Nets PG D'Angelo Russell led the team's comeback in their 98-92 win Monday that broke a four-game losing streak.

The Nets had gotten out to an early lead, but eventually blew it when the Suns went up 75-74 in the fourth. However, Russell went on a tear that helped solidified not only a much-needed win to break their losing skid, but the Nets' first road win of the season.

"It wasn't the prettiest game ever played in the NBA. It was a lot of tugging and clawing, a lot of fouls, but we found a way," head coach Kenny Atkinson told The Post's Brian Lewis. "It was a good sign of growth for our team."

The Nets roster is ready to go from worst in the league to playoff contender this season, but GM Sean Marks and head coach Kenny Atkinson are only focused on progress and development.

The Nets' 20-62 record last season was the worst in the NBA. But spirits are high this season after the acquisitions of PG D'Angelo Russell, C Timofey Mozgov, SF DeMarre Carroll, and SG Allen Crabbe to go along with the Nets' first-round C Jarrett Allen.

Atkinson loves his new band of players to work with, but he isn't primarily focused on winning a ring just yet. He needs his players to grow first.

With Turiaf likely to be sidelined for a while, this will have a serious impact over the next few games. Tough times ahead before the All-Star break.

D'Antoni acting like Larry Brown with the shifts in starting lineup. Not a fan of that.

"I don?t think you do," (Mike) D?Antoni said. "He?ll play some. We?ll just see how the rotation goes. I don?t know yet. But somehow he?s got to be able to play."
Good sign for those who like the more tradition lineup. Dallas is a good team to get Moz major minutes because they feature Brian Cardinal and Ty Chandler in a more traditional 4/5 lineup.

Will this mean the Knicks go deeper down the bench? Or more minutes for Turiaf and Bill Walker? My guess is a little of both, with Mozgov getting the nod over Randolph. Just a feeling.

When Wilson Chandler is really on his game at the 4, much like Marion was with the Suns, the Knicks can spread the floor, score, and reasonably manage to rebound. That recipe results in wins...and good wins. The Knicks manhandled a Spurs team with Tim Duncan and DeJuan Blair, yet clearly have had their issues against the game's elite in Boston, Miami, Orlando and now the Lakers.

Tonight is no picnic either.

It's bothersome to me, as I'm sure it is with you, that when the Knicks are getting worked on the boards you look down the bench and you see Ronny Turiaf begging to get in. Not playing him in LA for more than a handful of minutes is inexcusable.

Expect a ton of Gortat (or not considering he was traded...) against the Knicks tonight as well as Howard, so without question the Knicks will need help up front so I'd expect some time from Mozgov.

The guy has skill, he just seemed overwhelmed at times. His hands are bad, and he doesn't rebound well, but as we said from the beginning of the season, 10 minutes per game is far from unreasonable. I understand not playing him in certain games, but he needs to be put in a position to help the team. That should help his confidence grow. Tonight would be a good place to start.

In many ways actually, but from the sounds of it, it seems like the coach has worked on his communication skills from a season ago. Via Posting and Toasting.
First of all, I?ll repeat myself: coach has talked several times about the different rotation schemes. Second, we have talked with him about it, even though briefly. He promised to get me back on the court, and I have no reason not to trust him. Third, I think right now he?s just found the game he was looking for and that got us rolling.
The Knicks will need Moz to get back into playing games soon. Hopefully he can give them close to the energy and production he gave at times during the preseason.

Timofey Mozgov is struggling.

Believe it or not, there's a good chance Landry Fields may go through a period of poor play too. Danilo Gallinari hasn't had a very consistent season to say the least. Plus Ronny Turiaf has been hurt and Toney Douglas hasn't been all that great either. All great signs. This team CAN, and needs to, be better.

"We can definitely get to another level," Felton said after producing 17 points and 13 assists. "We can get even better."
So why must we continue to hear about Eddy Curry?

The obvious answer is that the team is only 2 games over .500, one bad loss from all the questions starting again. But last night's win, and the team's overall performance on the road, really has me thinking that the team has turned a corner and is playing, not just to make the playoffs, but to beat who ever is in their paths.

Timofey Mozgov is expected to start Wednesday against the Boston Celtics at MSG, a move that could be permanent depending on how the rookie center performs for the remainder of the preseason.

Hopefully, Doc Rivers will start Shaquille O'Neal that night because it will give everyone - Mozgov, Mike D'Antoni, Knick fans - a chance to see Mozgov compete against a solid, albeit aging, NBA center.

I am surprised it's happened this quickly, despite being impressed by what Mozgov has been able to bring to the table thus far. He fits a tremendous need and has to stay on the floor. Can he manage 25-30 minutes? Only time will tell...

Mike D'Antoni officially has another man crush -- Timofey Mozgov...D'Antoni has tried to stop himself from gushing over Mozgov like he used to gush over Danilo Gallinari and David Lee. But D'Antoni has already called Mozgov training camp's brightest light. In the preseason opener, the sturdy center scored a smooth 10 points with five rebounds in 19 minutes....But D'Antoni is still leery of giving him the starting job

D'Antoni never mentioned Eddy Curry, expected to be waived after February's trading deadline when his expiring contract no longer is a trading pawn.

I would think that's assuming they don't include his contract in a deal before the deadline. And to be honest, Mozgov has been a bright spot all camp. The biggest positive for me has been his ability to finish at the rim and protect it. If he can curb his foul problem, he'll be a definite rotation player.

Check out Fromthebaseline...

To me, after watching the tape, rebounding is still a major weakness. The small lineups that D'Antoni tried to utilize seemed ineffective. It seems like either Turiaf or Mozgov have to be on the floor at all times...I've been asked several times if I'm concerned about the number of points allowed. The answer is no because I was happy with giving up 52 first half points in the first preseason game. I always think a big key to any game is giving up less than 30 points in the first quarter...I've been asked a ton about who I'd rather give up in a trade for Melo: Randolph or Gallo. The answer is whichever one Denver prefers seeing that they are the ones that have to agree to a deal, not me. But I don't give up both. I go back and forth on the answer of who I prefer to keep. Gallo and Melo share a position so I wonder who can play the 2 because Gallo is not ready to play the 4 full time. I don't believe a front court of Amar'e, Gallo and Melo would be good enough defensively. However, I'm reminded what a Division 1 assistant coach told me once about talented players who can't please a coach and who can't stick with a program.

"They are like a really hot single girl...You really have to wonder why they are available."

Here it is everyone. Your first open thread for the first preseason game of the season. I would venture to guess that Turiaf gets the start along side Stoudemire and the starters will play significant minutes.

There are potential issues, but the bottom line for me is can the team create second opportunities and can they limit the other team to a lot of one and done situations, and I don't mean makes.

What also remains to be seen is how much longer we'll be able to enjoy the humorous Twitter posts being put up by a Mozgov imposter. (Sample: Bear meet and toast = brekfast of champiuns,. Ready for war at praktis b4 we head 2 Italy. Ya gotova!!!!) The Knicks' front office folks are already trying to have the account closed down.
Pretty funny....and of course it's become very popular to mock people now-a-days. None I've seen have ever done it better than this one...

I guess it's like having a skit on SNL to a degree...if someone wants to fake an account Moz, you're on people's radar.

Timofey Mozgov, Russia (New York Knicks) -- The 24-year-old, 7-foot-1 center impressed USA and Lakers forward Lamar Odom when the two went head to head in the quarterfinals (Mozgov went 4-for-4 in the first quarter), but the Russian struggled with fouls late in the game. Mozgov, whom the Knicks signed to a three-year, $9.7 million contract in July, is loaded with potential. He's an excellent pick-and-roll player with soft hands and a nice touch around the rim, and though he's raw and needs to become a better rebounder, his 13-point average in the tournament suggests he could quickly develop into a steal for New York.
Now it's time to make the rotation...finger point to Andrew Sydney for the link...

Rick Pitino has a great quote when asked years ago about his high-octane offense that was centered, not so much around the franchise center in Patrick Ewing, but around a fast-paced 3-point fest. The Knicks chucked so many 3s that they marketed themselves "The Bomb Squad." (Side note: Newman was a legend around White Plains for quietly sneaking out and shooting hoops with the local kids. Awesome guy.)

"The ball has to start in the post," Pitino concluded. "Wherever that is."
Having a player in Ewing led to some success for the former Knicks coach, who led the Knicks to the Atlantic Division title and 52 wins in 1989, but his style wasn't conducive to pleasing Ewing, so after the coach left for Lexington, Kentucky the Knicks made sure to get Ewing more touches in the post and his FGs per game soared.

I bring this up because of a note from Alan Hahn today in discussing Mozgov:

In nine games, Mozgov scored in double-figures in all but two, despite the fact that he rarely was featured in David Blatt's pick-and-roll offense. The 24-year-old showed himself to be extremely active on the offensive end, as he routinely set screens and quickly dove into the lane (several times he was open but did not get the ball). On the post, he clearly needs a lot of work (paging Patrick Ewing...) and he's a non-threat outside the paint as a scorer, but he does have soft hands and good passing instincts.
Are there ANY good post players? Are there more coming down the pike? Dwight Howard hasn't become even a decent half-court post presence in terms of polished moves. If he did, the Magic would have a ring. Yao Ming has the skills, but with his foot issues i imagine he'll become the full-time face up big Ewing became in his later years.

Jared Zwerling of ESPN-NY sees Anderson Varejao in Timofey Mozgov. It's not a horrible comparison as there are a few similarities, but I wouldn't say it hits the mark for one reason.

Varejao is an accomplished rebounder, which Mozgov is not at this point. But maybe this is why? Fundamentals. Varejao pulled down 5 rebounds per 16 minutes in his first 2 seasons in the NBA.His best statistical season, Varejao yanked down 8 in 27 minutes. In fairness, both play with very high motors and are capable around the basket, yet neither will remind you of Patrick Ewing from a jump shooting standpoint.

Worst case scenario, he's Varejao; best case, Brook Lopez, a potential cross-river foe for years to come.
He has to rebound. Has to. And I believe he can be able to. But he has to show better instincts for the ball, which concerns me.? If the Knicks don't rebound they won't win, it's pretty much as simple as that. You can talk about possessions, field goal percentage, TS%, etc, rebounding on the defensive end and creating second opportunities on the offensive end are critical to wins and losses in this system.

?You can?t teach what he has ? body, size and athletic ability,? said Tony Ronzone, the director of international player personnel for USA Basketball. ?They?re hard to find in the world.?

?I think it?s going to be easier for him in the N.B.A. than in Europe,? Blatt said. ?He?s not going to have to be a lead player, and they?ll probably put him in a small area of the game where he has to pick and cut or run the break hard, which he does extremely well.

According to a source, Knicks free agent center Earl Barron turned down an offer recently from Maccabi Tel Aviv because he's confident he will sign with an NBA team soon.

The Knicks showed interest in re-signing him, but because they overpaid for young Russian center Timofey Mozgov with a three-year, $9 million deal, brass ultimately has to see if he can contribute in his rookie year.

Nevertheless, if Mozgov has a poor World Championships for Russia, sources said they could revisit Barron before training camp if he's unsigned.

Didn't the Post report the Knicks were "done" with Barron the other day? Also, I think it's fair to question saying the team overpaid for a player when he hasn't even suited up yet.
