While much of the world gathers at Disney World, to eat, drink, negotiate over players, celebrate retirements, and try to schmooze their way into a new nugget of information or job, lets talk instead about guys still playing ball: those in the Caribbean Winter Leagues. It's been a slow week since we checked in last on this group.

2014 Mets- Wilmer Flores has played in three games in the last seven days, going 1-for-13. Overall, how's this for strikezone control: 5 walks and three strikeouts in nine games as part of a .333/.425/.364 batting line.

- Juan Lagares was 1-for-4 with a walk last Monday, and then flew to New York to have his knee examined. It turns out his issue was not serious and his prescription was to rest his knee for three weeks.

If you don't want to talk about Alabama-Auburn, check in instead on some of the Mets playing ball in Caribbean winter leagues.

2014 Mets- Newly arrived Wilmer Flores joined up with the Bravos de Margarita on November 27, and has a hit in each of his first six games during which time he's hit a crisp .500/.577/.550 with one double, four walks and one strikeout. It's six games and all, but four walks in six games is a nice start.

- Juan Lagares has lost 130 points of OPS in his last nine games, but is still hitting .345/.378/.418 with five doubles and one home run for Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican. Lagares drew one walk in his first 16 games and five walks in his last 11 games. He's managing the strike zone a little bit ?with a 16/6 K/BB overall in 27 games. ?He remains a hitter who is very reliant on contact and batting average on balls in play.

The Venezuelan Winter League began play yesterday. ?Who's playing down there? ?Remember rosters are very malleable, and foreign players who don't produce are often sent home.

The single most important name and player in Venezuela for the Mets for 2012 is clearly Johan Santana, who is currently on the roster of the Navegantes del Magallanes. ?(Update: except of course, Santana won't pitch in Venezuela and will be shut down for the rest of the off-season.) ?Also on the Magallenes roster: ?Manny Alvarez (AAA), Gabriel Zavala (A), ?Eduardo Aldama (SSA), and Carlos Gomez (GCL), ?illustrating nicely the uneven level of play in the league. Alvarez, who is on the 40-man roster, was placed on the double-A disabled list all the way back on May 2 with a right elbow strain, and did not appear in another game in 2011.

Wilmer Flores is the lone Met on Bravos de Margarita. ?He began his 2011 winter season by going 1-for-3 with a walk Wednesday.

Overall, Mets prospects have not fared well this Fall/Winter.? One of the few bright spots has been the stellar play of Wilmer Flores.? Flores had an early season calf injury that sidelined him for about 6 weeks, but has mashed his way to a line of .369/.397/.538 in 21 games for Los Bravos de Margarita of the VWL.? He also has driven in 15 runs while drawing 5 walks and striking out 9 times in 65 AB.

In an article (Spanish), by Leonard Ojeda, on the Bravos website, Flores talks about his returning from injury, his defense, and his personal outlook for 2011.

Wilmer Flores is finally healthy and showing his talents.? The Mets possible #1 overall prospect has returned, after being sidelined for 5 weeks with a calf injury,? to his winter league team (Los Bravos de Margarita) with a hot bat.? In the 10 games since returning, Flores is hitting .433/.438/.767 (13-30) with 4 doubles, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 1 BB, and 4 K.

Jose Rubicco Huertas writes a piece, on the Margaritas website, about the 19-year old Flores.? Here are some of the highlights of the article (which is in spanish):

Flores on returning from injury:

"I'm happy because I could return to play after injury at the start of the season. These things happen, but I feel fit, strong.? I spent two weeks up north doing rehab, no practice, nothing. Then I was sent to the Dominican Republic, played two weeks and now I am back to contribute. It's an experience that will help me with the mental part of the game and my defense. It will greatly help develop my career in the minor leagues."
Flores on whether or not the Mets have put any restrictions on his play while in Venezuela:
"I have no restrictions.? The Mets recommended that I work on my body in the gym, and to work on my foot speed."
Flores also spoke about the Mets plans for him in 2011:
"It depends on how I come to spring training.? If I am good shape, they (the Mets) told me I could go to AA."
Finally, Flores speaks directly about him staying at SS and his future:
"Many people say that I have to change, but I know I can play shortstop. I'm going to show them. Here is the case of Troy Tulowitzki, the Colorado Rockies, is big, strong and moves well in the shortstop. My dream is to be a big leaguer, and I am working on it, you never know when you will get the chance and you must be ready."
Flores is a rookie (to the VWL), but his recent hot hitting has moved him into the three hole in the Bravos batting order which has much older and experienced players.? Flores is showing he can more than hold his own in the VWL.??? While there are current big leaguers playing in the VWL, the talent level is around AA level.? It should be very interesting to see where Flores starts his 2011 season.
