The Mets have released nine minor league players today including: (the tastefully named) RHP Tobi Stoner, LHP Eric Niesen, RHP Nick Carr, LHP Roy Merritt, RHP Chris Hilliard, RHP Ronny Morla, RHP Steve Winnick, 1B?Lucas Stewart and CF Chase Greene.

Stoner, the Mets' 16th round pick in 2006, had the most success of this group, reaching the big leagues in September of 2009. He made four relief appearances in 2009, and one more in 2010, but will be remembered more for his name than his pitching. He was moving backwards in the minors too: AAA Buffalo where he pitched to a 5.97 ERA, was his only minor league stop in 2010 before making 16 starts for double-A Binghamton in 2011. This year, with prospects like Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia, Zack Wheeler, Darin Gorski and Colin McHugh and Armando Rodriguez fighting for spots in double-A and triple-A there was no room anymore for a place-holder like Stoner. I had Stoner ranked #31 in the system in 2009, and #32 in 2010. He missed the 2011 and 2012 lists.

Merritt, originally a 27th round draft pick, was the 2009 Binghamton Mets Pitcher of the Year?in 2009. (Hey, Josh Thole was the position Player of the Year: 1-for-2 ain't bad.) Merritt owned a 5.65 ERA at AA Binghamton in 2011, where righties hit .309/.367/.398 against him. I had Merritt ranked as the #40 prospect in the system in 2009 and 2010. He was unranked the last two years.

AAA: Buffalo Bisons 10, @ Columbus Clippers 2

Zach Lutz (2-3, HR(10), 3RBI) homered for the fifth time in his last 12 games, leading the Bisons to a 10-2 rout over Columbus. ?Lutz pushes his season totals to .312/.398/.534, with 10 HR and 27 RBI (53 games).

When healthy and in the lineup, Lutz has hit at every level, but like a couple of other unnamed Mets prospects he just has to find a way to stay on the field.

Tobi Stoner pitched two-hit ball over seven innings, but Josh Stinson could not finish the deal, allowing three runs on four hits in the eighth. ?Stoner allowed just two singles and an unearned run while walking three and striking out four.

The B-Mets took the lead in the top of the eighth by a Reese Havens (1-3, RBI, BB) single, plating Jon Malo.

Bowie Baysox (BAL) 14, @ Binghamton Mets 6

We'll start with something good here first: 2B Jordany Valdespin was 2-for-5. ?He was pulled from Wednesday's game after the second inning and the word out of Binghamton was that he was not injured, which implies that he was being disciplined. ?For what, I have no idea, but at least the discipline wasn't severe enough to keep him out any length of time.

Allan Dykstra (.270/.398/.436) was 2-for-4 with two walks to reach base four times.

AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 5, @ Buffalo Bisons 3

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning and the Bisons leading 3-2, Bobby Parnell was summoned to pitch to Yankees top prospect Jesus Montero. ?Montero took a 0-1 hanging slider deep over the right-center field wall for a go-ahead three-run home run. Josh Stinson (pictured)was in line for the victory before the Montero blast. ?Stinson's 7 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 2 er, 0 bb, 6k performance was his best since joining the Bisons.

Val Pascucci (1-4, HR (2), RBI) hit his second home run of the season for the Bisons. ?Michael Fischer (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Nick Evans (2-4) each had multi-hit games.

AAA: Lehigh Valley 6, @ Buffalo Bisons 1

Tobi Stoner (5-10, 6.07) gave up four runs on 10 hits and four walks in 5.1 innings without striking out a single batter.? I pointed this out in relation to Dillon Gee on twitter yesterday, but the average ERA in the IL is 4.17.? That makes Stoner almost two full runs of ERA worse than AAA average.? Stoner has allowed 18 homers in 110.1 innings, or 1.5/9 IP.? Yikes.

Not a good night for the kids: Lucas Duda (.308/.366/.660) was 1-4 with a double, but struck out twice, while Ruben Tejada and Nick Evans were both 0-4. Fernando Martinez sat.

While Tobi Stoner has not had Gee's brilliant starts, but he's also avoided the worst of his blowups.? Saturday, Stoner (5-8, 5.67) gave up five runs on nine hits, including one home run, while walking one and fanning four in five innings.

Andy Braunstein of the Mets and Yankee Reporter, which appears to have no web presence I can link to, attended Tobi Stoner's performance in the PWL on Wednesday and sent out an email with his observations.

The best news says Braunstein was that twice, Stoner retired Pudge Rodriguez with a runner aboard.?? Braunstein writes:

All in all it was a typical Stoner performance, using mainly FBs ....hiding the ball well and good placement to get soft pops, soft GB and easy flys. [sic]

The Arizona Fall League released the first draft of its rosters Wednesday. The Mets assigned 23 year old RHP Tobi Stoner and 25 year old LHP Jason Vargas, 21 year old C Josh Thole, 23 year old INF Dan Murphy and 23 year old 3B Shawn Bowman to the Peoria Saguaros. The Mets can send two more pitchers to the league.

The AFL begins play on October 7th, which happens to be the day that both NL Division Series are tentatively scheduled for game five if they go that far. So hopefully Dan Murphy?s resting up for the NLCS.

Stoner is 4-6 with a 4.62 ERA in 14 starts for Binghamton. In 74 IP, he?s fanned 57 (6.9 K/9) and walked 26 (3.2 BB/9).

Tobi Stoner's seven shutout innings last night continued a very impressive turnaround. After his first seven starts in AA, he was 0-4, with a 6.11 ERA.

In his last four starts, Stoner is 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA. In those 26 IP, he's allowed just 12 hits for an opponents' batting average of .140. He's fanned 19 and walked five for a K/BB of 2.71.

The night I saw him in Binghamton, Stoner's fastball was anywhere from 88-92 mph, although it was mostly 89 and 90 mph. He says his fastball was a little quicker earlier in the year. He threw a curve, a slider and a changeup, which he used only sparingly that evening. I wouldn't describe any of his off-speed pitches as "nasty" he did throw them for strikes.
