Shirreffs took all the first-team snaps in Thursday's scrimmage at Pratt and Whitney Stadium. According to unofficial stats kept by New Haven Register reporter Jim Fuller, Shirreffs was 12-for-17 for 128 yards and two touchdowns playing against the second-team defense.
Coach Bob Diaco told reporters he won't name a starting QB until the week of the Villanova game. But when asked if he's ready to do so, he said, "I am, but I'm not going to."
Led by Shirreffs, a transfer from North Carolina State, the offense looked much better than it did in last Saturday's scrimmage against the first-team defense. Arkeel Newsome ran nine times for 56 yards and two touchdowns and Noel Thomas caught six passes for 71 yards, according to Fuller.
Dhameer Bradley, the most-targeted receiver last Saturday, was held out Thursday for undisclosed reasons. Diaco said it was a "day-to-day, ticky-tack" thing.
Tim Boyle quarterbacked the second team and was 8-for-15 for 76 yards with two TDs and an interception.
