As camp begins, the team is starting to take shape. Still, many questions remain about the roster and who will be a contributor this year. Here are five of the biggest questions coming into the season.

1. Can the defense begin to rebound?

The Devils have until 3 p.m. today to set their 23-man opening day roster. There's definitely some interesting choices to be made, although not a lot of them. I'll lay out who has likely made the team, who's on the bubble and who's likely headed to the AHL, or possibly back to juniors.

Made the 23

Forwards (13): Travis Zajac, Ilya Kovalchuk, Dainius Zubrus, David Clarkson, Jacob Josefson, Adam Henrique (IR) Bobby Butler, Cam Janssen, Krys Barch, Mattias Tedenby, Steve Bernier, Stephen Gionta, Ryan Carter (APOLOGIES! Just realized I obviously left Patrik Elias off this list.)Defensemen (7): Bryce Salvador, Marek Zidlicky, Anton Volchenkov, Andy Greene, Mark Fayne, Henrik Tallinder, Peter Harrold

Yes folks, Ilya Kovalchuk is not only back in the United States, he's in New Jersey and has arrived at the Prudential Center! Rejoice! Let the angels sing!

? Rich Chere (@Ledger_NJDevils) January 16, 2013Earlier Wednesday, Lou Lamoriello told Tom Gulitti of The Record that Kovy would be at the 2 p.m. practice/scrimmage with AHL Albany. It wasn't clear if he'd participate in the scrimmage.

The Devils will look to mine offense from secondary sources this year. As we discussed yesterday, David Clarkson will be part of the equation, but the Devils will need more than that to remain in playoff contention. For this, they'll have to look a little deeper and if you've been paying attention through the first few days of camp, you'll have noticed a trend: Bobby Butler playing in key situations.

Via Tom Gulitti of The Record:

Through the first three days of camp, he?s been skating on a line with first-line center Travis Zajac and today he practiced on the first power-play unit.

The Devils haven't named a captain to replace Zach Parise yet and the season is only a few days away. Defenseman Bryce Salvador is considered a heavy favorite, but Pete DeBoer on Tuesday threw an interesting name into the ring (given recent events, that is):

While it may seem curious to mention, Kovy was an assistant captain last season and it would be stupid to completely avoid the notion that one of two assistant captains could be promoted the next season. Kovalchuk is the Devils' best player (yes, including Marty) and it's not even close. While that doesn't always mean a "C," it does carry weight. That said, DeBoer was probably just mentioning this out of respect for Kovy. I'd expect him to remain an assistant this season and for someone else to get the "C." Kovalchuk is expected to rejoin the team Wednesday and could participate in the Devils' scrimmage against AHL affiliate Albany. You can bet your house this will be one of many interesting questions he has to answer tomorrow.

You know the hit. Steve Bernier hit Rob Scuderi from behind, sending the Kings defenseman careening head-first into the boards. You know the result, too. Bernier got a five-minute major, the Kings scored three times and Game 6 was all but decided. Bernier felt terrible enough about the hit that he had difficulty sleeping.

Via Rich Chere of The Ledger:

?For sure I lost sleep. It was very tough,? Bernier recalled. ?Not only is it my dream to win the Stanley Cup. It?s my teammates? dream, the fans? dream, my family?s dream. We were so close. And to have that weight of the hit after which they scored three goals on the power play is not fun.

?I?d do it differently if I had a chance, but I don?t have that chance.?

In a move that is utterly brilliant and makes me feel incredibly old, Stefan Matteau is lockering next to Martin Brodeur in training camp this year. Tom Gulitti of The Record spoke to Matteau (yes, he is the son of the infamous Stephane Matteau) about sitting next to Brodeur and what he can learn from him. READ

Jacob Josefson missed his second day of training camp Monday after sitting out two Albany Devils games with a lower-body injury. However, the Devils expect Josefson back on the ice Tuesday and all will be well again.

Via Tom Gulitti of The Record:

?I expect he will probably be on the ice tomorrow,? DeBoer said.

Lou Lamoriello and Pete DeBoer gave a basic rundown of what to expect from training camp, so I figured I would give it to you in note form:

  1. Lou says the Devils expect to bring 25 to 28 players to camp with them, consisting of two goalies, eight defensemen and five to six forward lines. The goalies and defenseman are pretty self-explanatory, but it'll be interesting to see which Albany players get the call.
  2. Lou didn't reveal whether any of the team's junior prospects would get a call for camp. As a note, in the shortened season the NHL has shortened the amount of NHL games a junior player can play in from 10 to six. That means after six games the NHL club must either keep said player or return him to his junior club.
  3. The team will put the players through physicals Sunday and then the team will hold their first official team practice on the same day.
  4. The players have been using the team's facilities during this informal "warmup" period before camps open with the permission of the league and the Devils.
  5. Camp will be held at the Prudential Center, as it usually is.
