With a minute to go in tonight's game at the Nassau Coliseum between the Islanders and Flyers, Casey Cizikas secured the win with an empty net goal. That put the Isles up 4-1 and afterwards the crowd erupted into chants of "we want playoffs" and, mockingly, "last place Flyers." The former came up loud and clear on the MSG+ broadcast of the game, even though the announced attendance was 13,888, which was far short of the Coliseum's capacity of 16,170.

SGI is sort of the Saskatchewan version of the Department of Motor Vehicles, as they process motor vehicle registrations and sell public car insurance. Back in the 80s, they enlisted the help of Clark Gillies and Bryan Trottier, both Saskatchewan natives, to make a series of safe driving commercials. And because everything makes it onto the internet eventually, well, here we are.

Two of the commercials feature the pair of Islanders checking a giant ice skating bear, which I guess is or was SGI's mascot. Somewhat inexplicably, the third ad takes place on a baseball field, so if you've ever wanted to see Clark Gillies play second base, here you go:

During the first period of tonight's game in Winnipeg, the Islanders continued to get scoring from their third line. David Ullstrom stole the puck from a Jets defender at the blueline and beat Al Montoya on the breakaway to make it 1-0.

Evgeni Nabokov tried out to be an umpire last night. (Screencap via NHL.com)The Islanders had a scoring frenzy last night, with seven goals in front of a stunned Air Canada Centre. Although I'm not sure how stunned, as they've seen things like this before. These are the Leafs who are what Forbes calls the most valuable franchise and have the highest operating income. Money doesn't always buy a better team and last night, against the less than rich Islanders, it didn't. Kind of amazing and it's almost hard to watch, if you're convinced your team could make much better use of the extra $50 million (or however much).

In Toronto, they've seen this all before. So much so that they're chanting for the hometown baseball team only three games into the season:

We're not sure exactly why this happened -- the Isles and Lightning aren't hardened rivals -- but today's game at the Coliseum opened with a pair of fights off the opening face off. Matt Martin fought B.J. Crombeen and Joe Finley fought Pierre-Cedric Labrie. For your viewing pleasure, per Keith Quinn:

This is the fun in a pre-season scrimmage; the Sound Tigers won 5-3 in regulation but by the time the shootout was all over, the Islanders had clawed their way back to win 6-5. It's all fun and wacky arithmetic when the game doesn't mean anything in the standings.

The funny thing about this particular game is you could tell a little bit about who was in game shape and who had extra motivation. The Sound Tigers for the most part had both of those things, as they're in the middle of the season and if you were on that roster, you didn't get a camp invite (save for the two junior invitees). One particular player who skated like a bat out of hell was Nino Niederreiter. Newsday found Nino after the game:

[sny-box color=E6F1FF]"Of course I was disappointed, but I've learned that there are things you cannot control and you can't worry about those," Niederreiter said after scoring a nifty goal for the Sound Tigers in the scrimmage with the Isles . "I promised myself I wouldn't get frustrated about those things this year. All I can control is what I do on the ice."[/sny-box]

The Islanders picked up the Hulk Joe Finley off waivers from Buffalo today, seriously increasing the size of the defense. Finley sounds like a stay at home, rough 'em up kind of d-man something that is new and rarley seen in Islander Country (hey, we haven't seen Carkner in a game yet). So that's the good news. The bad news is he's a former first rounder who has kicked around in the AHL and ECHL for around five years. He's something of a 6th or 7th defender on this team right now.

Finley will be on this team for the right now, too. The hometown paper of the Rochester Americans, where Finley was playing, seems to think that he'll have to be on the Islanders roster for at least 30 days.

[sny-box color=E6F1FF]Assuming this particular clause of the waiver rule did not change in the new CBA, I believe the Sabres still would have the first right to claim Finley back if the Islanders try to send him to Bridgeport of the AHL in the next 30 days. Finley?s arrival gives the Islanders nine defensemen in training camp.[/sny-box]

Earlier today at the World Juniors, Ville Pokka's Team Finland lit up Germany for eight unanswered goals. Pokka was a large part of it, notching two goals and a +5 rating in the game. You can skip ahead through the first couple minutes of the video below to find Pokka's goals. He's #12 with the visor.

In April 1984, the Islanders were in the middle of the Drive for Five looking for their fifth Stanley Cup in a row. One of the rookies on the team, along with Pat Flatley, was Pat LaFontaine. Here, LaFontaine is interviewed by Al Trautwig during an intermission of one of the games in their series against Montreal. The Islanders would beat Montreal in the conference finals before moving on to face Gretzky and the Oilers in the SCF for the second year in a row.

On Sunday afternoon, the Sound Tigers had a fight-filled game in Providence against the Bruins that included 10 fighting majors (even one from Ty Wishart) and 98 total penalty minutes between the two teams. The best fight in my opinion was Bridgeport's Brett Gallant against Lane McDermid in the second period.

As a tune up for the World Junior Championships, the Subway Super Series pits junior players from the CHL against their Russian counterparts. The Russians do a six-game tour of Canada, playing two games each against top players from the QMJHL, OHL and WHL.

Isles top prospect Ryan Strome is among the Canadian junior players named to the OHL squad, and he scored the first goal in last night's matchup in Sarnia, Ontario. Strome also assisted on the OHL's second goal, which is all they would need winning the game 2-1. Kids, this is why your coach tells you to follow the play.
