The Yankees and A's seem destined to face eachother in the play-in Wild Card game, and Oakland is threatening to rip home field advantage away from New York.
With the Yanks going 5-5 in their last 10 games and A's going 8-2 over the same span (they're in the midst of a five-game winning streak), Oakland is just 2.0 games behind the Yanks for the top Wild Card spot, which comes with home field in winner-takes-all game.
The Yankees (90-55) have 17 games remaining, while the A's (89-57) have 16.
While the Yankees' shot at winning the AL East seems dead (they trail the Red Sox by 9.0 games). The A's have chance to win the AL West, where they trail the Astros by 3.0 games.
If the A's overtake the Astros, it would likely make the Wild Card game a rematch of last season's epic Yankees/Astros ALCS.
For now, though, the Yanks and A's (who split their six-game season series) remain on track to do battle.
No matter what happens, the playoff teams in the American League will almost certainly be the Red Sox (AL East leaders), Indians (AL Central leaders), Astros (AL West leaders), Yankees and A's. The closest team to Oakland and the second Wild Card spot is the Rays. who are 8.0 games back.
