The Mets and their fans were taken on an emotional roller coaster this past season, going from hopeful to hopeless, back to hopeful, then landing in a cold bucket of September reality.

"We're definitely not satisfied with where we're at," Michael Conforto told reporters after the team was eliminated from playoff contention on Sept. 25. "We want to play in October. That's the goal. I think we have the guys in here to do it. We have to put six months of baseball together and we didn't do that this year."

The bullpen has been the default answer when media and fans debate what the Mets need to improve when building a better team for 2020. However, for me, it's third on the list...

Matz wanted to keep it close 00:01:43
New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz knows he let his team down but the team isn't giving up hope just yet.

As Jorge Alfaro stepped into the batter's box with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth inning, Steven Matz knew he had to be careful with his pitches.

Alfaro's second-inning solo shot to left field gave Miami an early 1-0 lead, which doubled to 2-0 following an RBI single to center field by Migual Rojas. The Marlins threatened again when the cleanup hitter arrived at the plate after Matz began the sixth with three straight hits.

The Mets made a mound visit, but the southpaw's 1-1 pitch found too much plate, with the 89-mph slider at Alfaro's belt over the inner half and landing over the right-center field wall for a game-breaking grand slam.

Rockies pound Mets 00:01:05
The Mets postseason hopes continued to fade as the Rockies scored 6 runs in the 4th inning and cruised to a 9-4 win

The Mets started their six-game road trip on the wrong foot Monday at Coors Field in Denver, where they dropped the opener of a three-game series with their 9-4 loss to the Rockies (66-85). >> Box score

Five Takeaways from Monday's game

1) The Mets provided the run support early, highlighted by home runs from CF Brandon Nimmo and 3B Jeff McNeil in the first half of the game. Nimmo set the tone in the top of the first inning, going with an opposite-field solo shot to left and putting the Mets on the board. Two frames later in the top of the third inning, McNeil hit his 21st homer on the season when he ripped a deep fly ball down the right-field line, sneaking inside the foul pole and putting the Mets ahead 3-1.

Smith happy to produce in win 00:01:22
New York Mets first baseman Dom Smith was happy he was able to knock in 4 RBIs after committing a game-ending error the night before.

A day after a costly error in the outfield, Dom Smith's bat led the way for the Mets in an 11-4 win over the Giants. >> Box score

Five things to know about Saturday's game

1) Smith had a tough Friday evening in the outfield, but his fortunes have since changed drastically. After his costly error less than 24 hours earlier, Smith scored the first run of the game with a bomb of a solo home run, which went over the deepest part of Oracle Park, Triples Alley in right-center field. Smith then recorded his second RBI of the game on a single in the fourth inning. As the Mets were padding runs on late in the ninth inning, Smith added two more RBI, bringing his game total to four with a single.

2) Smith was in the game early because Pete Alonso was not. Skipper Mickey Callaway gave Alonso the day off and started Smith at first base, despite Alonso's wishes to play. It paid off with Smith's early performance, but Alonso, despite not starting due to his rare day off, still found a way to contribute. Coming off the bench in the sixth inning, Alonso hit a 444-foot, three-home homer. Alonso reached 75 RBI on the season with the shot, a team rookie record.
