A game-worn Babe Ruth Yankees jersey from the late 1920s became the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever on Saturday when it fetched $5.64 million during an auction at Yankee Stadium, according to the Associated Press.
A Ruth jersey from 1920 held the previous record at $4,415,658, according to Hunt Auctions, which handled the sale.
The jersey was one of a number of Ruth items up for auction, mementos given up by Ruth's grandchildren. They included a bat, cleats and an autographed ball.
"It took me two years to decide to do this, and it's kind of like saying goodbye to family," Linda Ruth Tosetti, Ruth's granddaughter, told NBC News earlier in the week. "I can sleep at night because I'm not afraid somebody's gonna hit me over the head to steal them."
