Andy Graziano, SNY.TV Twitter: The injury-ravaged Islanders have won two and lost two coming out of their league-mandated bye week, but let's be honest with each other here. They only played one solid game -- a 7-2 victory at Madison Square Garden over the Rangers.

They're going to need to be much better than a .500 hockey team if they're to crawl out of an 8-13-2 funk that has them at 53 percent of possible points -- slightly ahead of the 2013-14 team that finished 34-37-11 and out of the playoffs. As a reference point, last year's team that finished shy of the postseason by one point finished at 57 percent of possible points.

So, while the team licks its wounds, whether it be Johnny Boychuk, Casey Cizikas, Calvin de Haan, Nikolay Kulemin, Andrew Ladd, or Shane Prince, they need to figure out, once and for all, what they are doing, or attempting to do, in the defensive zone to even realistically start thinking about having a shot at Lord Stanley in April...

The Islanders might have gotten lucky on Monday night against the Canadiens, but the Devils were not going to let that happen on Tuesday in a lopsided 4-1 victory.

Montreal peppered Thomas Greiss with 56 shots on Monday, but only converted on four goals as the Isles barely skated back home with the overtime win on 24 shots. But Jaroslav Halak didn't have the same magic against New Jersey, who outshot the Islanders, 42-26.

Anders Lee, who scored the Isles' only goal, knows his team can't continue allowing opponents to forecheck as they please.

John Tavares may have notched the game-winner in overtime, but the Islanders wouldn't have made it that far if it wasn't for stellar goaltending from Thomas Greiss Monday night.

The Islanders held the lead all game long, but if there wasn't a scoreboard, one would think the Canadiens were dominating with the amount of time the puck came Greiss' way. New York was largely outshot, 56-24, but Greiss totaled 52 saves to allow his team to steal a win on the road in Montreal.

"We don't get anywhere close to a win without him," Adam Pelech told Newsday's Arthur Staple. "For sure we wanted to win this one for what he did the whole game."

Islanders G Thomas Greiss ended Jaroslav Halak's six-game start streak in net Thursday night against the Flyers, but it wasn't a game to remember.

Greiss had another game where he allowed at least five goals, which is now the fifth time in the last six starts it has happened.

"In speaking with Thomas, he's frustrated," head coach Doug Weight told Newsday's Brian Heyman. "That's for sure. He looked to be aggressive...He's got to keep fighting. He battled in the third period. I thought he continued to compete and let us get back into the game in that last 15 minutes."

The New York Islanders rank second in the NHL in goals (123), trailing only the Tampa Bay Lightning. They have two of the top five point-getters in the league in John Tavares (21-24-45) and Josh Bailey (10-35-45). Tavares and Anders Lee's 21 goals are two off the league lead (Nikita Kucherov, Alex Ovechkin). Dynamic rookie Mathew Barzal is second in rookie scoring behind Vancouver's Brock Boeser (9-23-32). Jordan Eberle has been a terrific addition with 13 goals in 35 games.

The gaudy offensive numbers that propelled the Islanders to a 16-8-2 start as of Dec. 4 are all nice to look at. That brand of play indicates a team high on confidence in its goaltending, assuming the big save will come when it's needed most to ocmpensate for all their pressing in the offensive zone.

Problem is, New York's goaltenders have not held up their end of the bargain, which threatens to derail a season that has seen the team begin its ascent, from emerging stars in Barzal and Eberle to getting approval on securing a new home in Belmont, all while waiting for a contract extension with the franchise cornerstone Tavares.

The Stars got the best of the Islanders again Wednesday night, and head coach Doug Weight isn't mad due to the chances his team had all game.

The scoreboard read 5-2 at the end of three periods, but Weight didn't view it that way. The Isles had a multitude of chances to put the puck in the back of the net, but at the end of the day, the Stars converted more on their chances.

"I guarantee we had 25 good opportunities - to me it's a winnable game," Weight told Newsday's Arthur Staple. "Credit to them, they got the lead, they capitalized, but the difference (between Monday's win over the Capitals) is we probably had twice as many scoring chances."

Head coach Doug Weight believes his goaltender situation needs to be addressed as he doesn't have a definitive starter between Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak.

Greiss has been struggling of late, owning a 3.79 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage this season. Though Greiss says he's fine, Weight thinks he needs to figure out what is plaguing the veteran goalie.

"Thomas is such an easygoing guy, he's always, 'I'm fine, I'm fine, it's all good.' But I think it's something we have to address rather than ignore," Weight told Newsday's Arthur Staple. "We've got to help him through it. He's not dreadful. He's had some bad luck, some games he's played well where his numbers weren't great. Now you pair it with what you've seen the last couple weeks, we've got to fix it."

Despite the Islanders making a comeback, lack of penalty kills forced their hand in the loss to the Lightning, 6-2, on Tuesday night.

It was a slow first period with the Isles only taking three shots on net. However, the second saw a different team that would muster two goals to tie the game up. Momentum looked to be on the side of the road team, but two penalties would change all of that as the Lightning capitalized on both power-play chances at the end of the second to take a controlling 4-2 lead that they wouldn't surrender the rest of the way.

After awful penalty kills of late, head coach Doug Weight is confused as to what happened to his unit.

NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders hope Thomas Greiss' return between the pipes will allow them to resume their winning ways. The reeling Philadelphia Flyers, on the other hand, have many more issues to worry about than just their goalie.

The two Metropolitan Division teams will renew their rivalry Wednesday night, when the Islanders host the Flyers in a Thanksgiving Eve clash at Barclays Center.

Both teams are coming off losses in their most recent games.

In what was a suspensful game in Tampa Bay, the Islanders managed to come away with another road win against a top team in the league.

The Lightning sat atop the Atlantic Division at 15-2-2 before the Islanders came to town, but New York wasn't focused on that record. They played their game, and stole one from the Lightning at home.

It was a test for head coach Doug Weight's team, and he thinks they came away passing it with flying colors.

The Islanders couldn't capitalize on their third period forecheck, and in turn, dropped the contest to the Oilers, 2-1, in overtime.

It was a lopsided third period as the puck stayed in the Islanders offensive end. However, Oilers G Cam Talbot was stellar, saving 13 shots to cap off a 36-save night. He allowed the one goal from Jordan Eberle in the second period, but was lights out after.

Mathew Barzal knew the Islanders should have cashed in during their late surge.

The summer is over. Fall has arrived and with it, the return of the NHL. Training camps around the league will all be open for business soon, with the first on-ice sessions slated to begin Friday morning.

For the Islanders, it seems every year lately has been 'make or break,' for a variety of reasons. This year, however, the term might never be more accurate as the team looks to re-sign their franchise captain, finally bring some closure to a long, drawn out arena drama and return to the playoffs. The results of those three factors, each under their own cloud of uncertainty, could also decide the future fate of long-tenured general manager Garth Snow, who seems to be running out of time to turn this team into a true contender.

The Islanders' 3-1 loss to the Nashville Predators on Monday night may be a blow too big to overcome in their late push to the playoffs.

The Isles came out flat, being outshot 22-to-15 through two periods, and fell behind into a 2-0 hole. Josh Bailey's second period goal got them closer, but Ryan Johansen scored into an empty net with 21 seconds left to seal the victory for Nashville.

"We've been a little too late to the party on a consistent basis," Doug Weight said of the team's sluggish starts of late. "It didn't bite us against the Rangers, but it did the last couple games."

Since making his Islanders debut in 2010-11, Travis Hamonic's career has been marked by injuries and subpar defensive play, culminating with the 2016-17 season, which has quickly spiraled into one that Hamonic would like to forget.

With 13 points, Hamonic has the lowest point total of his career, not including the 48-game lockout shortened season of 2012-13. He has failed to play a full season since that year, only appearing in 81 percent of all scheduled contests.

He has also been very inconsistent in his own end. Hamonic was a -8 in that lockout year and -5 last year, going +27 over the other four years of his career.

"Every time you get lit up or you don't have the best game, you want to get back out there right away," Greiss said of his bounce back performance, which saw the Isles netminder stop 30 of Carolina's 32 shots.

Greiss, who gave up two goals including one on a breakway by Elias Lindholm, held Carolina at bay after they went up by two, as he made a big sprawling save on Derek Ryan and a highlight reel lounging arm save on Lucas Wallmark both midway through the second.

The Islanders, home in Brooklyn for the first time in three weeks and off the heels of a franchise record nine-game road trip where they went 5-3-1, struggled mightily Monday night in an 8-4 blowout loss to the Hurricanes in what could have been considered a must-win game.

With a record of 3-4-1 over their last eight games, having allowed 25 goals in those losses, it's obviously not the optimum time to go into a slump, clinging to the playoff race by a thread -- one point behind the Maple Leafs, but having played one more game.

"We have to play a lot harder than we did tonight. Execute at a much higher level. Disappointing at this point in the season," captain John Tavares said in the locker room after the game as the team hustled to beat the impending Nor'Easter and catch a flight to Carolina for the rematch Tuesday night.
