Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, points out that the option the Mets have on JJ Putz is for $9.1 million, and not for $8.6 million as had been previously reported due to a performance clause that was exercised prior to his trade to the Mets.

Rubin feels that there is no way the Mets can bring Putz back at either salary.

...i am leaning towards agreeing with Rubin at this point...at first i was on the fence because he can be a valuable but costly part of the bullpen, but i now think the money is better spent elsewhere, and as Rubin says, he probably wants to close...

Adam Rubin of the Daily News believes Tim Redding can stop worrying, as it appears he is ?off the chopping block.?

Last week, Rubin?said the Mets had decided to release Redding by the end of?the recently-concluded?road trip.

? redding can probably thank the injury to Fernando Nieve, as well as John Maine?s decision to visit Dr. Andrews for a second opinion on his shoulder?

According to the Daily News, the Mets had decided to release Tim Redding by the end of this road trip.

…however, given last night’s injury to Fernando Nieve, it would seem, instead, the Mets will likely keep redding around, since nieve will most certainly soon end up on the disabled list

…it seems most everyone believes Jon Niese will replace nieve in the rotation, while redding will bump to the bullpen

Tim Redding is 0–2 with a 9.20 ERA in three starts, during which the Mets are 0–3.

Meanwhile, the Mets are 6–3 in Livan Hernandez’s nine starts this season, though five of the six wins were against the Braves, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins and Brewers.

Eventually, the Mets will promote Oliver Perez, who will re-join John Maine, Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana, meaning one of Redding or Hernandez will get bumped from the rotation.

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Tim Redding pitched in an extended spring training game Monday, and is scheduled to pitch again this weekend.

Redding is on the disabled list with a rotator cuff strain.

ok, so, when he’s eligible to return, say, in two weeks or so, then what, who gets cut i wonderright now, i would not make any suggestions, since so much will happen between now and then, but it feels like the Mets have already made a lot of small transactions, all of which will add up to limit their options moving forward

Tim Redding will not throw from a mound tomorrow, as originally expected, instead, ‘he’ll play catch again at 150 feet to build arm strength,’ writes David Lennon on his blog for Newsday.

…i get the feeling redding is going slow, at his own pace, on purpose… i mean, he is guaranteed a roster spot, regardless of whether he’s a fifth starter or a long man… given concerns surrounding Freddy Garcia and Livan Hernandez, and the young Jon Niese, it may make more sense for redding to just go slow, and shine late

Lennon also reports on why Oliver Perez is batting second, and why Johan Santana is not starting tomorrow, as had been originally planned.

At his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman writes that it is too early to crown Freddy Garcia as the fifth starter.

Sherman notes:

"The early read in camp is that Garcia is still tight and not fully unleashing his surgically repaired right arm yet. Maybe he is just conserving bullets or going slowly in a long camp or still has some doubt in the back of his head."

However, when he started throw it caused soreness in his shoulder, forcing him to shut down his throwing program and he only recently started long-tossing again.

Jerry Manuel told reporters that Redding had originally been the runner for the team’s fifth starter, but this brings everyone else back into the race.

Yesterday, as seen in this photo, Mike Pelfrey wore a black, chin-strap, military, motorcycle helmet while working out in camp.

According to Bart Hubbuch in the New York Post, “Pelfrey dubbed it his ‘crash helmet,’ a joke stemming from the day before, when he somehow managed to flip over his cart during an afternoon round of golf with fellow starter John Maine, C Brian Schneider and OF Ryan Church.’

For details, including quotes from Pelfrey, read Hubbuch’s report, and keep an eye on his blog, here, for updates from camp throughout the day.

Mets RHP Tim Redding, during a recent interview on MLB Network's Hot Stove Show, said:

“Tom O'Connel, my agent, when he got the phone call that I was non-tendered from Washington, he said he had a couple different teams in mind – and within six days the Mets called.  I told him there is no place I'd rather be then in New York.  He said, ‘Well, I've got some other teams on the side.  I've got Colorado, I've got Pittsburgh, Baltimore, let me get as many offers from out there as I can.’  I said, ‘Fine, I want to have some options, obviously, but New York is where I want to be…

“I'm from the state of New York.  I'm from Rochester.  I grew up a new York sports fan, I watched the Yankees, I watched the Mets, I watched the Jets, Giants, Bills, everybody.  There's no bigger market, and anybody who is anybody who plays a professional sport wants to play somewhere in relation to where they grew up and what they grew up knowing and I know New York sports.  I was a New York fan, I know what to expect from them, and I know what they expect from me.”
