The Meadowlands

36 years ago, Wellington Mara ended his franchise's nomadic trek across the Tri-State area and settled them in a new stadium in the swamp alongside I-95 in East Rutherford, NJ. New Yorkers were pissed. Fans from Connecticut, who had faithfully filled Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds for decades, weren't happy either. New Jersey fans were pleased, but even they had their druthers.

Now, no one is happy. The Giants, along with the Jets, replaced the utilitarian Giants Stadium with MetLife Stadium, a $1.6 million food court and mall with a football field in the middle of it. The fan experience is a wonderful one. Everyone raves about it. Just one problem, though.....it's still in the swamp.

Travel to and from the game is lengthier than ever, even with the addition of a NJ Transit rail spur that shuttles fans in and out of places like Secaucus and Hoboken. The parking is also still a horror. Mike Philbrick, of the esteemed sports blog Grantland.com summed it all up this week after he attended the Giants-Cowboys game the other night:

The white elephant that is taking up a huge chunk of real estate at the Meadowlands (formerly known as Xanadu - currently known as American Dream) has new challenge: a lawsuit from their neighbors.

According to John Brennan of the Bergen Record, the Giants and Jets are pursuing legal action to prevent the embattled shopping and entertainment complex from doing business on Sundays - when it does finally open in 2014. Giants' CEO John Mara is taking the lead on this one.....

Eli Manning wanted to be a better quarterback.? He had something to prove to his fans, his teammates and to himself.

Most importantly, week after week in the 2011 season Eli Manning has gotten better and delivered. While I am fresh off a plane from Boston and Gillette Stadium I happy to say I am late posting my story due to excess celebrating amongst Patriots fans.

Over all it won't matter to Eli who gets cuts today because the offense is pretty much set.? Yes, Manning is hoping for a free agent Tight End to find his way to the East Rutherford and if he cuts down his interceptions 2011 can be a playoff type of year.? His arsenal of weapons is slightly different from last year but still explosive.

Ranking Eli's best weapons:

1. WR - Hakeem Nicks - The 2009 1st round draft pick has come as advertised.? One could say he has been sniffing around pro bowl status during his two years in the NFL.? Nicks is 6' 1" and 215 lbs and his game is very similar to Michael Irvin the former Dallas Cowboy and now Hall of Fame inductee.

Final Regular Season Game At Giants Stadium This Sunday

Yes, it seems like just yesterday that the Giants had THE state-of-the-art football venue out in the Meadowlands.

I recall my first first game at the new Stadium.? It was the second home game - October 24th, 1976 vs Pittsburgh.? My brother selfishly took the tickets? to the opener two weeks prior, so I had to wait. I recall it took us awhile to get there because no one really knew any of the short cuts yet. Plus everyone was tuned up.
