Tim Erixon

In an interview with HockeySvergise, Tim Erixon said that he was sad to leave the Rangers because he enjoyed his time in the organization and it was the team that his father played for.

He added that he wanted to play with the Rangers more last season but it was understandable to him because the team was in first place and there wasn't much to change.

Erixon added that he is happy in Columbus and has no problem spending the season in the AHL do to the lockout.

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that one of the reasons the Rangers felt like they could trade Tim Erixon was because they didn't see him as a player who could succeed playing the way John Tortorella wants his defensemen to play.

Brooks notes that losing Erixon did seep the Rangers of their biggest piece of depth on defense.

The addition of Tim Erixon into the Rangers proposal to Columbus is reportedly what got the deal expedited and sent Rick Nash to the Rangers.

Aaron Portzline tweeted on Monday that the Rangers fear of the Flyers getting Shea Weber forced their hand a bit in increasing their pursuit of Rick Nash.

Portzline wrote in the Columbus Dispatch that Tim Erixon was only added to the deal late last week as a "sweetener" to push the deal through, but only if the Blue Jackets would add a piece to send back to the Rangers. That piece appeared to be the conditional third round pick that returns to Columbus if the Rangers make the Stanley Cup Final.

Scott Howson said on Monday that the Rangers and Blue Jackets spoke last week, agreed to take the weekend to think it over, and finalized it yesterday.

Tim Erixon played 18 games for the Rangers last season in three different stints.

In his first stint in October (9 games), Erixon averaged 14:58, in his second stint (4 games in December) Erixon averaged 10:16 and in his final five games, March, Erixon played 11:37 and had two assists.

Jeff Gorton said at Blueshirts United of Erixon, "The first time he was up, it was a strength issue, he is a young man with an underdeveloped body and he is working on that. He got a stronger and worked hard with the coaching staff and when he was recalled there was a noticeable difference. Come next year I think Timmy will have a big push to make the team."

The Rangers have announced that Tim Erixon has been sent to the Connecticut Whale.

Erixon has been scratched the last two games. He was called up on March 17th and played five games for the Rangers.

During this recent call up, John Tortorella said of Erixon ?He?s been steady. We?re putting him in situations that we want to try and help him with his confidence and we want to help him succeed. In each of the games he?s played, he?s made two or three subtle plays passing the puck.?

Since being called up by the Rangers, Erixon has played 9:57, 12:29 and 10:44 in the three games before last night.

John Tortorella told Ranger Rants that he is happy with what he has seen from Erixon, "?He?s been steady. In his first game with the Rangers since late December, Tim Erixon played just under ten minutes, was a minus one and had three hits and one blocked shots.

Before the game, Katie Strang tweeted that John Tortorella said, "We'll take a look at him." "I want to see how he'll play."

Following the game, Tortorella said of Erixon:

"He looks a little stronger out of his uniform. He makes a really good patient play to Step and that is what we are hoping for with him. Someone to get us out of our end zone and can add something to a second power play. There is some work to be done for him to continue to understand our concept, but we are going to give him a look. I think the tutelage down there and the grind of the AHL has helped him. Hopefully he can step in and give us some minutes."
After the morning skate yesterday, Erixon told Pat Leonard of the Daily News, ?I?ve been working on the same things, learning the system, the gaps and being more aggressive. I feel more comfortable with all of that. I feel like I?ve improved a lot and am getting stronger.?

At ESPN Insider, Corey Pronman lists five Ranger prospects that the Rangers could trade for Rick Nash.

He lists Tim Erixon, Chris Kreider, Michael St. Croix, JT Miller and Dylan McIlrath.

  • On Erixon, who Pronman is a big fan of, he says that Erixon projects to be a shutdown defenseman who can play against the other team's top players.
  • On Kreider, Pronman writes that he is looked at as a top six goal scorer with first line potential.
  • On St. Croix, he quotes a scout as saying, "He's the player this year I thought he was going to be last year." St. Croix is a brilliant playmaking forward with great upside and could have the potential to be a top-two line scorer in the NHL.
  • On JT Miller, Pronman says that he is a versatile player with no noticeable weaknesses.
  • On McIlrath, he says that after struggling to start the season, McIlrath has "been a bone-crushing defenseman who scares the life out of opposing forwards every shift."
It is believed that the Rangers would prefer to send prospects to Columbus over roster players in order to acquire Nash.

At ESPN Insider, Corey Pronman writes that Rangers defenseman Tim Erixon is one of the best prospects playing in the AHL.

He says that Erixon's point per game pace in the AHL doesn't even do him justice:

Erixon is logging huge minutes and playing at a very high-end level at both ends of the rink. His puck-moving skills and overall hockey sense are true plus abilities and he looks like the kind of player who will be able to play versus the opponents' better players and still keep the play flowing in his team's favor.
He also considers Erixon to be one of the best defense prospects playing outside the NHL right now.

Overall, Erixon has played solid hockey both offensively and defensively, and he is making a name for himself with the Whale. It shouldn?t shock anyone if Erixon earns another recall later this season, and then makes the 2012-13 roster out of camp next September.

Tim Erixon played less than ten minutes against the Devils on Tuesday night and it is possible that he plays tonight against the Islanders as well as Jeff Woywitka recovers from a foot injury.

John Tortorella said yesterday, to Newsday's Zach Schronbrun, that there is a decision to be made about where Erixon should be playings:

"As we go through here, I'm not sure if this is the best thing for him or playing in the minors. I just don't want to hurt him in his progression."
I don't think that moving Erixon up and down will really mess him up since I think he is farther along than most rookie prospects are. The issue is keeping Erixon with the Rangers for a month and him only playing 10 minutes a game, with no PP or PK, when he could play double and in all situations in Connecticut.

On Erixon, J.J Daigneault says "He?s not extremely physical, but he gets things done with smarts. He closes the gap, angles players, has a good stick and is quick to recover loose pucks.

29. Hard not to be impressed with Tim Erixon in Calgary. Played 18:12, his most this season. Booed every time he touched the puck. Didn't get rattled. If I was a Calgary fan, I'd boo him too, because I'd wish he stayed.

Elliotte Friedman

He is so calm back there on defense and I think he has gotten better with each game. He is playing around 16 minutes a night and not really killing penalties. So much of what happens with him this season depends on what happens with Marc Staal, but I wonder if by the time Staal gets back, Erixon is in a place where the Rangers can't send him down and much like Ryan McDonagh last season, he is a big part of the team.

Erixon's agent told the Daily News yesterday that Tim didn't sign with Calgary because of "concerns regarding Calgary?s roster flexibility, cap space situation, and how it would impact Tim?s opportunity to play at the NHL level.?

?I think a big part of his development is playing. If for some reason we feel he?s the odd man out here, he?ll go down to the minors.?
John Tortorella said that he wants Erixon to follow the same path that Ryan McDonagh did last season.

I was very excited and nervous. After two or three shifts I kind of calmed down out there. It was fun. I enjoyed every shift I played."

Erixon played nearly 13 minutes, had a hit, took a penalty and blocked a shot.

He was sort of smiling as the camera showed him in the penalty box and I think that he was just overcome with not only being in a Rangers jersey in an NHL game, but one that is being played in his home country. I? thought he was pretty good out there, but it will be best for him to go to Hartford and play top minutes down there and hopefully work his way up during the season.

NHL.com

He is calm, patient and just rock solid. He reminds me a lot of Ryan McDonagh, not just in how he plays, but in how he seems to be off the ice. He is quiet, collected, and ready to work. McDonagh didn't make the team to start last season, but I am not sure that Erixon will find the same fate. I think that Erixon will be a Ranger when the Rangers open up in Sweden on October 7th.

At Coming Down The Pipe, they look at some possible rookies for the Rangers this season.

Tim Erixon, Pavel Valentenko, Tomas Kundratek and Ryan Bourque are some of the players mentioned as possible candidates for roster spots.

Valentenko really did come close to making the team last season. He and Ryan McDonagh were the last cuts on defense and it will be interesting to see how he fares during camp. Kundratek is someone that most people forget about but he has a nice talent level. I think he could spend, at least, another year in the minors.

Blueshirts United?has Tim Erixon's 2009 Draft profile.

Have to say, I am excited about this pick up. As?Adam discussed, we give up 2 picks and a?good prospect in?Horak, but Erixon looks to be a potential top 4 defenseman. The organization has quite a few defensive minded defenseman (Girardi, McD, Sauer) so it will help to have a more offensive minded player who can potentially help on the powerplay. I remember him for the WJC's as he had a big game vs Canada and a solid tournament overall. Many NHL scouts had him as a top 10 pick in this years draft had he not signed with anyone. It is too early to see where this leaves MDZ or Gilroy, but in my opinion, this is a good problem to have.
