Tobias Harris has a very good reason to opt for restricted free agency next summer instead of signing a long-term extension with the Orlando Magic before the Oct. 31 deadline.

Confirming a Chris Broussard?tweet from earlier Friday, sources told SNY.tv that Harris gets an upgrade in his Nike contract if he plays in either New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.

NEWARK, N.J. -- Long Island's Tobias Harris was drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats at No. 19 but was dealt to Milwaukee as part of a three-team trade.

The Bobcats sent the 6-foot-8 Harris to the Bucks as part of Thursday?s deal. The Bucks also received Charlotte forward Stephen Jackson, Bobcats guard Shaun Livingston and guard Beno Udrih from Sacramento.

Harris, a Dix Hills, N.Y. native who spent one season at Tennessee, averaged 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds as a freshman with the Volunteers.?

Villanova-bound forward JayVaughn Pinkston of Bishop Loughlin, Tennessee commit Tobias Harris of Half Hollow Hills West, Duke-bound guard Kyrie Irving of St. Patrick and Queens native Doron Lamb of Oak Hill Academy will play in the game March 31 at the Value City Arena in Columbia, Ohio.

"I'm the first [player] from my school to make the McDonald's game; that's big," the 6-foot-5 Pinkston told Chris Lawlor of ESPN.com. "In the end, it's not about individual stuff but getting the 'W.' You take nothing for granted; I did my talking on the court."

This holiday weekend is a huge one for high-level high school hoops, with prestigious events at the Hoophall Classic, the Dan Finn Classic, the Big Apple Basketball Invitational and the Freedom Fighters Challenge.

I've linked the schedules to all four events at the bottom of this post.

I'm going to head over to Jason Curry's Big Apple Basketball Invitational Saturday and Monday. It's about a 15-block walk from my apartment and Jen and I are going to see 'Avatar' Saturday night after the games. Jason always puts on a first-class event and this year is no exception.

Despite the recent charges against four members of the Tennessee men's basketball program, the Vols highest profile recruit is standing by the school.

Tobias Harris, a 6-foot-8 senior forward from Long Island who signed in November with Tennessee, said he views the program as "family" and stands by his commitment.

"When members of a family go through adversity, you remain strong," he wrote in a text message. "You can name a lot of negatives about the program right now but you can name some very important positives, such as me being the leader I am and a first-class kid on and off the court that I can have a greater impact in turning this situation around in a more positive way than it is now, not only with basketball but with everything else."

JayVaughn Pinkston, a 6-6 combo forward from Brooklyn Bishop Loughlin considered the top prospect in New York City, will announce at 3 p.m. Wednesday at his school.

The Daily News reported on its Website Tuesday that sources indicated Pinkston would announce for Tennessee, but New Heights athletic director Kimani Young said, "Nobody confirmed that."

After I initally posted this earlier today, I came across Kyrie's interview with DimeMag where he says this about Duke.

"I guess you could say that I?m leaning toward Duke. I?m just not ready to commit. It was my first visit and of course I?m really high on them and like I said I have that feeling, but I think it?s only smart to compare it to something," the 6-2 Irving said.

He added: "Well, I?ve got that feeling with Duke, but I want to go on a few more visits to compare it all. I?m not ready to commit yet. I just want to make sure everything is right. Duke and Indiana were my top two schools, and Duke is up there, but I like the other schools too."

Maryland, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky and Syracuse remain in the hunt for the 6-foot-8 Harris, the No. 5 overall prospect in the Class of 2010 and a senior at Dix Hills (N.Y.) Half Hollow Hills West.

Three of the four schools cut are from the Big East -- St. John's, UConn and Notre Dame -- as well as Oklahoma. But three -- Louisville, Syracuse and West Virginia -- remain.

Army AD Kevin Anderson announced Thursday morning that he was officially firing head? coach Jim Crews.

?There was a series of events that led me down the path to determine that I needed to make a change in leadership of the men?s basketball program and terminate coach Crews? contract,? Anderson stated. ?I am very disappointed with some things that have come to my attention in recent days and I have decided that it is in the best interests of the basketball program and the institution to terminate our relationship.?

In seven years as Army?s head coach, Crews registered a 60-139 (.302) record. He led Army to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals each of the last three seasons. Army finished 11-19 overall a year ago.

From John Calipari to Mike Krzyzewski to Jim Calhoun, the biggest names in college coaching have been beating a path to the doors of some of the top high school basketball players in the New York metropolitan area.

The NCAA contact period runs from Sept. 9 until Oct. 5, so college coaches use this time to watch prospects during open gyms and to make their recruiting pitches to kids and their parents during home visits.

This is the critical period when relationships can be made or broken and future NCAA championships can be determined.

Maryland coach Gary Williams, who took a lot of heat last year for his supposed failures in recruiting, received a one-year extension through 2013.

"I'm pleased for Gary that he met the competitive and academic benchmarks of his contract," said Maryland AD Deborah Yow. "The 2009-10 season has the potential to be one of the best in recent memory."

Williams, recently voted onto the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, is the winningest coach in Maryland history and enters the season with a 418-229 mark in his previous 20 seasons in College Park.

Tobias Harris plans to cut his list of schools down to five after his home visit with UConn on Wednesday.

"We're going to think about it for a week and then a week later we're going to cut it down," said Torrel Harris, Tobias dad. "We're going to go over everything. We're not going to rush on cutting it down because everyone came in here with a plan. Everybody came in with a plan."

UConn will be the final school of a group of 11 to come in and make its presentation.

Trevor Releford, a 6-foot, 180-pound point guard from Shawnee Mission (KS) Bishop Miege, committed to Alabama Friday over Oklahoma.

"Yes. I liked the campus, the players and the coaches," he said by phone.

Releford, the younger brother of Kansas guard Travis Releford, previously said he likes Alabama because of his relationship with new head coach Anthony Grant.
