SYOSSET, N.Y. -- About an hour after the first group of Islanders hit the ice for training camp, the second group was out there for spin at IceWorks.

The second group was highlighted by Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo, Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolay Kulemin, Ryan Strome, Kirill Petrov, Ryan Pulock and Nick Leddy. One of the more intriguing items from the second groups skate was the all Russian line (Petrov-Grabovski-Kulemin).

Today is the last day before the Giants report to their 2015 training camp out at QDTC. It's a good thing, too, because today is supposed to be the hottest day of the summer. The forecast for the rest of the week is calling for hot temps, but not like today.

The Rangers sent through the following quotes following their win over Chicago:

Alain Vigneault on making roster decisions??There?s a couple areas that there?s not much separation. There are a lot of things that need to be considered, the cap, the health, what we?re going to do with Step (Derek Stepan), as far as long term or not long term. There are a lot thing that are coming into the mix. Still not quite sure, after sitting through the game with Glen, exactly where we are with the pieces.?

Ryan Malone on his play??You obviously want to be noticed in a positive way, so you want to make sure you?re doing stuff, even in practice, doing the little things and have the eyes on you as much as you can. There?s still another game tomorrow, so you have to keep going and take it one day at a time.?

Third Period:

Adam's Thoughts:

  • For the most part I have almost discounted Chris Mueller as an option to make the Rangers but the more he plays the more I think he may have a shot to be the 13th forward or maybe take the 3/4th line role until Derek Stepan returns and puts everyone back in order. He is a good passer, pretty good on faceoffs, and has some nice skill. He might be the player who has gotten the best opportunity with Matthew Lombardi being out.
  • You can see the difference in the young players last night vs tonight. Most of them at least had some moments tonight but against more of an NHL team they struggled. Anthony Duclair was started quiet but had a strong third period and continues to make a case to stick around.
  • Conor Allen has that little edge to him that is nice to see but I think it might be a mistake to keep him as the 7th D. Allen is a bit older but still only has one-year as a pro. He would probably be best playing top minutes in Hartford and looking for a spot next season.

10:30PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

  • Alain Vigneault on the remainder of the preseason??I think both teams right now are playing young players, and they?re trying to get a read on their young players. Everybody?s gonna try to make the best decisions that they can, but then the puck drops on October eighth, teams are going to have their veteran lineups on the ice. There?s still some time from now till then to decide what we?re gonna do. The other teams are gonna do what they feel is best for themselves.?
  • Ryan Haggerty on playing his first game at MSG??It was an unbelievable experience. Obviously it?s something you?re never going to forget, even if it?s a preseason game. Growing up in Stamford, being so close and being a Ranger fan, being able to come out and play my first game in a blue sweater is unbelievable.?
  • Anthony Duclair on playing with the Rangers??I?m just gaining confidence every day. The veteran guys here are really helping the young guys get comfortable; it makes a difference at the end of the day.?
  • Ryan McDonagh on the young players having good games tonight??There?s some spots to be won here, and these guys know it, coach is saying it. Asking us everyday what they need to do to get better on the ice, and talking to us in practice about situations that happened in the game before. So that?s great, that?s what you want to see from a young player, you want them to try move and make a difference every time he?s out there.
9:28PM: First Period:
  • Anthony Duclair (2) Snap shot - ASST: Ryan Haggerty (1), Ryan McDonagh (1)

Adam's Thoughts:

  • ?Anthony Duclair certainly showed why there is hype around him. He may be one of those guys who is ready to play in the AHL but can't because the rules state he has another year to play in junior. I don't think he should/will make the Rangers but this was a really good first impression. I don't think there is enough ice time for him with the Rangers and the best situation would be for him to go to the AHL but instead he will get another year to dominate in the QMJHL, hopefully make Team Canada for the World Juniors and then play for the memorial cup.
  • JT Miller was good again and has probably tightened his grip on locking up a roster spot and likely filling in for Derek Stepan while he was out. The big game on faceoffs is very encouraging and nice to see.
  • I liked what Rick Nash showed tonight. He had good legs, went to the net, was engaged and looked a lot like the player the Rangers need him to be.
  • One thing that may work in Oscar Lindberg's favor, towards getting a spot on the roster, is his ability on the PK, especially with Derek Stepan out.

Alain Vigneault on J.T. Miller??I thought J.T. had some moments. I thought he was battling hard on the puck, making some real nice plays for a first exhibition game. It was a chance to see him in the middle. I thought he did some good things.?

J.T. Miller on his play tonight??I just tried to play normal hockey. You prepare yourself as much as you want for the camp and the season, but you still have to play. You have to go out and catch on a little bit.?

5:45:?Group A wrapped up today's practice at the Coliseum.

It was interesting to see veteran Kyle Okposo skating with Ryan Strome and Michael Dal Colle. Jaroslav Halak also trotted out his new mask for the upcoming year, so that was cool. One thing that was noticeable in group A, along with the rest of the players at camp, is the speed they have. Cory Conacher was a player whose speed stood out to me earlier, but as Tony Stabile of Hockey This Week pointed out most of the players are speedsters.

Travis Hamonic, who did not play where he wanted to last season, looked very focused on day two. It was easy to tell he wants to have better season this year.

Last year, in his first training camp with the Rangers, Alain Vigneault said that all the players had "clean slates" and the team designed shirts that said "clean slate...grab it" on the back.

Asked this week, Vigneault said that there is a clean slate in the sense that the roles players had last year and the lines players were on may not work this year.

Vigneault did say that knowing the players would help him figure things out sooner than he did last year.

Here's the latest on the "camp battles" raging on out at QDTC through the first preseason games...

Backup QB: Ryan Nassib has looked just OK. He's throwing the ball better than last season, that is for sure. He's a bit more poised, but he does not look as if he's going force the Giants to cut Curtis Painter. Painter is 10-10 passing this preseason with a nice corner fade for a TD to his credit. Painter looks like he's staying unless something drastic happens.

TE: Larry Donnell is the current starter and has held his own in practice and in games. Daniel Fells has a bruised knee and may miss another week, but he has performed well in his chances. Kellen Davis is an experienced blocker and short yardage receiver. A likely keeper. Adrien Robinson is on the roster bubble. He needs to step things up quickly here or face the Turk. Rookie Xavier Grimble (hamstring) could spend 2014 on IR.

On this off day, it's time to reflect on who had made an impression thus far at Giants' camp and who has not. ?Yes, there is still a long way to go until first cuts (from 90 to 75 by August 26, and then to 53 by August 31), but it's never too early to take the team's temperature. ?The five preseason games will reveal a lot, too, but for now let's cover what's been going on...

"Good Vibrations," the song I have traditionally started my summer off to for the past 47 years. Some of the players have given off those good vibrations in camp this summer are rookie LB Devon Kennard, TE Larry Donnell and CB Walter Thurmond III.
