RB Tiki Barber retired before QB Eli Manning realized his potential as a championship QB. Throughout his playing years and beyond, Tiki has had his criticism of Eli, even though Manning has not one, but two, Super Bowl MVPs under his belt.

Appearing on WFAN this morning with Sid Rosenberg and Kim Jones, Barber had this to say about the recent valley in Eli's career:

?He?s done great things, but he doesn?t do it consistently..What makes someone great in the history, in the annals of an organization or a league? It?s consistency ? The problem with Eli, as of late, I think, is there?s something physically off. There?s definitely a confidence issue."

David Wilson's fumbling problem has been all the rage here in NY this week. With the Giants thin at RB, they have no choice but to hope that he can shed this habit and quickly.

A few years back, another Giant RB had slippery hands as well. He overcame his issues after Tom Coughlin and crew helped him adjust his style.

Tiki Barber became a regular part of the Giants' offense in 2000 and averaged nearly nine fumbles from 2000-2003. When Coughlin arrived in 2004, Barber's fumbles went down and his production went up - way up.

Today in Great Moments in Giants' History, we go back to Tiki Barber's final regular season game in a Giant uniform: December 30th, 2006.

The Giants (7-8) travelled down to the DC to face the Redskins (5-10) with their playoff hopes barely alive and calls for Tom Coughlin's head reverberating through Giants Stadium and in media. New York had lost six of their last seven after starting the season at 6-2. The Giants won, 34-28 and advanced to the NFC WildCard Playoffs.

From the AP: "We won a game, and we got into the playoffs," said Coughlin, who grew a little testy when reporters asked whether he was coaching for his job. "Is that good enough?"

Here's some key stats and records set from the Giants' 41-27 win against the Browns yesterday.

  • The Giants moved into a first-place tie with the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost to the Steelers. Both teams own a 3-2 record.
  • The Giants are now 8-0 in their eight contests against AFC foes. They last lost to an AFC squad in September 2010 v. Tennessee.
  • The Giants' 27 first-half points was the most since they scored 35 against Seattle in November 2010.
  • This was the 10th time the Giants scored at least 41 points in the Tom Coughlin era.
  • The Giants' 243 rushing yards was the highest total since running for 301 against Carolina in December 2008.
  • Ahmad Bradshaw's 200 yards and 30 carries were both career highs. His old mark was 151 yards v. Buffalo in 2007.
  • Bradshaw was credited with the ninth 200-yard rushing game in Giants history. It was the first since Derrick Ward ran for 215 v. Carolina, and Bradshaw's 30 carries was the most since Tiki Barber has 32 v.?Philadelphia?in 2005.
  • The G-Men are 38-10 when a running back reaches the century mark. The Giants are 9-0 when Bradshaw does.
  • The win marked the 77th regular-season victory for Tom Coughlin, which tied him with Bill Parcells for second place all-time behind Steve Owen (153 wins).
  • Eli Manning threw 259 yards, his 24th consecutive 200-yard game. He now owns the second-longest streak in NFL history, trailing Dan Fouts, who had 45.

Tiki Barber retired after the 2006 season, leaving Giant fans wanting more and possibly foregoing a chance at the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame. His twin brother Ronde, however, decided to go a different route. He is now in his 16th season as a defensive back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Last week, Ronde was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week:

  • Barber made his NFL-record 200th consecutive start at cornerback in the Buccaneers? 16-10 win over Carolina. He had an interception, a sack, five tackles and two passes defensed in the victory.
  • The performance was the third time in his career, including playoffs, that he recorded a sack and an interception in the same game. He is the only player in NFL history with at least 40 interceptions (44) and 25 sacks (28).
  • Barber led a defense that held the Panthers to 10 total rushing yards, tied for the fewest rushing yards allowed in franchise history (12/4/94). Carolina?s offense led the NFC last year averaging 150.5 rushing yards per game.
  • In his 16th year from Virginia, this is Barber?s 10th career Player of the Week Award, including the postseason. He has won nine times on defense and once on special teams. This is his first award since he was named NFC Defensive Player of Week 3 in 2011.
  • Barber?s nine Defensive Player of the Week Awards are tied for the most in NFL history with Pro Football Hall of Famers Chris Doleman, Bruce Smith and Lawrence Taylor and Ray Lewis.

Why would a 43 year-old gridiron legend such as Junior Seau, who was a 12-time Pro Bowler and is headed to the Hall of Fame, take his own life in such a sudden and violent fashion?

Many believe Seau, like several others before him, suffered from a type of post-career depression where they could not overcome life outside of the game.

Former Giant great Tiki Barber, who chose to shorten his own football career, was a guest on CNN's Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien this morning to discuss the challenges NFL players face after leaving the game....

In addition, former Giants offensive lineman Shaun O'Hara will continue his analyst role on SNY's Giants coverage -- including the network's Big Blue Live post game show -- which will air immediately after Sunday's NFC Championship game.

Big Blue Live will showcase all of the post-game press conferences, exclusive on-field interviews and reactions from both the Giants' and 49ers' players and coaches.

I don?t see any reason to stray from a formula that has been working. Especially when it is extremely appropriate for this particular scenario. So while I don?t intend to be too agitated today, I will be utilizing yet another comparison to the 2007 championship season.

In 2006, Tiki Barber served as the face of an underwhelming Giants franchise. In the fall of 2005 (a season in which he would break off a 95 yard run and accrue 235 rushing yards in a single game), he would accompany Jeremy Shockey to the bedside of a dying Wellington Mara. The two were described as the football patriarch?s favorite current stars.

But after years of serving as the lightening rod for an otherwise underachieving offense, Barber abruptly left pro football. His departure left a significant hole in the Giants roster. The hole was not much unlike the one that Jerry Reese found himself staring at when Steve Smith hobbled out the door and into the Eagles arms.

Former Giant RB Tiki Barber's?latest gig?is writing for a website called The XLOG. His latest entry is fair, but critical, of his former coach and team.

I?m going to go way back to when coach Coughlin first took over for a fired Jim Fassel. "In his introductory press conference he stated that ?injuries are a cancer,? later clarifying that he was talking about players milking injuries and not being tough enough. His argument had merit, but going on to say at the time, ?It is something that has to be corrected. It is a mental thing I believe as much as anything else,? seems especially ironic given the numerous guys on IR this season, and the many more that haven?t reliably been on the field? Not to mention that the Giants? play of late hasn?t exactly rang of mental toughness. So who takes that blame?"

Tiki isn't wrong about this. The injuries haven't stopped under Tom Coughlin. ?In fact they might be worse than they've ever been.

Former Giants head coach Bill Parcells and Tiki Barber, the club's all-time leading rusher are on the eligible list for this year's Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot.

For Parcells, this is the second time he has been made eligible. He was eligible after retiring from the Jets int he early 2000's but then lost that status when he took the head coaching job with the Dallas Cowboys.

They are joined on the list for the first time by?Drew Bledsoe, Stephen Davis, Rod Smith, Will Shields, Troy Vincent and Mike Vanderjagt. Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is also on the list as is Marty Schottenheimer.

Michael Strahan appeared on the Mike and Mike show this week and told the ESPN morning hosts that Tiki Barber belongs in the NFL, but his history of outspokenness may be turning teams off....

?It wasn?t even about football. I don?t feel like football was the reason that no one brought him in, because that?s the easy part for him. I think it was the reputation things that probably scared more teams away," said Strahan. "Did everything in our locker room work out great with him? Not all the time, but everything didn?t work out great with everybody. Did he get along with everybody? He probably didn?t get along ? got along with less guys . . . because he wasn?t reaching out to a lot of the younger players."

The gut feeling is that a team will come forward once the season begins and veteran contracts are not guaranteed...

According to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News, Barber has had one workout with the Miami Dolphins. He was not offered a contract. At this point, it would be surprising if Barber is on a 53-man roster to open the season. The minimum salary for Barber is $910,000 and that figured would be fully guaranteed if he was with a team in Week 1. Obviously, there are cheaper and much younger options available.

With the Albany conundrum put to rest, the whole Giants organization can take a deep breath. The move just wasn't doable this year.

Logistically, it made no sense. There is too much housekeeping to do down here. Uprooting an entire organization 150 miles north at the drop of a hat was just too tall a task. Especially if your organization is, well, disorganized.

Newsday's Neil Best posted an in-depth interview with Tiki Barber, his agent Mark Lepselter, and trainer Joe Carini on his Watchdog?blog. Here's what Barber said about the Giants:

?I talked to [GM] Jerry Reese right before the lockout. He said, ?Tiki, don?t think there won?t be interest here.? But it?s not a real feasibility. We both know that . . . As I tell people, ?There?s a professional relationship there [with coach Tom Coughlin] that might not work out so well.'

?It wasn?t as if I was asking the Giants to activate me and put me back on their roster. Our letter to them asked them to activate me and release me. Jerry was nothing but complimentary. He was supportive. He said, ?Tiki, I?ve known you for a long time. Anything you put your mind to you can do and I wouldn?t bet a quarter against you.? I have a good relationship with the Giants and it in no way was going to be adversarial or controversial as it was made out to be.??

Eli Manning may not be worthy of a Top 100 ranking in the recent and ridiculous NFL Network player poll, but when he talks, people tend to listen.

Yesterday?s radio appearance fiasco?the latest in the drawn out decline of Tiki Barber serves as yet another reminder of the off the field controversies that surround professional sports stars.

Once one of New York?s favorite sons, Barber was thought to be a walking embodiment of everything that Wellington Mara and the Giants organization stood for. He exuded class, got involved with charity work, and usually handled himself with poise when addressing the media. For a team that was desperate for something to smile about, Barber was a bright spot that the crowd relied upon to add spark to a mediocre offensive attack.

So why exactly is Barber?s worsening image important? He is certainly not the first pro athlete, not even the first Giant in recent memory, to tarnish himself in the public?s eye. This case stands out because it proves that owners and GM?s never can quite tell which potential team members will generate distractions and negative attention within the locker room.

Both players are hellbent on redemption and plan to make their football comebacks count. Barber is coming back after four years of self-imposed exile in which he completely blew up his media career and saw his personal life implode in that same forum. In his absence, the Giants won a Super Bowl and have moved on without him.

I guess Tom Coughlin should have spent as much time and effort fixing Tiki Barber's propensity to spew ignorant nonsense as he did helping him hold onto the football.

As you've probably read by now, Tiki Barber compared himself to Anne Frank. Tiki's analogy likened his hiding from the media in his agent's attic to Anne Frank and her family hiding from the Nazis. ?So much for hiding; the media attention is back on Tiki once again.

Tiki has had several mishaps involving the media, which he was a part of as a?correspondent?for NBC. ?He famously criticized Tom Coughlin and later questioned Eli Manning's qualities as a leader.?These comments ruffled the feathers of many Giants fans.

The draft is over, Eli and company have finished up in Hoboken, and the players are locked out. That means there's not much to report on the second Sunday in May (with the exception of the developing story out of Albany posted below this one). But this is football, these are the New York Giants, and no matter what Rex Ryan says, the Giants always matter around here. Here's a look at a?few stories:

Gary Myers?defends the Giants and?thinks?that Rex Ryan's insecurities are being revealed when he talks about the Jets being the big brother: "I've said many times Ryan is quite entertaining and his trash-talking and speaking from the heart is refreshing compared to so many NFL head coaches. But he's on the verge of a credibility issue here. At some point, the Jets have to win the Super Bowl or nobody is ever going to take him seriously. And he doesn't further his own cause by belittling the Giants, an institution in this town." NY Daily News

Bob Raissman says that the NFL Network?disrespected Bob Papa by making him audition for his job, then replacing him with Brad Nessler: "This was despicable and gutless, too. If NFLN honchos wanted to fire Papa, which they obviously did, why not just immediately tell him his services were no longer needed? Instead, they dragged him through the mud, humiliated him." MORE TIKI COVERAGE: HOW WILL THE FANS REACT?

It is safe to say that Tiki Barber is not the most popular New York Giant. In fact, many fans and probably some within the organization would prefer that Barber not be identified with the Giants in any way. Truth be told, Barber will forever be linked to Big Blue. He spent 10 years as a member of the Giants - the only team he would play for in his career - and finished with 15,632 yards from scrimmage and 68 total touchdowns. He is the Giants' all-time leading rusher with 10,449 yards.

Barber retired following the 2006 season, one year before the Giants improbable Super Bowl win over New England. With his TV career not living up to expectations, Barber is making an attempt at returning to the NFL this season. In an interview with ESPN, Barber talked about how close he was to returning during the 2007 season. The plan was for him to join his brother, Ronde, in Tampa Bay. Though he reportedly agreed on a deal?to join the Bucs,?ultimately, Barber decided to stay retired, and he claims now that his decision was based on a desire to remain a Giant, even in retirement.

From a football standpoint... "age" goes against Tiki.? Even the most well conditioned athlete's slow down as they get older; however, they are still athletic and competitive...but a changing athlete.? Metabolism and flexibility just changes.? In this week's Sports Illustrated, former Giants' running back Tiki Barber commented on playing in the NFL?against a sibling. The story focused on Eli and Peyton Manning, but Barber knows a thing or two about playing a sibling. Tiki and his brother, Ronde, have combined to play for 24 seasons of pro football. The Giants and Buccaneers met five times while Tiki and Ronde were on the rosters. Barber can relate to what the Mannings went through for the second time in their careers Sunday night.

"Eli and Peyton are both intense, more so than Ronde and I," Tiki says. "They don't let their family situation distract them from what they have to do. It's literally all X's and O's for them. The intensity has to do with the fact that they're brothers but more to do with the fact they are insanely focused on winning. If that means kicking your brother's butt, they will do it.

"It's a mixture of emotions," Tiki says of facing a sibling. "Your instincts say, I should be rooting for him."
