The Mets' offense started strong, scoring four runs in the opening frame thanks to a pair of two-run singles by A.J. Ewing and Brett Baty. Mark Vientos added a 445-foot solo home run in the fifth inning. M.J. Melendez was the hero of the night, driving in the Mets' final three runs. He hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and then launched a walk-off two-run home run in the 10th to give the Mets a 9-7 victory and the series-opening win.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cody Bellinger all expressed their admiration at closer David Bednar's toughness in closing out the Blue Jays just one day after a blown save against the Mets. The teams combined to hit five home runs between them but Bednar retiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to close out a 7-6 Yankees win proved to be the play of the game.
