The University of Connecticut women's basketball team has an opponent for the Maggie Dixon Classic and it's a program the Huskies have become familiar with in recent seasons.
The Huskies will take on 2015 Big Ten champion and Final Four semifinalist Maryland in the annual Maggie Dixon Classic on Dec. 28 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Game time is 8:30 p.m. and the contest will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
The matchup is part of a three-game deal between the schools. UConn will travel to Maryland in 2016-17 while the Terrapins will play at UConn during the 2017-18 season.
The game also rounds out UConn's 11-game non-league schedule.
It will be the third straight season and the fifth time overall the Huskies have been involved in the Maggie Dixon Classic. UConn is 6-0 at the Garden with wins over Penn State, Ohio State, California, and St. John's in the Maggie Dixon Classic as well as a pair of regular season wins over St. John’s (2007, 2011).
The event played annually at MSG honors the memory of Maggie Dixon, the Army women's basketball coach, who died on April 6, 2006, from an undiagnosed heart condition. She was 29. In her only season at Army, she led her team to its first NCAA tournament appearance.
It will also be UConn's fifth meeting with Maryland since the start of the 2012-13 season. The Huskies lead the series 4-0, including an 81-58 Final Four semifinal win in Tampa on April 5. UConn would go on to win its 10th national championship two days later.
The home-and-home series sets up homecoming games for players from both teams. UConn freshman forward De'Janae Boykin is from Springdale, Maryland, while Maryland freshman forward Kiah Gillespie is from Meriden, Connecticut.
