This morning at the World Junior Championship, the Canadians had a minor scare after they found themselves in a 2-0 hole early against Slovakia. With two goals from Ryan Strome (hockey news cover, right) the Canadians roared back to score four times in the second and twice in the third for a 6-3 win.

In Team USA's 8-0 win over Germany today JT Miller scored the seventh goal with a pretty nifty move.

That goal appeared to trigger Miller as Chris Peters writes, at the United States of Hockey, that Miller wasn't doing enough before then. Following the goal Miller used his speed, was more physical and was just more involved as the game went on.

Early this morning the World Junior Championships kicked off in Ufa, Russia. Yes, actual hockey was played with actual current and future NHLers participating. The Islanders have three representatives in the WJCs; top draft picks Ryan Strome and Griffin Reinhart are skating for team Canada -- apparently doing their best impressions of the bad guys from Mighty Ducks -- while 2012 second round pick Ville Pokka is on the Finnish team.

All three players participated in the opening games today and racked up some points. Ryan Strome had a goal and two helpers and was +3 in Team Canada's 9-3 rout of Germany. Strome was centering a line with Jonathan Drouin (draft eligible in '13) and Brett Ritchie (2nd round to Dallas in 2011). Griffin Reinhart didn't get on the score sheet. As for Pokka, he had an assist and was +1 in Finland's 5-1 win over Latvia.

If you're looking to actually watch some hockey on your TV, the NHL Network in the US is airing 15 games plus highlights of the tournament. Your next chance to see the Isles' two Canadians are Friday at 4:30am, or 5:30pm on the replay, while Pokka and the Fins are not scheduled to appear. Steve Mears, former Isles play-by-play man, will be calling these games with ESPN's EJ Hradek. For a complete schedule, check out this post from Lighthouse.

On hoe he has progressed so far, Assistant GM/Hartford GM Jim Schoenfeld told Blueshirts United:

[sny-box color=E6F1FF]"JT is a very interesting player in our organization. He is kind of like a throwback; a good two-way player, but he is strong and hard on the puck. He sees the ice well, has a good shot and can make plays so we see him as someone who has the makings of being a complete hockey player. He wants to learn and he was telling me that he was starting to 'get it.'" He is starting to understand his game, how it applies to the AHL level and how difficult it was to make the transition. You could almost see week by week as his play would incrementally was getting stronger and I would say over the last few weeks he has been our best forward. [/sny-box]

I feel that that perfectly describes why Miller was drafted by the Rangers. That is everything that John Tortorella wants in his players and we saw how competitive and good Miller was in Traverse City. He seems like someone that was built to play under John Tortorella.

Of the returning players, Kreider was probably the most consistent. There was only one game where he was hard to notice, bet you can guess which one. Yeah, the Canadians neutralized his speed and skill well in that game, so that hurt, but I am looking past that game, just this once. I gushed over Kreider in my bronze-medal recap. He played with a lot of fire in that game and it was good to see. I have had my doubts about Kreider as a player, but now more than ever, I am convinced he?s going to be something special. I still think he can gain some strength and gain some better defensive awareness, but offensively he has a chance to be dynamic. He was Team USA?s leading goal scorer, with four (no one else had more than two), three of which came on the power play. For much of the tournament, Kreider, Charlie Coyle and Kyle Palmieri were THE best line for the U.S. by a mile. He didn?t have a perfect tournament, but he was very good and I will forever remember the way he spoke after the Canadian game and came out and backed up his words in the bronze game. I feel he?s got MAYBE one more year at BC and then he?ll be ready to go for the NHL.
Chris Peters of the United States of Hockey

...If the Rangers have their way, he will be signed this summer and probably fight for a spot on the roster in training camp. I wrote a lot about how I thought Derek Stepan needed to play at least half a season in Hartford before becoming a Ranger and while that wasn't the case, I think that it could be with Kreider.

I can already picture him beating everyone to a puck in a pre-season game and scoring on a breakaway while everyone marvels at his speed.
