9/8/17 | The NHL held a press conference today at Citi Field to promote the Winter Classic between the Rangers and Sabres this January 1.

Ryan McDonagh and Rick Nash were representing the Rangers at the press conference.

McDonagh said, "thank you to the Mets, NHLPA, NHL and Bridgestone to help set up this amazing experience we get to encounter during the season. There are some defining moments that shape the Winter Classic so I know that both teams will compete very hard when it's time and we can add to this great tradition that the Winter Classic has brought to our game. Walking around the stadium today with Rick and talking about the venue, it seems like there isn't a bad sightline for any fan, very steep, you will be able to see the game pretty close and take in what should be a great experience. You never know when you are going to get an opportunity like this again so we are very fortunate, the Sabres and Rangers, to represent this year's game for the Winter Classic. We will do our best to put on a good show and make some noise around the league, it's a day where everyone tunes in and watches the game. It will be exciting, fun and a great time."

The NHL's premier regular season event took?place in Washington, D.C. on Thursday and there are reports that the 2016 Winter Classic could be headed back to Boston, Massachusetts.

The NHL is clearly starting to recycle teams that have taken part in the event. Playing another game in Boston would surely bring in the television ratings, but it's been done before. In a recent Puck Daddy article, Josh Cooper proposed 15 ideas to revitalize the Winter Classic, one of which was to have the Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins play at Beaver Stadium.

Relegated to the back page and beyond on most days in the New York/New Jersey area, for one day in January, hockey was king.

The sights were incredible. Gazing upon Yankee Stadium decked out in NHL logos was quite a sight. There was a buzz even before you entered the stadium. With media crews working to get fan interviews and photos, it was clear that this event was so, so much more than just a regular game.

8/19/13: (7:17PM) The Rangers have begun alerting season subscribers, via Dom, about a window in which they can purchase tickets to the Stadium Series games at Yankee Stadium against the Devils and Islanders.

The team is offering tickets to season subscribers and doing so in two games packs and selling the same number of seats that the season subscriber has a Madison Square Garden. The seats for both games in the pack are at the same location.

The team will offer all season subscribers the chance to purchase tickets but in different stages. Priority to purchase is based on "current seating levels and tenure to allow equivalent access."

According to The Fourth Period, the NHL is discussing the idea of having additional outdoor games next season, besides the Winter Classic, and NY and LA are being considered as venues.

Dating back to last year, there have been rumblings about a non-winter classic game happening at Yankee Stadium.

Adam Rotter: I heard the same kind of rumblings a few weeks ago about an outdoor game, most likely at Yankee Stadium, at some point next season. The date and opponent are still TBA but it if it happens, it will likely be a regional opponent like the Islanders or Devils. It is not clear if getting an outdoor game would impact the Rangers getting the Winter Classic in the future.

At ESPN.com, Pierre LeBrun lists five Winter Classic games that he would like to see and puts the Bruins and Rangers at Yankee Stadium second on the list.

LeBrun writes "NBC would obviously drool over this matchup. And it?s almost a guarantee it will happen over the next five years, and why not?"

The Pinstripe Bowl, which is held at Yankee Stadium and has prevented the Rangers from hosting the game in the past, runs through at least December 2013.

At ESPN Insider, Craig Custance writes that the NHL should take a shot at putting together a double header for the Winter Classic that would include games in unique places that likely couldn't hold the game due to logistics or seating issues.

He thinks that a game between the Rangers and Devils in Central Park could work as would a game between the Penguins and Caps at the National Mall.

Custance writes "Keep the crowds small for logistical reasons but make it a television spectacle, with unlimited access to the NBC cameras. It might be a money loser, but would still fill a New Year's Day television spot and create goodwill among fans. You might even make a few sponsors happy. This is even a better idea if Jan. 1 is opening day."

Was at the game and sat in section 113 right behind the philly net. Most of my section was NY ranger season subscribers, so it was nice to be surrounded by Rangers fans. The flyers fans that sat by me weren't to harsh, yea they gave it to use pretty good when they were up 2-0 but after that they were silent most of the night. Best part of the night was Larry, (who dances at mostly every rangers game) was 1 Section over and they played the song he dances too and our whole section erupted and he got up and did his dance. Philly fans didn't know what was going on so I explained to them who he was and they said, they had a guy who did that also. Later in the game they showed the Flyers guy who dances for them, he was awful and we started chanting LARRY'S BETTER!! LARRY'S BETTER!! It was a great game, and a great experience. Not easy to see the game but as far as how much fun it was I would def go again if the Rangers were involved, hopefully in NY.

The following is my review of the 2012 Winter Classic as fan without a ticket but with a great tailgating party and a victorious attitude.

As a partial-plan holder, my options to purchase a ticket were limited. As such, I did not attend the game but decided to accompany a co-worker and his friends to the ballpark for a tailgate party. I work in south jersey and my co-worker and friends are all Flyers fans. While I debate in my head how this will end, I arrive at the house for the convoy at 8:00AM and find several Flyers fans awaiting departure. The fans are calm, as it is early, and my Rangers gear is welcomed but they know I am the lone fan. I knew going into this event my attendance as a Rangers fan would be isolated but I forge on knowing that the men I am with are not only fans, but gentlemen, and their demeanor reflects their attitude.

As the part departs Hamilton, New Jersey, I am welcomed not only as a fan, but as an equal in this experience which anxiously awaits the game with great anticipation. Following the pick-up of the tailgate food at the local deli, we depart for Philadelphia. We get on the road quickly and following a brief stop in Burlington, New Jersey to pick up the final member of our party.

During his press conference following the Winter Classic, Gary Bettman said on the NHL Network that there has been considerable debate in the league office over whether to allow teams to play regular season outdoor games that are not the Winter Classic.

Bettman says that the league is tightly controlling the amount of outdoor games that are being put on.

I had wondered in the past if it would be possible for the Rangers to play a game outside in the NY area that wasn't the Winter Classic.

Season subscriber Cliff emailed me some of his stories and thoughts from his trip down to Philadelphia for the Winter Classic:

Had center ice seats - but last row of place - see pic with Linc in background.? Moved down to awesome 300 center seats in 3rd.

My 12 year old stirred it up with some Flyers fans with 2 minutes to go in game.? They told him to hit the Turnpike and go back to NY.? My son calmly said "no thanks - I'd rather stay and look at the scoreboard".? They went silent after that.

It's Philadelphia, it's a huge two points for us. There is a lot of hoopla over this regular season game but we need to worry about playing our game and finding a way to win.

Torts also said that it was an honor to play in the game and that he is glad that it is finally here.

Update: 9:56AM:I think we have a winner. It is a multi-day event with the young stars game, the skills competition and then the game. It would give the league a great chance to showcase it's players to a wide audience in a unique setting. The Rangers can hold Alumni games or fan skates there. It would take place about a month after the Pinstripe Bowl and still be a few months before the baseball season.

In Newsday, Neil Best spoke with John Collins of the NHL who said that the Winter Classic won't likely come to New York until 2014 at the earliest.

He says that Met Life stadium is an option, but with both the Jets and the Giants playing there, it is doubtful that the stadium will have enough time to accommodate building a rink.

Best says that Yankee Stadium is the preferred venue to hold the Winter Classic which will become available after 2013.
