UMass redshirt sophomore guard Derrick Gordon has made history by coming out as the first openly gay male college basketball player.

Gordon, a Plainfield, N.J., native whose time?at St. Patrick High School in New Jersey alongside?NBA players?Kyrie Irving and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was documented in the film "Prayer For a Perfect Season," made the landmark announcement on ESPN and in an ESPNW story.

"I was thinking about summer plans and just being around my teammates and how it was going to be," Gordon told ESPNW. "I just thought, 'Why not now? Why not do it in the offseason when it's the perfect time to let my teammates know and everybody know my sexuality."

NEW YORK - UMass, which has not been to an NCAA Tournament since 1998, was right there on Saturday afternoon in a 71-62 Atlantic 10 semifinal loss to Virginia Commonwealth.

Trailing the entire second half, the Minutemen hung tough, chipped away at a deficit that reached as many as 10 and had opportunities to at least tie the game, but in the end, they will wake up Sunday morning at the mercy of the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

Just a few days after landing Western Kentucky transfer Derrick Gordon, UMass coach Derek Kellogg landed a commitment from 7-foot-2, 215-pound?Isaac Freeman of South Kent (Conn.).

Freeman, who?averaged 14.7 points, 14.5 rebounds, and 7.5 blocks last season at Osbourn High (Va.), before transferring to South Kent,?chose UMass over DePaul, Drexel and UCF.

"What made me choose UMass is their style of basketball," he said by text. "They are uptempo with the game and run the floor very well. I loved their campus and I immediately could see myself going to school there and being part of their basketball program.

The 6-foot-2 former Western Kentucky guard Tweeted Friday that he picked UMass over St. Joe's and Rhode Island.

The former St. Patrick standout averaged 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds. He must sit a year per NCAA transfer regulations.

As he comes to the Prudential Center Monday night for a?nonconference game with Bobby Gonzalez and Seton Hall, UMass coach Derek Kellogg is very high on two Pirates whom he recruited while an assistant to John Calipari at Memphis.

Kellogg recruited Seton Hall forward Herb Pope out of high school, but Pope ultimately landed at New Mexico State before transferring to the Big East school.?

Kellogg?also successfully recruited Jeff Robinson out of Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick to Memphis.

J.J. Moore, the 6-foot-5 wing out of South Kent (Conn.), is down to four schools, according to his AAU coach, Gary Charles.

St. John's, Pittsburgh, Louisville and Florida are the Final Four for Moore, an athletic wing who lives in Brentwood, N.Y.

Moore will tentatively visit Louisville Oct. 16 and Florida Oct. 23. He has already taken unofficials to St. John's and Pittsburgh.

Both Sidiki Johnson, a 6-8 sophomore from St. Raymond's in the Bronx, and Angel Nunez, a 6-8 wing who could be headed to the Winchendon (Mass.) School, hold offers from Arizona and like the Pac-10 school very much.

Terrell Vinson, a 6-7, 205-pound power forward from Baltimore St. Frances, committed to UMass during a home visit Monday night with head coach Derek Kellogg.

"Yes, sir. Last night on the home visit," said James Gilyard, Vinson's stepfather.

Vinson led St. Frances to the Baltimore Catholic League and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association titles. He averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Memphis sophomore guard Jeff Robinson is strongly considering transferring during or after this year, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Robinson is unhappy with his playing time and is considering Seton Hall, Rutgers, UMass, Xavier, St. Joe's and Miami. He would have two years of eligibility remaining if he leaves after the season and two-and-a-half if he transfers in December.

"I know that he hasn't made up his mind yet [about where to go to]," the source said. "The final decision has not been made."

In a battle between two of the elite prep programs in the nation, The Patterson (N.C.) School downed Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy, 79-76, Sunday at the DTLR National High School Hoops Festival in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Hargrave had been No. 1 in the Preseason National Prep Poll, while Patterson was No. 3. The loss snapped a 37-game winning streak for Hargrave.

"I would think we would be No. 1," said Patterson coach Chris Chaney, whose team is now 16-0.

The 6-foot-2 Council is averaging 13 points and 10 assists for Patterson, ranked No. 3 in the National Prep Poll behind No. 1 Hargrave Military and No. 2 Brewster. Hargrave and Patterson will square off on Sunday in Maryland.

"[Council] has a very high basketball IQ," Chaney said. "He really knows how to play. He's a tough kid. He makes he right plays during the game. He's one of those guys you can count on. He's a quarterback who makes the right plays."

Tevin Baskin was slated to visit UMass last weekend and Providence this weekend, but now he says he's "wide open" and "re-opening" his recruitment.

"I decided to open back up my recruitment," said the 6-foot-7 senior forward from Trinity (Conn.) Catholic. "I may end up commiting to a school in April if something doesn't grab my attention during the season."

Baskin said he decided to open things up again (even though he hadn't committed) after speaking last week with his parents.

It's a two-horse race for Torrington (Conn.) big man Jordan Williams.

The 6-foot-10, 245-pound Williams is expected to decide between Maryland and St. John's within the next week or so, according to Torrington head coach Tony Turina.

"He's been at St. John's and he was also at Maryland," Turina said. "Both visits were great. He's got a difficult choice. He came away impressed with both schools. I would say they're both neck-and-neck. He's narrowed his choices down to those two schools. Within the next week to 10 days, he should be making a commitment one way or the other."

Freddie Riley, a 6-foot-6, 180-pound shooting guard from Chatham (VA) Hargrave Military Academy, committed to UMass Saturday after developing a strong relationship with first-year coach Derek Kellogg.

A native of Ocala, Fla., Riley also considered Baylor, South Florida and Marquette.

"I committed because of the relationship with the coach that I developed," Riley said. "He was at all my games over the summer, all my AAU games, recruiting me and everything. Once he started calling me and everything, we developed a real good relationship.

Freddie Riley, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound shooting guard from Chatham (VA) Hargrave Military Academy, has UMass at the top of his list but is also considering South Florida, Virginia Commonwealth and Baylor.

"He had a very good visit to UMass" the weekend of Sept. 12, Hargrave coach Kevin Keatts said. "Obviously, I think they're at the top of his list. He's going to take a visit to South Florida (Oct. 4) and he may take a visit to VCU this weekend. He may also take a visit to Baylor which has not been set."

Riley, a native of Ocala, Fla., is a scoring guard who would add automatic offense to whichever school he picks.
