What: The first game of the 2015 college football season for both teams
Where: Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.
When: 7:30 p.m. (with UConn Football Pre-Game beginning on SNY at 7 p.m.)
Thursday’s game will be the 14th meeting between UConn and Villanova, but the first since 1999. Villanova leads the series 9-4, with 12 of the games being played between 1987 and ’99, when both teams were members of the Yankee Conference and Atlantic 10 football.
UConn is 9-4 in season openers since making the jump to then-Division I-A in 2002.
Bryant Sherriffs, a transfer from North Carolina State, will start at quarterback. Sherriffs, a redshirt sophomore from Georgia, was widely expected to get the start over Tim Boyle following recent scrimmages.
UConn coach Bob Diaco has different expectations for the upcoming season than those who picked his Huskies to finish at the bottom of the American Athletic Conference in the league’s annual media poll.
“We’re going to win every game,” Diaco said at the conference’s media day earlier this month. “We’re going to play as one of the four teams in the playoffs and win the national championship.”
The Huskies finished 2-10 during their first year under the former Notre Dame defensive coordinator.
