After being hit by a pitch and forced out of Monday night's win against the Reds, Yankees third baseman Chase Headley woke up Tuesday feeling better than expected.
"Really better than I anticipated,'' Headley told George A King of the New York Post. "I am sore but when I woke up this morning I felt better and better after I got some treatment.
"I was pleasantly surprised and happy it wasn't worse,'' said Headley.
Manager Joe Girardi said yesterday he was waiting to see how Headley responded to some working out before deciding whether or not the third baseman would be available to help off the bench in Tuesday's game. Headley wound up pinch hitting for Ronald Torreyes in the ninth inning of New York's 5-3 loss.
When asked if he would return to the lineup on Thursday after the Yankees' off day on Wednesday, Headley said, "I would think so but I can't say for sure.''
