patterson (NC) School coach, who predicted del Potro earlier Monday (maybe before that). Someday I plan to cover Wimbledon and maybe even the Australian Open. So stay tuned for that...

As if we needed any more confirmation that Kyrie Irving's top two schools are Indiana and Duke, here comes Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle confirming that to me today in a phone call.

Irving has already said he will visit both schools officially this fall, and he has yet to name any other planned officials.

"I would not be surprised at all if he went to Indiana," said Boyle, whose team should be ranked among the top two or three in the nation this season. "There's no question that Indiana has been there all along and has done a great job recruiting him. I think they have an outstanding chance of getting him.
