Headlined by the No. 1 overall prospect in the cycle, the UConn women's basketball team signed five members for the Huskies' 2020 recruiting class Wednesday.
UConn announced letters of intent from Minnetonka (Minn.) Hopkins five-star point guard Paige Bueckers (No. 1 overall, No. 1 point guard), Baltimore Roland Park Country five-star wing Mir McLean (No. 21 overall, No. 3 wing), Ontario (Canada) Crestwood Secondary five-star wing Aaliyah Edwards (No. 26 overall, No. 4 wing), Haverhill (Mass.) Bradford Christian Academy three-star forward Piath Gabriel and Zagreb, Croatia, three-star point guard Nika Muhl.
Prospect rankings are from the 2020 HoopGurlz espnW 100 recruiting rankings, prepared by Dan Olson of Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
"I think we've got a good mix of inside, outside, middle," said head coach Geno Auriemma. "When you look at our team now, we're young in some ways. We're inexperienced in some ways. We don't have the kind of size that we've had in the past. Even though we're going to be young next year, I think the depth and the experience that we have this year plus the youth next year. I like how we've been able to package a lot of different things into five different players. Not one of them is remotely like the other one, and that's a really neat thing."
Bueckers, who committed April 1 to UConn and chose the Huskies over offers from top suitors like Maryland and Notre Dame, averaged 24.4 points, 5.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 steals per game as she fueled her high school team's 32-0 record and 2018-19 state title.
"The thing that is impressive to me about Paige is how unselfish she is and her ability to get everyone involved in the game and her knack of getting to the basket," Auriemma said. "She's going to add, to us, a bigger guard that can impact the game, whether she's shooting it or passing it. It's important for us to get kids that are talented and unselfish and can score, and Paige has been able to do all those things."
