The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team will make its fourth appearance in the Maggie Dixon Classic in January.
The defending national champion Huskies will take on St. John’s in the ninth annual event on Jan. 4 at Madison Square Garden.
UConn is 5-0 at the Garden with wins over Penn State (2008), Ohio State (2010), and California (2013) in the Maggie Dixon Classic as well as a pair of regular season wins over St. John’s (2007, 2011).
UConn coach Geno Auriemma said last month he was thrilled to be bringing his team back to New York City.
“It’s the Garden,” Auriemma said. “If we could play a game at the Garden every year it would be unbelievable. It’s New York. The kids love it. The fans love it. It’s a win-win for everyone. I’ve loved it at the Garden since the first time I set foot in the building.”
Garden officials are working to find a second game, the Associated Press reported. The previous eight classics have been a doubleheader.
The Maggie Dixon Classic is held annually in memory of the Army women’s basketball coach, who died on April 6, 2006, from an undiagnosed heart condition. She was 29. In her only season at Army, she led her team to its first NCAA tournament appearance.
UConn’s non-league schedule is expected to be released soon. It will include home games with Creighton, DePaul, Duke, and South Carolina, a game against UCLA at Mohegan Sun Arena, three games in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Naples, Fla., and road games with UC Davis, Stanford, Notre Dame, and St. John’s at the Garden.
