Thomas McNamara scored a spectacular goal before crashing into the back of the net and New York City FC tied FC Dallas 1-1 on Sunday night.

David Villa earned a free kick in the 68th minute, sending his shot off the crossbar. With goal keeper Jesse Gonzalez falling to the ground after a leaping attempt to block the shot, the ball deflected straight down and bounced into the air. McNamara raced in at full speed and got his head on the ball as he leaped through the flailing legs of Gonzalez before landing in the back netting of the goal.

That was the only on-target shot for NYCFC (5-3-2) but it wasn't enough to keep Dallas (5-0-4) from remaining the only undefeated team. Nine games without a loss to open the season has Dallas closing in on the league record of 12, held by four teams, the last being Real Salt Lake in 2014. Dallas is unbeaten in 14 straight MLS games.

Tommy Dee, SNY.TV:

Dating back to the draft of 2009, I spent many a moment thinking about the Knicks drafting UCLA's Jrue Holiday. Having learned how infatuated Donnie Walsh and the Knicks were with Russell Westbrook the year before, Holiday had similar qualities and came from a pro system under Ben Howland that seemed to be the right fit at the time.

Fast forward almost eight years later and Jrue's brother Justin, also a fellow Pac-10 star having played at Washington, is coming off the bench for the Knicks and providing a ton of value for Jeff Hornacek's second unit. Not bad for a guy widely considered, including here, a simple throw in to the Derrick Rose blockbuster.

Phil Jackson receives a ton of flak for the money he's spent on Joakim Noah, but he gets literally zero credit for the lower-priced value he's brought to New York, and Holiday may be the best of the bunch.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored twice, Sacha Kljestan had a goal and two assists and the New York Red Bulls beat New York City FC 4-1 on Sunday.

Wright-Phillips poked a shot from the center of the box, off the pass from Kljestan, past a charging Josh Saunders in the 20th minute. Three minutes later, Kljestan found Ronald Zubar who gave the Red Bulls (9-9-4) a 2-0 lead.

Kljestan converted a penalty kick, after a hand ball in the penalty area by Frederic Brillant, in the 41st minute.

Thomas McNamara scored in the 65th minute to give New York City FC a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Sunday.

McNamara's 20-yard shot curled around goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and into the upper corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

NYCFC (4-3-4) took the lead in the 12th minute under controversial circumstances. Defender RJ Allen appeared to use his hands to knock the ball away from Darlington Nagbe, but no foul was called. Instead, Allen sent an inch-perfect 30-yard rolling pass into the path of David Villa, who calmly shot the ball past Gleeson for his eighth goal of the season.
