Catching you up on the Giants' offseason moves thus far:

  • February 11 - Waived RB David Wilson, who missed the entire 2014 NFL season with a neck injury. The club will reportedly save $1.3 million in cap space by waiving their former first round pick.
  • February 11 - Signed OL Brett Jones, a free agent from the Canadian Football League to a three-year contract (2015: $435,000 2016: $525,000 2017: $615,000). No portion of Jones' contract is guaranteed.
  • February 17 - Re-signed WR Kevin Ogletree to a one-year, $825K contract. Ogletree, 28, caught five passes in seven games after being signed by the Giants last October.
  • February 19 - Re-signed OL Dallas Reynolds to a one-year, $700K contract. Reynolds was a restricted free agent this offseason.
  • Feburary 24 - Waived DE Mathias Kiwanuka, a nine-year veteran with the team. The move frees up $4.825 million in cap space for the Giants.
Sometimes it's the little moves that add up to a championship formula. The release of Wilson was simply a formality. Wilson essentially retired from football after doctors advised him to never strap on the pads again last spring.

The Jones signing is nothing more than a risk-free one with them hoping to add a quality player at a bargain price. Jones was the CFL's top lineman in 2014. Reynolds' deal is pretty much the same. With JD Walton probably sent packing, $700k is a bargain for Reynolds' experience with the new offense and his versatility.

The Mets released nine players, including Chris Schwinden, from minor league camp on Monday. Schwinden is the only one of this group who has played in the big leagues.

He's allowed 460 hits, and 324 K/131 BB. Oh, and in the big leagues, he's had a 55+ ERA, 6.98 ERA in 29.2 innings with 38 hits allowed.

2.?Joe Bonfe - Bonfe turned 26 in December after hitting .245/.301/.309 in 44 games for Binghamton in 2013 while mostly playing first base and leftfield.

One day after releasing WR Keith Carlos, the Giants have worked quickly to fill the spot on the 90-man roster by inking free agent Terrell Sinkfield today.

Beautiful day here. Nice breeze. Great work day. The defense was pretty good today. They did a nice job. It got better today.

Q: A lot of the younger guys had a bunch of interceptions today. How much does that tell you about what they?re doing and how much does that help their confidence?A: They were in the right spot and they made a nice play and hopefully we can grow with that, we can get better because of that. It?s a good thing to see the people make plays.

Q: Can you teach ball-hawking skills? Or do they have to be more instinctive?A: It?s both. You can teach them where to be and how to play it and what position they should be in and where their eyes ought to be. And then, of course, there?s some individual ability involved, but yes. You can definitely teach the whole thing probably except for catching the ball, which we can work at that, too. Being in the right spot, the eyes, the quarterback? Where is your leverage coming from? Where is your help coming from? When do your eyes go to the ball? If they do go to the ball and you?re in man coverage, how do you handle that when the receiver is looking for the ball or which shoulder you?re going to work with? So all of that stuff is taught.

Yesterday, the Mets took one more step in their roster churn from last week, trading Collin Cowgill, who had already been designated for assignment, to the Angels for minor league outfielder Kyle Johnson. The Mets had already used Cowgill's space on the 40-man roster to add Eric Young Jr.

Last winter, the Mets brought Collin Cowgill as a potential platoon piece in the outfield, who could play center field. He did show a platoon split - hitting lefties better than righties, but did not hit anyone well enough to keep his place on the Mets' forty-man roster. Marte, by the way, has hit .254/.368/.337 with 14 walks, 25 strikeouts and no homeruns in 25 games for the for the A's AA Midland team. However, the 22-year-old has been hobbled since May 3 by a strained calf that has limited to just an inning an a half in the last two months.

Johnson, a right-handed hitting outfielder was hitting .308/.416/.421 in 68 games for the Burlington Bees in the Midwest League (the same level as Savannah). He had 16 doubles, 39 walks and was 30-for-35 stealing bases. The 23-year-old was 8th in the MWL in batting average, and fourth in on-base percentage and stolen bases. He can certainly help the Savannah Sand Gnats, who are dead least in the SAL in stolen bases specifically and who could use the offensive help more generally following the promotion of Jayce Boyd and Kevin Plawecki to advanced-A St. Lucie. Johnson has mostly played right field, but has manned centerfield eight times.

RHP Noah Syndergaard, a key piece of the Mets' trade with the Blue Jays for R.A. Dickey has been promoted from advanced-A St. Lucie to AA Binghamton. Thor as we like to call him around here leaves the Florida State League 3-3 with a 3.11 ERA, the 9th-best ERA in the League. His strikeout rate of 24.8% was second in the FSL and his 6.2 % walk rate is very solid.

Syndergaard, who will not turn 21 until the end of August, is listed at 6'5", 200lbs, although I think he's closer to 6'6". He throws hard - in the mid 90s, which has downward plane that has helped him to the sixth-best groundball rate in the FSL among pitchers with 50+ innings (52%). and has a curve, slider and changeup. I was told this week that he was again using his curveball as his primary breaking pitch. When it's good, it has a short, tight break.

He is a very good young pitching prospect. Syndergaard is extremely unlikely to make his big league debut in 2013, but with continued development and success in AA and AAA, June/July 2014 just as Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey did before him in 2012 and 2013 is very much in play.

The Giants have announced the signing of wide receiver Keith Carlos.

The 6-foot, 200 lbs Carlos played two years at Purdue, first as a wide receiver and later as a running back. He was briefly with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011, but has no professional playing experience.

The team had a roster opening after waiving RB Jeremy Wright on Friday.

The Giants made some roster moves today. They signed LB Kyle Bosworth, nephew of Brian, and TE Chase Clement, who missed rookie mini camp allegedly due to a failed physical.

From Art Stapleton of the Bergen Record:

Clement was expected to sign with the Giants as an undrafted free agent and participate in rookie mini-camp earlier this month. But when the roster was finalized, he wasn?t on it. Now apparently he will be as Clement tweeted a photo with an accompanying message that suggested he was signing with the Giants.

As for Bosworth, in case you?re wondering, yes, he is the nephew of the Boz, Brian Bosworth, and the fiance of Real Housewives of Orange County star Kara Keough, whose family was previously featured on the Bravo hit reality series for several seasons. Her mother, Jeana, was an original RH of OC cast member; her father is one-time Yankees pitcher Matt Keough.

Rookie camp came to an end with the Giants making several roster moves. Added were LB Aaron Curry, DT Frank Okam, TE Michael Palmer, WR Jeremy Horne, DB John Stevenson and CB Junior Mertile.

Curry is the team's newest reclamation project, a "low-risk" move the team hopes will reap major benefits. He will be tried at all three LB positions in camp.

The 27 year-old Okam was a former fifth round selection of the Texans, who has also spent time in Tampa. He is a long shot to make the roster.

The official transactions we discussed earlier.

  • LHP Adam Kolarek transferred from Binghamton (AA) to Las Vegas (AAA)
  • RHP Cory Mazzoni placed on disabled list (right elbow neuritis), retroactive to April 11
  • RHP Luis Mateo transferred from St. Lucie (High-A) to Binghamton (AA)
  • LHP Shawn Teufel transferred from Extended Spring Training to Binghamton (AA)

"Elbow neuritis" is a fancy word for nerve inflammation, or tennis elbow. The treatments and severity of the injury can vary widely.

I heard this Sunday night, and Adam Rubin confirms on Monday morning:

Luis Mateo will get a spot start with Double-A Binghamton tonight before returning to Class A St. Lucie. Mateo will sub for Cory Mazzoni, who will miss a start with arm soreness.
There's a whole lot of interesting stuff here.

  • The nebulous nature of "arm soreness" on Mazzoni. It's as vague as it gets. However, things like this are why I do not think the slightly built (by professional pitcher standards) Mazzoni can make it through a full season as a starter and why I dropped him in my rankings from #10 last year to #19 this year.
  • The surprise here is that the Mets are going to move Mateo up, after ONE START in advanced-A for what is being billed as a "spot start."
  • Usually when faced with a need for a spot starter, a minor league team will first pull from their own bullpen or if that is not an option, grab a guy who is less of a prospect from a lower level.
  • The bullpen is not a viable option for Binghamton because that group threw 13.2 innings in the last three games as no starter made it past the fifth inning. Every member of the pen has pitched in the last three days at least once and everyone except Adrian Rosario, has thrown twice in the last four days. Moreover, the B-Mets do not have an off-day until next Thursday, so with games in each of the next 10 days, the team does not really have arms to burn in the 'pen. Sure, the Mets could have promoted Angel Cuan, who instead started for St. Lucie on Sunday to take the start, but there's little question that Mateo has a much better arm and resides in a different prospect class.
  • ?The Mets skipped Mateo over Savannah and he was dominant in his first start with St. Lucie (6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K) while drawing rave reviews from Pitching Coach Phil Regan. Pitching Coaches often give their pupils positive press, but coming into the year, Mateo's fastball (which has plus velo and can touch 95) and slider were enough to put him in my and others Top 20 Mets Prospects, but Regan sang the praises of Mateo's changeup.
  • And sure, if Mateo is successful in AA, there's no reason to send him back to advanced-A ...
  • There's a developing phenomenon where the Mets are more aggressive with their pitcher assignments than their position players. For example, the team started Michael Fulmer in advanced-A Savannah in 2012, but held Brandon Nimmo from his draft class back to 2013 and Gavin Cecchini a year later, back in extended this year. Once a pitcher is dominating and has made 10 -12 starts at a level in a-ball - he's gone. Examples include: Matt Harvey, Rafael Montero, Mazzoni, Tyler Pill, Logan Verrett and Jacob deGrom. ?Again, Mateo has made ONE a-ball start.

He's been mentioned as someone to keep an eye on this summer in the defensive end rotation with Osi Umenyiora on his way out. Cordle appeared in all 16 games, playing mainly on special teams.
The Giants earlier re-signed DE Justin Trattou, also an ERFA. The team has several RFAs remaining they must either sign, tender or release the next few days: WR Victor Cruz, S Stevie Brown, RB Andre Brown and RB Ryan Torain.

Buehler, who turned 26 last week, was with the Dallas Cowboys from 2009-2011. He handled kickoff duties throughout the first two of those seasons and in four games in 2011. In three years, Buehler had 60 touchbacks on 175 kickoffs, a 34.3 percentage. He led the NFL with 29 touchbacks (on 76 kickoffs) as a rookie in 2009.

It's that time of year. The time when teams have begun making their offseason "evaluations" by shedding their rosters of ?high-paid veterans. ?The Giants have perhaps made the biggest splash by releasing RB Ahmad Bradshaw, LB Michael Boley and DT Chris Canty.

So how will they replace these veterans?

First off, there's no replacing Bradshaw. He is one of the toughest runners in all of football. That is, when he's healthy. Unfortunately, Bradshaw has not been healthy lately and, as we speak, he's recovering from another surgical procedure on his foot.

As we all know, Victor Cruz is a restricted free agent this offseason. If the Giants sign him to a first round restricted tender, they pay him $2.9 million if he doesn't sign with another team (and they don't match the offer). Cruz faces an interesting choice this offseason.

As you probably have heard by now, the Giants have released three veteran players over the past 24 hours. LB Michael Boley yesterday and DT Chris Canty and RB Ahmad Bradshaw this afternoon.

These are just some of the tough decisions the Giants are faced with this offseason. They have to get down under the cap (approx $121 million) by March 12th and have to pay up some of their players approaching their primes i.e. Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks.

Yes, it's a business and when you've been as successful as the Giants have been the past few seasons, there is never going to be enough money to pay everyone. The team just cleared out about $14 million in cap space with the cuts so that will help. But they will miss the integrity and leadership these players have provided the past few seasons.

According to several sources, the Giants plan to fill Andre Brown's roster spot with veteran RB Kregg Lumpkin.

From Ebenezer Samuel of the Daily News:

It's unknown how the Giants will use Lumpkin, but the 5-11, 228-pounder, who spent last season with the Tampa Bay Bucs and began this season in Seattle, instantly becomes the biggest tailback on the roster, so he may get some goal line touches, and he caught 41 passes last season, proving to be a solid receiver.....Perhaps more importantly, Lumpkin can fill Brown's role on the Giants' special teams coverage units; he played specials with the Bucs last season and made seven tackles.
The team needed a bigger back than Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson, who are both 5'10" and under 215 lbs (Wilson is 205). This signing should not impact the plan to get the rookie Wilson more touches.
