The Yankees appear to be trending toward using an opener on Monday.
Manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Saturday that Domingo German will pitch against the Tigers that day, but would not necessarily say that he would be the starter.
"We haven't decided how we'll do that yet," he said.
Boone has been toying with the idea of using an opener early in the season with Luis Severino on the injured list and CC Sabathia not available until after he serves his five-game suspension.
German made 14 starts last season with the Yankees but struggled at times and proved to be better as a reliever pitching multiple innings out of the bullpen.
The Yankees used an opener once last year, when Jonathan Holder started a Sept. 24 game against the Rays. The Yankees used eight pitchers out of their bullpen with just one -- Sonny Gray -- pitching two innings in a 4-1 win.
