Need To Know: Huskies quarterback Bryant Shirreffs threw for 202 yards on 12 of 19 passing, finding the end zone twice in the process. Despite throwing an interception, the North Carolina State transfer did his part in helping UConn and second-year coach Bob Diaco pick up a week one victory.
The Huskies took an early lead after Shirreffs hit tight end Tommy Myers for a 14-yard score, but Villanova, the No. 4-ranked team in the FCS, would own a 9-6 advantage at the break.
A one-yard rushing TD by Ron Johnson coupled with Arkeel Newsome’s 27-yard receiving score game the home team a bit of breathing room in the second half, but the Wildcats would not go away. A ‘Nova score with less than two minutes remaining pulled the Wildcats to within five, but that was as close as they’d come down the stretch.
Despite Villanova’s strong effort, Bob Diaco’s squad was able to begin the season with a ‘W,’ topping the FCS power, 20-15.
