At Coming Down The Pipe, they look at some possible rookies for the Rangers this season.

Tim Erixon, Pavel Valentenko, Tomas Kundratek and Ryan Bourque are some of the players mentioned as possible candidates for roster spots.

Valentenko really did come close to making the team last season. He and Ryan McDonagh were the last cuts on defense and it will be interesting to see how he fares during camp. Kundratek is someone that most people forget about but he has a nice talent level. I think he could spend, at least, another year in the minors.

In a sample of the draft guide Red Line Report, from 2008, they rank first round pick Michael Del Zotto 32nd and write, "offensive machine, but can't skate or defend."

Third round pick Evgeni Grachev was ranked 34th and was described as someone with "great tools, less hockey sense than Gary Bettman,"

Fellow third round pick Tomas Kundratek was ranked 42nd and called a "sturdy "D" can bang in the corners and move the puck."

At NYRangers.com, they look at 2008 third round pick Tomas Kundratek as part of their "20 Prospects In 20 Days" series.

Kundratek draws comparisons to Michael Sauer for the way that Sauer played his first year in Hartford.

Sauer played three seasons in Hartford and Kundratek may follow that same kind of path. I like him as a prospect and he is only 21 years old and has plenty of time ahead to develop. The Rangers defense is very young which could provide road blocks, but the Rangers will play the best players and if Kundratek develops into one of them, he will play.

At Howlings, Bruce Bertlet writes in his regular column about Rangers assistant to GM Glen Sather, Mark Messier, attending Whale practice.

Bertlet quotes Messier as saying that Tomas Kundratek has a nice career ahead of him:

?He really looks like he?s going to be a NHL player.?

In 2008, the Rangers drafted Tomas Kundratek in the third round, 15 picks after Evgeny Grachev.

Kundratek is playing with the Hartford Wolfpack/Whale this season as a rookie. Here is his profile from the Rangers prospect series over the summer.

?Tomas is a young kid who?s very competitive and physical, but he sometimes had a tendency to run around. But that?s only because he?s so competitive and wants to finish a hit and go to the next hit, so at times you have to tame it down and have some awareness and not run around the puck, just play position, like everyone else on the ice.
