Snap your fingers…go ahead, just do it.

Just like that, the Islanders went from a team that won four of five and looked to be righting their wobbly, patchwork ship to set sail toward at least getting back in the playoff conversation, to a team that has now lost four of their last five, including back-to-back loser point 'efforts' in Colorado and Arizona -- the two easiest buildings of 2016-17 to win in.

Latest Update (Dec. 31)

Goaltender Jaroslav Halak has cleared waivers and been assigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL, the team announced.

Previous Reports (Dec. 30)

The Islanders placed Halak on waivers Friday afternoon, the team announced.

Halak's agent took issue with the Islanders' three-goalie situation earlier this season, and it had been reported that GM Garth Snow had been exploring the possibility of moving Halak via trade.

Andy Graziano, SNY.TV:

Thursday night, the Islanders continued their inconsistent season, dropping a 6-4 decision to the Wild in St.Paul. After winning three straight by defeating the Bruins, Sabres, and Capitals, New York got the offense they needed but once again failed in the basic concepts of team defense, paired with shoddy goaltending.

Head coach Jack Capuano, who previously had gone to great lengths to avoid speaking about particular players to the media following wins or losses, and who has repeatedly dodged questions about the crease, saying, "I won't comment on the goaltending", took a different approach last night in his postgame comments.

The New York Islanders have had a tumultuous start to the 2016-17 season, there's no question about that. The old adage 'It's still early' is no longer applicable now that they are 32 games in and are well behind in the standings for a third straight playoff appearance.

Trailing the third place New York Rangers by 17 points for the last guaranteed spot in the Metropolitan division, they are also behind the last wild card spot holder, the Washington Capitals, by 12 points, giving a game in hand and having to jump seven other teams to make the impossible, possible. With the odds makers placing New York's chances around three percent and a road heavy schedule looming in 2017, there could be more Islanders activity than in years past before the NHL's trade deadline, set for March 1 at 3 p.m. ET.

With the first year of a bye week in the NHL instituted, the Islanders will play on New Year's Eve in Winnipeg and not again until Friday, Jan. 6 in Colorado against the equally puzzling and struggling Avalanche.

Tonight, in Brooklyn, they welcome Kyle Okposo back for his first game in a Buffalo Sabres uniform. After a career that spanned nine years and 529 games with the Islanders, he should get a warm welcome like the one received by Matt Martin and Frans Nielsen before him, after being, at times, under appreciated in producing 139 goals and 369 points.

The Islanders have their groove back, or at least that's certainly how it seems after a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues allowed New York to improve their record to 5-0-1 over their last six contests. Head coach Jack Capuano thinks so too, and he told reporters as much after the team's victory on Tuesday night.

"I just think that we're playing with some resiliency and some emotion to our game right now," Capuano said. "Whether they tie it up, or we're down by one, I think that we have that no-quit attitude. We got our identity back a little bit."

The Islanders' 4-2 victory over their crosstown rival New York Rangers was as big of a win as the team has had in the 2016-17 season. Don't get me wrong, it's not nearly enough to get this thing turned around on its own. But by taking down the Metropolitan-leading Rangers, it shows the Islanders and their fans that a run back to playoff contention this season, while improbable, is still a possibility.

Now 4-0-1 in their last five games, the Isles should certainly feel like they have some positive momentum. Wins against perennial divisional contenders the Penguins, Capitals, and Rangers have a way of making both the team and the fan base see the glass half-full. But a quick glimpse at the standings shows how difficult it is to pick up points in this era of the NHL.

The Isles are six points back of a playoff spot (albeit with a game in hand over the Caps, who currently hold the second Wild Card), behind six other teams on the outside-looking-in. In order for them to get back into the postseason conversation, they have a lot more heavy lifting to do, particularly inside the Conference, and they know it.

Remember, remember the month of November. Although that line is modified from the movie 'V for Vendetta', it very much applies to the New York Islanders, who are all too happy to move past their month of horrors and see the calendar flip to December 1.

Going back to the 2011-12 season, the 11th month of the year was not too kind to head coach Jack Capuano and his squad. New York went 4-7-2 and 4-10-1 in back to back full seasons, putting them firmly behind the proverbial eight ball as the season ticked past the thin red line that separates the playoffs from an early golf outing. Things seemed to improve in 2014-15 with a monster 11-3-0 month before the team tailed off yet again the following season with a mark of 7-6-1.

If you're counting at home, that's 26-26-4 over the past four full seasons heading into 2016-17. With New York just completing their November last night at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a game they would will themselves to win 5-3 after surrendering a 3-0 third-period lead, it gave the Islanders a 4-5-4 mark this time around, just 46% of all possible points and only 2 regulation wins in 13 tries.

To say Thomas Hickey has a knack for the dramatic could be the understatement of the 27-year-old Calgary native's New York Islanders career. Once again, New York was up against the odds, down a defenseman due to a late second period injury to Adam Pelech and forced to play the remainder of the game rotating the five still standing.

Having tied the most minutes he has played over the past six games, 19:48, the diminutive yet tough and rugged Hickey found himself as the lone defenseman in the three on three extra session, on the ice with captain John Tavares and Shane Prince.

However, defense was hardly on his mind as he set up shop to the right of Calgary goaltender Brian Elliott and deflected Tavares' floater from the high slot between the netminder's arm and watched it roll into the cage, giving his team a much needed, if slightly unearned, two points.

Entering play on Thursday, the Islanders are 6-9-4, with just 16 points. That puts them dead last in the Eastern Conference and ahead of only Arizona in terms of futility in the NHL. With New York seven points out of a playoff spot and seven teams to leap if they're going to qualify for their third consecutive trip to the postseason, the situation looks bleak.

Still, the Islanders are confident they can get their season turned around. So what has to happen for the Isles to resurrect their 2016-17 campaign?

In professional baseball, there are some pitchers who have been known to have 'personal catchers', players who go behind the plate only when said hurler takes the mound. The New York Islanders and head coach Jack Capuano might want to anoint Thomas Greiss as their 'personal goaltender' after he stole a badly needed two points in Anaheim last night, defeating the Ducks in a 14-round shootout, 3-2.

The problems that have plagued New York all season are still present, from bad defensive zone clearances to a poor breakout and neutral zone play, which instead of creating speed and flow into the offensive zone, more often than not forces a dump-in. But there were flashes, even if they were not sustained over 60 minutes, but rather the first 30, of some of the Islanders hockey that made this team very tough to play against over the past two years.

It doesn't always feel easy for our fans, when you face adversity it's a great challenge and I look forward to seeing who rises to that challenge."

There is a reason dogs are used within our military, trained to help someone who was the victim of an unfortunate accident do daily tasks we take for granted and offer grief counseling to those going through a difficult time in their lives. They always seem to make things better. They possess a 'sixth sense' that draws them even closer to those who really need their positive attitude and selfless dedication to please. It was six months ago that the Tampa Bay Lightning ended the Islanders' longest postseason run since the first term of the (first?) Clinton administration. And now, with a full offseason of roster reshuffling behind both teams, Tuesday night's affair at Barclays Center will be a perfect litmus test for the 4-5 Islanders, who have both dazzled and infuriated their faithful in the first month of the season. Looking back on the Isles' five-game loss last spring, on the surface, it doesn't seem as close as it was. But two overtimes on home ice both went Tampa's way, Victor Hedman was a monster against John Tavares, and it colors the way most look at the seemingly-lopsided defeat. But the reality is that last year's club was far closer to an Eastern Conference Final berth than most care to remember. Now the question is, are this year's version capable of getting over the hump?

The New York Islanders are only seven games into the 2016-17 season. But it has been an eight-game stretch that has seen them capture only 42.8 percent of possible points, as their 3-4-0 start has them trailing their pace of 64.2 percent last season and 71.4 percent in 2014-15.Trying to figure out the reason for the regression could be an exercise in futility at this early juncture, as there are still 75 games left on the docket and 150 points to be won or lost before the dust settles and playoff dreams are realized or crushed. But since when has that stopped anyone before? Fans are antsy and unsettled even though four of the team's last five games have ended in 3-2 final scores with the 3-2-0 record not as bad as it might seem on the surface. Not to mention the losses were to the San Jose Sharks and Montreal Canadiens -- two pretty darn good hockey teams.

The final week of New York Islanders training camp promises to be busy. Players on the bubble hoping to make the 23-man roster, which has to be announced by Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. ET, will have plenty of opportunities to put forth their best case to management and the coaching staff.

New additions Andrew Ladd, P.A Parenteau and Jason Chimera have been assimilated into the squad, while captain John Tavares, goaltender Jaroslav Halak and defenseman Dennis Seidenberg are expected to join their teammates as early as tomorrow.

Jaroslav Halak has turned a lot of heads with his impressive play at the World Cup of Hockey, and at least one former Islander has taken notice.

Team Europe's GM Miroslav Satan, who scored 78 goals for the Isles from 2005-2008, told Shawn Roarke at NHL.com that this may be the best he's ever seen Halak play in his career.

"I think he is getting better with age," Satan said. "This tournament is the best I have ever seen him."

Recently, sources told SNY that Mikhail Grabovski would be seeing Islanders team doctors in an attempt to get cleared for training camp, which began last Thursday morning at the Long Island Marriott with media day.

Last Friday, the Islanders announced that Grabovski had failed his physical. And on Monday, it was announced that Grabovski had been placed on IR due to an upper body injury, retroactive to March 16.

There has been a metric ton of speculation around the Islanders since the summer, mostly around one central question: Are they any better today than they were at the final buzzer of the five-game loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning? Ask them, and they'll tell you they absolutely are.

''[The Lightning series] was frustrating, but you learn from it and you move on,'' Travis Hamonic told reporters at media day on Thursday. ''[To win a playoff series] was good for our team, for our fan base to see that and have an opportunity to win the first one in a long time. It sets our bar and our expectations even higher.''

Three Islanders players are moving on to the semi-finals at the World Cup of Hockey.

John Tavares set up a highlight reel goal in Team Canada's 4-2 victory that helped eliminate the US. With their second win of tournament play, Canada has clinched a spot in the final four.

Also on their way to the semi-finals is Team Europe, led by goaltender Jaro Halak. Halak has posted two wins (one shutout) and has surrendered just two goals in Team Europe's first two contests. Thomas Greiss has yet to dress.

Jaro Halak beat out Thomas Greiss for the starting goaltending job. No, not with the Islanders -- at least not yet. Halak was tabbed Team Europe's head netminder for the World Cup of Hockey, which kicks off in earnest on Saturday when the tournament round opens.

"It would be silly to play any type of games around anything," Team Europe head coach Ralph Krueger told Brian Compton. "The way Jaro has come into this camp, into his games, the professionalism … we're of course pleased to see him have that kind of a game [on Wednesday]."

The New York Islanders went through some dramatic roster changes this summer and only time will tell what effect they have on the results of the 2016-17 season when activities in preparation for puck drop begin this week at Northwell Health Ice Center.

First up is rookie camp, with the youngster's first day on the ice coming Friday, September 16 in East Meadow. There has not been an official camp roster announced at this time, with Mathew Barzal, Michael Dal Colle, Joshua Ho-Sang, Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock the only five names so far made public.

Goaltender Thomas Greiss has been added to Team Europe's roster for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, the team announced Friday

Greiss, among the final seven players added to Europe's roster, is the fifth Islander to be selected for the tournament, joining John Tavares (Canada), Frans Nielsen (Europe), Jaroslav Halak (Europe) and Nikolay Kulemin (Russia).

Greiss finished the 2015-16 season with a 23-11-4 record, compiling a .925 save percentage - third best in the NHL. After the postseason ended, Greiss backstopped Team Germany in the World Championships.

The first round of the tournament is set to begin Sept. 17.

On March 8 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Islanders were about to hold onto a 2-1 divisional victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on a third period goal by Anders Lee. You remember, the one where he famously flipped Kris Letang in front of the net before deflecting Nick Leddy's shot past Marc-Andre Fleury.

With a little less than five minutes remaining, goaltender Jaroslav Halak made a sliding save, injuring his groin in the process before being helped to the dressing room. Thomas Greiss entered the game in relief and made three saves to nail down the victory before going back to his backup status. But wait….he didn't. And he might not again.
