Mets infielder Brett Baty said it's definitely been "gratifying" to be performing well at the major league level. His solo home run in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winner, a "huge" hit for the team. Starter Kodai Senga sensed it would be low scoring game and was determined to keep the Pirates off the board. Senga escaped trouble throughout, crediting catcher Francisco Alvarez with a good gameplan. Though Pittsburgh would eventually tie the game, Senga was impressed with Baty's long ball and his overall transformation at the plate.

For Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, the difference in Baty's game is pretty simple: "confidence." He indicated that it takes some young players longer than others and Baty now knows he belongs in the big leagues. Mendoza also commented on how "impressive" starter Kodai Senga was, striking out seven using his "unbelievable forkball."

Yankees

When Yankees first baseman Ben Rice said hitting can definitely be "contagious," he wasn't kidding. The offense exploded for 10 runs in the seventh inning as they turned a one-run game into a 12-3 rout of San Diego. Austin Wells belted a grand slam and had five RBI, Rice had a pair of hits and two RBI. Starter Clarke Schmidt allowed just two runs over six innings and got to talk a little smack with former teammate Michael King after the Yankees win.

Boone lamented the fateful eighth inning when Tampa mustered a two-run rally to take the lead saying their hits "had eyes." Starter Ryan Yarbrough pitched into the fifth  inning allowing just one hit but walking three batters which he said "was not the start I was looking for."

Max Fried tossed seven innings of one-hit ball and Paul Goldschmidt provided all the offense the Yankees would need with a three-run homer as they shut out the Rays 3-0. Fried complimented batterymate Austin Wells for keeping him focused while Goldschmidt felt he began to rebound at the plate towards the end of last season and it has carried over to the Bronx.
