It also allows him to compete against players a year older, such as Duke freshmen Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow and Arizona freshman Stanley Johnson.

"It's great not just because of the physical aspect but they've been here [with USA Basketball] twice," the 6-foot-1 Brunson out of Lincolnshire (IL) Adlai Stevenson told SNY.tv by phone from Colorado Springs. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Bob McKillop and his staff made their final two cuts from the USA U18 team after a scrimmage Monday night and the last two players to go were Brooklyn's Lance Stephenson and Memphis commit Wesley Witherspoon.

Although Stephenson may have been the most talented player among the 18 invited to try out, McKillop had had concerns about his attitude toward his teammates throughout the tryouts. Read my story here from last week.

"What I'm really happy about is how hard he competes," the coach told me. "Usually someone that has been given that amount of attention he has had, they don't have that sense of accountability in terms of competitiveness, and he really competes. He gets discouraged when a play doesn't go the right way, either by himself or by a teammate. And he needs to transcend the play and go on to the next play."

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lance Stephenson may be the most talented player at the USA U18 National Team Trials, but he is also the most enigmatic.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound?Stephenson has mixed brilliant play, especially on the offensive end, with scowls, flashes of?frustration and behavior that is viewed by the coaches as antithetical to the team concept.

On one occasion during the trials at the Verizon Center, head coach Bob McKillop pulled Stephenson aside in the middle of a scrimmage -- in full view of players, coaches and the media -- and whispered firmly into his ear. On another, McKillop unloaded a series of expletives in Stephenson's face after he hissed at one of his teammates during a drill.
