Tom Coughlin wasn't kidding. He is moving on to Washington. The Giants are just 48 hours away from their next game against a tough Redskins team that went blow-for-blow with Ndamakong Suh and the Dolphins and Aaron Donald and the Rams in consecutive weeks. They are a far cry from the dysfunctional group we saw in the preseason and the national media made them out to be.

The Giants are facing a short week, with two games in five days this week. First, they will host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday and then the Redskins will be coming in right behind them on Thursday. It will be a real challenge for a team that has yet to field it's full starting lineup this year and hasn't been able to gel on either side of the ball.

Here's what Giants head coach Tom Coughlin had to say on this Friday, the 14th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania:

"Very emotional for all of us. We should always remember. We should never forget the lessons learned on 9/11. But one of the things to really grab a hold of is the way it unified our country, and made us literally one, with everyone saying what can we do? What can we do?

Tom Coughlin met the media after Saturday's 22-12 preseason win over Jacksonville at MetLife Stadium:

"I think we improved a little bit tonight; nothing earth shaking, but we did get a little bit better. We?re going to have to get a lot better. We came out throwing the ball, and obviously we were not as accurate as you?d like. We ended up throwing the ball away too many times, but we did have a lot of plays. A lot of people got experience out there tonight. Nassib kind of fought his way through some tough goings early on and played better towards the end. I felt there were some outstanding individual plays, but again, it?s in front of us. It?s not all there right now, but to win is a good thing. To win at home is a good thing."

The Giants paid WR/KR Dwayne Harris a hefty contract this month according to most, but the coach revealed that Harris' value goes beyond his play on special teams.

?Remember how we used to use [David] Tyree?? Coughlin said. ?He would come in and be a blocker. That?s what Harris does. You see him on the field and you start thinking that way. And that part alone opens a lot of possibilities. Maybe you get back into the old fake, ghost screen stuff. So it just opens a lot of things up. Whether he becomes the third or fourth receiver or a special situation kind of player offensively, he wants to contribute on offense and he will be given that opportunity.?

Tom Coughlin expressed a concern Wednesday morning at the NFL meetings regarding the Giants' dearth at the safety position. (Raanan, Mar 25)

"That's an issue, no doubt," Coughlin said. "We do have one more access to bringing in personnel, obviously the draft. We have a couple guys in the program, [Nat] Berhe we really like as a rookie as a special-teamer. We have injured players coming back that hopefully will help. There is concern, no doubt."

The two safeties listed on the roster are Berhe and the oft-injured Cooper Taylor, who is entering his third season with the club and has yet to be assigned a position on the defense.

On Thursday, we printed Tom Coughlin's comments at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis (BBB, Feb 19). We learned that he is unconcerned about his status, that he considers coaching in the NFL a year-by-year proposition. He said talks about a contract extension was underway.

We also learned that the Giants are serious about retaining JPP and Antrel Rolle, but we already knew that.

We also were told the defense, under returning DC Steve Spagnuolo, will be more sophisticated and that Ben McAdoo had shown growth in his first season as the offensive playcaller.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has spent most of the second half of this season speaking about amazing rookie WR Odell Beckham, Jr. Monday morning, on his conference call with reporters, Coughlin took the time to recognize several other rookies:

"I would have to say I was very pleased with a lot of our young guys, to be honest with you," the coach said. "I would talk about Kerry Wynn for a minute, with an interception, a fumble recovery and playing a lot more in the rotation than he normally would have because of Damontr? Moore?s ejection. I also would recognize Nat Berhe, who did an outstanding job of recovering a fumble and making a tackle on the kickoff at the 10-yard line. Orleans Darkwa, who forced a fumble and then had an opportunity to play in the game and scored a touchdown on an outstanding run where he started one way and [the Rams] defense surrounded him and then all of a sudden, he broke out of the crowd and got in position to where he was able to score a touchdown there."

The Giants will attempt to end their seven-game losing streak in Tennessee this Sunday, in a game that has little meaning in the standings, but will have a big impact on how the Giants will be shaped in 2015.

GM Jerry Reese, who is on the hot seat depending on who you believe, will have his past two draft classes on display. RT Justin Pugh, WR Odell Beckham, Jr. DT Jonathan Hankins, LG Weston Richburg, DE Damontre Moore and LB Devon Kennard will all be in the starting lineup against the Titans this Sunday.

And, with RB Rashad Jennings dealing with a sore ankle, Andre Williams will be called upon to carry the load against Tennessee's rush defense, who rank last in the league (141.5 YPG) after 14 weeks.

Some quotes and reactions after Sunday's 30-17 win over Houston at MetLife Stadium, the Giants' first victory of the season...

Head coach Tom Coughlin: "Nice to win. Nice to win, nice to do a lot of good things in the process. We talked about winning the turnover battle, obviously we?re plus-two. Rushed for 193, we had interception turnovers. We blocked a punt, which is really, really good. We won the time of possession and we forced them to play from behind. They hadn?t played from behind much this year and that was a strong contributor as well. We left some plays out there, no doubt. We had the bad snap from center, that hurt us on the field goal. We had the turnover of the drive, some of the long drives that we had, but they came out in the second half, made some adjustments and moved the ball but we were able to go down and score, the turnovers in point-blank range and put the points on the board. Good win for our team, we needed it. A lot of guys played well, I?m looking forward to looking at this tape. Short week so here we go."

QB Eli Manning: "That is the way it is supposed to work. I thought it started up front with our offensive line. They did an outstanding job opening up lanes. Rashad [Jennings] ran hard. We didn?t get stuck in many third-and-longs. We didn?t have many third downs at all, it felt like. Receivers, we got the ball out quick. The receivers made catches. They had good runs after the catch. It was efficient. We mixed it up and went to no-huddle, then we went with some standard offense and huddled up. I thought we had a good combination and a good mix. Guys were well-prepared and we played well, but we still have to fix some things."

Tom Quinn's tenure here as the Giants' special teams coordinator has been like a Baja jeep run: Never dull, up one minute and down the next with a lot of jolts and thrills, with some complete wipeouts thrown in. Through it all, however, he's been able to keep his job, his composure and his focus.

This year, Quinn had a slew of new talent and options in house, practically securing a big season for his units. The Giants were poised to have an explosive return game. Trindon Holliday was signed to return punts. The team's top draft pick, Odell Beckham, Jr., was in line to challenge him. Quintin Demps, a very accomplished KR, was brought in to be paired with David Wilson, who was coming back from neck surgery, to return kickoffs.

John Brown beat out upstart Brandon McManus for the PK job. P Steve Weatherford and LS Zak DeOssie were coming back in better shape than ever. Zack Bowman, Jayron Hosley, Jerrel Jernigan, Marcus Harris, Cooper Taylor and Will Hill were all scheduled to make major contributions as gunners, returners and blockers.

The Giants practiced in full pads this afternoon at QDTC for the second consecutive day. Head coach Tom Coughlin was all for his team getting physical this early in training camp.

"You have to put the pads on. You are not going to get it done with shorts and t-shirts" Coughlin said after practice. "It?s a physical game and it has to be played upfront, it has to be technically sound, and you must be able to physically be in the position where you are making the blocks or you are defending. We have always put tremendous stock on what is up front with our offensive line and our defensive line as a measure of literally the strength of our team. We are glad to be in the pads and as each day passes, they are challenged to be more physical. We always talk about being smart because we don?t want anyone to do anything stupid that costs us a player, but the physical aspect of the game is something we have to definitely get back to."

The first preseason game is this Sunday vs the Buffalo Bills in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, so Coughlin is starting to formulate his strategy on who will play and how the game plan will be structured.

The times of this year's training camp workouts may be set, but the structure is not. Hydration breaks have been built in and now an extended period of stretching was installed during the last half-hour of practice.

"That was a recovery stretch," Head coach Tom Coughlin told the media afterward. "We are trying to enhance this soft-muscle business. What we?ve done is we studied the GPS information, which helps us structure the practice and to know when we should be doing things such as [stretching] and cutting down reps on the field. The whole purpose is to be able to come back and have a full-speed practice tomorrow."

Full speed was not something rookie WR Odell Beckham was going this afternoon. Coughlin showed concern over the team's top pick and his lingering hamstring problem.

This week Giants head coach Tom Coughlin sat down with Kimberly Jones of the NFL Network to discuss the status of QB Eli Manning, who is coming off an ankle injury and his worst season in Blue. I remember when he had the shoulder injury and everyone in his family was saying he won't play for five or six weeks. He played the next weekend, so I don't see...as a matter of fact, he's probably throwing the ball with more velocity out here right now then he's thrown it in the last couple of years."

Tom Coughlin is staying put. That's the way the Giants want it and that is certainly the way he wants it. At 67, he is the oldest coach in the NFL. He's still as vibrant and energetic as ever and has no plans of stepping away...

From ESPN NewYork:

"I certainly do, and I'm blessed with good health and good energy and a routine that I think puts me in the maximum opportunity to stay healthy," Coughlin said before mentioning his wife. "The other issue, of course, is Judy. If Judy's healthy, and so on and so forth, and we both feel good about continuing ... then no doubt will we feel that way."
Coughlin is a proven commodity and the Giants know they are lucky to have him. ?The Giants are aware of how difficult it is to find a head coach in this league. The candidate pool is fairly thin.

Many would like to see Tom Coughlin ride off into the sunset and have the Giants bring in new head coach. That may or may not solve their problems. In my opinion, Coughlin is not the issue. Another coach might have gone 3-13 or 4-12 with this bunch, instead of 7-9 like Tom did.

The Giants have personnel problems in the assistant coach and player ranks. Too many misses in the draft and in free agency. Too many assistant coaches have overstayed their welcome. They've also hung on to certain players too long and that has prevented them from stocking?and backfilling their roster with viable options and replacements.

Now that the brass has expressed their desire to bring Tom back in 2014, the next step is ponder what that does for the team right now and down the road. Coughlin is a stand-up guy and a great football coach. Regardless of what the public thinks, he is not an NFL luddite. He can - and has- changed with the times.

For those who may not want Tom Coughlin back, read no further. He's practically a cinch to be on the Giants' sideline next September.

A two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach, Coughlin may have turned in one of the best efforts of his long career in 2013, guiding his team back from an 0-6 freefall to a 7-9 finish. Still a losing season, but at least they went out with dignity. They went out fighting. They were a true representation of their coach.

The Giants played hard for Coughlin for seventeen weeks. They fought even after they didn't get the results they sought and then when they knew the postseason was out of reach. He never lost the locker room, as some suggested. His message did not fall on deaf ears, as some intimated.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin wanted to finish the 2013 season strong, and his team did, by rolling over the Washington Redskins, 20-6, this afternoon at rain-soaked MetLife Stadium. He told the media he was proud of the way his team hung in after four more offensive starters (QB Eli Manning, LT Will Beatty and WR Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle) succumbed to injury.....

"I?m proud of our team, not only how they rallied today, but to win the last two ball games. I thought the way we played today ? we had a lot of injuries; a lot of things happened out there ? obviously not a great day, and the weather too. But everybody hung in there on both sides and battled well. There were a lot of turnovers in the game, naturally, because of the weather, but I liked the way we finished."

"We did put the ball on the ground there toward the end and we made substantial yardage. We were playing down to our last offensive lineman ? we didn?t have any left. We had a couple of injuries there, so I was happy with the way we finished. Our defense played very, very well, and did not allow them really any points in the second half. The outcome of the game was good."

Giants' head coach Tom Coughlin has been heavily criticized for the team's subpar performance this season. Many wonder if his message is losing it's bite on the veterans and not quite reaching the younger players.

Coughlin has modeled much of his approach after the some of the greatest coaches in American history (John Wooden, Vince Lombardi) finding and using various methods to motivate his team....

"For me, it?s a matter of pride, it?s a matter of who you represent, it?s a matter of your teammates depending on you, it?s a matter of your character and who you are. You?re making a strong statement about who you are, whether you?re a fighter or a competitor, how you?re going to be influenced. Competitive greatness is something that we talk about and it starts deep within and it?s the nature of the game. Men are lured to the most difficult of challenges and that?s the game of football completely. In this day and age, the way in which the media and the video world, and the way in which you can have information so quickly at your disposal, a man is who he is. I think that?s an important thing, too. Your family is involved. Your family name is involved. Who you are and what you represent and what your character is and how you stand as a man, in the most difficult of times, in the best of times. We?ve had it both ways around here. We?ve had people in that Super Bowl locker room and we?ve had people in our locker room after we?ve had disappointing losses. How do we handle it and what kind of men are we if we are completely opposite and don?t rise to the occasion and meet the bell when things aren?t going well. I take that stuff very seriously."

Tom Coughlin was proud of his team last night after they knocked off the Detroit Lions at Ford Field for their sixth win of the season....

?Nice to win. That was a very, very nice ending for a bunch of guys that worked their butts off this week, despite all that was being said about us. We had an offensive line that certainly very little tribute was paid to the week before. I thought they came up and played with great heart. Dallas Reynolds, who was one of our two backup guys, ended up playing about three quarters of the game as (Brandon) Mosley broke his hand. He had to go in there and battle against (Ndamukong) Suh and did a nice job of that. And then back and forth, Will Hill scored, our defense played an outstanding ball game. The turnovers, unfortunately we had a couple of them. Gosh, that one with Andre Brown, that hurt, but we were able to bounce back from that. We certainly demonstrated resiliency. We demonstrated mental toughness."

"We had a nice lead at halftime, came out in the second half in the third quarter, didn?t look very good offensively. Three-and-outs, three-and-outs. They came up with a big punt return on us, which hurt. But then the fourth quarter, we battled back. We did have a very nice kickoff return, which we worked very hard to accomplish and hadn?t had a lot of success, but certainly a ball that was returned probably five deep in the end zone, gave us the ball at midfield. Lots of outstanding plays in the game, lots of physical football. A lot of big plays. Jerrel Jernigan made plays, the fourth-down call there, the sliding catch that put us in position to kick the field goal. That was a huge play. That?s not easy, you?re talking about another?.first time I punted was 4th-and-10 and this looked like another fourth and, what was it seven or eight? We decided to go for it. We were into overtime, guys had played a lot of plays. Let?s see if we can make a play to put ourselves into position to end the game and we did.?

The Giants embraced the role of playing spoiler in a 23-20 overtime win, but it really was the Lions that blew this game more so than the Giants actually rising to the occasion.

The loss eliminates the Lions from playoff contention. But even so, the Giants? offense looked totally inept at times ? in fact, most of the time.

Big Blue led 13-3 at halftime, and for the most part, the makeshift offense line held its own against a tough Detroit defensive front. And Jerrel Jernigan ? who was the team?s leading receiver last week against the Seahawks ? had four catches, including a great catch on his first career touchdown reception, in the first half.

Here?s a good strategy for an offense: Actually get the ball into your opponent?s territory.

The Giants did not accomplish that feat until the nine-minute mark of the fourth quarter in Sunday?s loss to the Seahawks, so it?s up to offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride to figure out how to move the ball.

Of course, five more interceptions from Eli Manning didn?t help, but it wasn?t all his fault.

Tom Coughlin keeps rolling along. He's not throwing in the towel on this season. There are two games remaining and Tom is heavily focused on finishing strong. This week, the Giants travel to Detroit to play the 7-7 Lions, who lost their hold on first place of the NFC North when they lost, 18-16 to the Ravens on Monday night.

"We prepare for the Detroit Lions, a team that lost a very difficult game the other night when the young man kicked a 61-yard field goal to beat them right at the end in Detroit. We travel to Detroit. Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are the third leading offense in the NFL, third in passing, ninth in scoring, sixth on third down offense and fourth in the green zone, with only 16 sacks. They do an outstanding job of taking care of the quarterback. Their defense is 16th, but they?re first in third down defense. They?re first in the red zone and they have (Ndamukong) Suh and (Nick) Fairley and now (Ezekiel) Ansah, (Stephen) Tulloch and those people, just to name a few of the outstanding defensive players.

Their special teams are sixth on kickoff return, third on punt coverage, 14th?in punt return. Sam Martin, the outstanding rookie punter, also kicks off and has done a great job with the 41.6 net. David Akers, the placekicker we?ve seen for a long time, has an outstanding, strong leg. Jeremy Ross has become the outstanding punt returner and kickoff returner. Four punt returns of more than 35 yards. Three kickoff returns of more than 40 and a punt return and kickoff return against Philadelphia for touchdowns in the snow.

Tom Coughlin believes he has the coaches, the personnel and the strategy to make the Giants winners again. He confirmed that belief today in his Monday media session.

I can imagine it?s hard to find plays that work."It certainly hasn?t been a connect-all-the-dots from day one type of year. Kevin?s a pro, he?s been around, he?s done this a long time. We try to find ways to take advantage of things. It hasn?t been easy."

Has the staff tried to do anything different with the offense as the struggles have continued through the season? You don?t always do the same thing, but maybe?A: Well, it?s not the same thing. There are different buckets that you would draw things from and different concepts and so we change the concepts up and we try to create some different personnel combinations, so it?s not all the same. It?s never all the same, but it?s according to what we see in terms of the defense that we?re playing against.

Re: fact that core of offensive playmakers have been together for awhileA: We?ve got a lot of new parts, too. You?ve got players that haven?t played and players that have an experience. They may have listened to your presentation a couple of years, but they haven?t really experienced it. So those new guys are trying to soak it all in and be a part of a better form of execution, which we?re still striving to get to.

Does it help the coaching staff that you guys have been through problems together?A: It certainly helps that we can communicate in a speedy fashion and recognize the issues, perhaps have some thoughts about having been there before, as you say. But by and large, the fact that we have been there and have worked together for a while is certainly a plus.

Tom Coughlin says he expects the fans to be supportive when his team hosts the Seahawks this Sunday. He seemed to be more edgy than usual this morning during his weekly presser. Some highlights...

On if he plans on taking the Super Bowl "Countdown Clock" down: "I didn't put it up, so I'm not taking it down."

There has been a lot of chatter about the younger players getting more snaps the next few weeks. Coughlin put the brakes on that train of thought.

Some highlights from Tom Coughlin's presser this afternoon. Questions are pouring in about MLB Jon Beason, perhaps one of the best in-season acquisitions in the history of the club. The coach also spoke about the recent strong play of punter Steve Weatherford. Injuries will be covered in a later post.

I don?t know if you look down the road, but Jon Beason is a free agent after this year. Do you sit there?"I don?t look down the road. Please. We?ve got a game. He?s a middle linebacker. I hope we can take care of those kinds of things first. If you?re going to ask me if he?s played well? Yeah, he?s played well."

Would you say Beason exceeded expectations in how quickly he was able to make an impact?"I think a lot of the research that we did was extremely positive about the kind of personality and energy that he brought and we were prepared for that, but we were pleased."

Sure we can look at the Victor Cruz fumble that was returned for a touchdown or the three third-down conversions by Tony Romo on that final drive as the main reasons the Giants lost last weekend.

But really, settling for field goals in two early red zone opportunities ultimately resulted in Big Blue leaving points on the board, which in turn wound up being huge in the loss.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride came under some heat for his play-calling within the 10-yard-line.

Snippets from Tom Coughlin's presser today at QDTC...

On the mood of the team: "They responded well this morning in our meetings. I think they are looking forward to going and playing again and having a chance to respond....It just helps to get back to work. Let?s not talk about yesterday and the day before. Let?s look at what is coming up. That?s what helps, to be honest with you. It?s not easy. Those losses hang around a long time when you?ve been in it as long as I have."

On today's practice: "We?ll talk a little bit about who will and who won?t practice today. Brandon Jacobs will not practice today, Trumaine McBride will not practice, Jason Pierre-Paul will not practice, Terrell Thomas, this is his day and we hope to have the rest of the guys on the practice field. It looks like we have a good chance."
