It appears the Giants' pursuit of Tim Hightower is ongoing. And now another team has entered the race.

Both the Redskins and the Giants have inquired about signing Hightower this off-season, according to the Washington Post.

The last team to employ the running back was Washington -- back during the 2012 pre-season -- while New York has been the primary team linked to him this off-season.

Former Cardinals and Redskins running back Tim Hightower is visiting with the Giants today, according to reports.

The free agent would only add depth to the Giants at the running back position, as the team can rest surely on the legs of sophomore David Wilson and his capable backup, Andre Brown.

Rounding out the depth chart is former Terp Da'Rel Scott and Ryan Torain. The Giants also added Michael Cox out of Massachusetts in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, then signed Jeremy Wright out of Louisville in the subsequent days.

Aiming to add depth to their defensive line, defensive tackle Mike Patterson is paying a visit to the New York Giants.

Patterson, the longtime Philadelphia Eagle, was released in late February. The 29-year-old former first-round draft pick visited with the Detroit Lions shortly after, but no deal was reached.

Patterson's visit included a physical, according to reports, as Patterson's seizure during training camp in 2011 nearly ended his career. In January 2012, he underwent surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation from his brain.

Three Redskins players who will have an impact on Sunday's season opener:

1. Tim Hightower

Mike Shannahan loves to establish the run, and Hightower has been the Redskins' most effective player this pre-season. He is by no means an elite player, but he has shown flashes of starter-caliber talent in the past, and on the current Redskins roster, that is enough to set oneself apart. Especially with Jonathan Goff out and rookie Greg Jones starting at middle linebacker, stopping Hightower will be key for the defense.
