Wayne Hunter

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? Jets starting right tackle Austin Howard knows a different side to Wayne Hunter.

He is of course the most polarizing man on the Jets last year not named Brian Schottenheimer and fans loved to abuse and ridicule Hunter. The Jets starting right tackle last year, Hunter had his ups and downs last year and graded out as the worst lineman on the team, seemingly often victimized off the edge with a good pass rush. But Howard knows a different side to Hunter, who was his mentor and friend.

And on Sunday in St. Louis, Hunter and Howard will meet again on opposing teams. Hunter was traded to the Rams this season for jumbo tight end and reserve offensive lineman Jason Smith.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? Now a Jet, former Rams first round pick Jason Smith won?t admit to any special emotions or feeling this Sunday in St. Louis. Instead, he?s having too much fun in green and white to admit to that.

Smith endured an up and down tenure with the Rams, where four years ago he was a first round pick. Expectations were high, some of which he met and some of which were unfulfilled and led him to becoming a bit of a whipping boy among the Rams fan base. He was traded to the Jets this season in exchange for the much maligned Wayne Hunter and with his new team he?s primarily been used as a jumbo tight end.

There?s no extra feelings for Smith this week leading up to a return to the team that drafted and then three years later traded him. ??I play for the Jets and that?s my life now,? Smith told The Jets Blog.

"They?re like sharks. ?If they don?t like you, they let you know right off the bat. And even if you?re doing good, they might just not like you for the heck of it. It?s brutal over there. ?Those fans, they know what they want, and they pretty much demand it. So if you don?t give it to them, they?ll let you know.?

Some of what's being said by journalists about the Wayne Hunter for Jason Smith trade.

Kimberley Martin of Newsday:

A Jets spokesman told reporters last week that the team would not trade Hunter and his guaranteed $2.45-million contract this season. But general manager Mike Tannenbaum apparently changed his mind during the past few days.

If you have eyes or ears and are a Jets fan, then you probably know that Wayne Hunter is in hot water. ?The temperature of said water starts to go up a few degrees once the coach has effectively put his player on notice. ?While we're not to a rolling boil just yet, Jets Confidential notes that Chris Mortensen has some close ties with the Jets, and that through those connections, we can deduce if he's putting this on Twitter, then it's not looking for for the Jets (current) starting right tackle.

The interesting thing is that there's been very little buzz about actual names anywhere so far, which leads me to think that the Jets are back at it, exploring either potential (1) trade possibilities or (2) players they have tight connections with already that are free agents (i.e. Vernon Carey).

Stay tuned ...?

There is never a dull moment in Jets land, and the last six months have served as a constant reminder.?After a 2011 season filled with great expectations ended in a downward spiral and an equally - if not more - dramatic?off-season dominated headlines, there is little doubt all eyes will be on the New York Jets in 2012.?And while Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Rex Ryan will all dominate the majority of the conversation, there is another name that also deserves just as much consideration: General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.
