With CC Sabathia on the mound, the Yankees looked to complete their sweep of the Red Sox on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
Sabathia, though, didn't leave the Yankees on track for a win. He exited the game after a rain delay in the 5th inning. His final line: 4.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 5 K, HR.
The lefty worked into trouble in the 1st inning, allowing a leadoff double to Mookie Betts, who came around to score on a Hanley Ramirez groundout. Ramirez wouldn't be done driving in runs.
Sabathia worked around two singles in the 2nd inning to keep the Red Sox at just one run but would have no such luck in the 3rd inning. Betts and Andrew Benintendi kicked off the inning with a pair of hits then. Ramirez plated Betts with a single as Gleyber Torres saved a second run coming in with a diving stop. J.D. Martinez, though, would drive home a second run of the inning, giving the Sox a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Eduardo Rodriguez kept the Yankees' bats stifled and Boston held a 3-0 lead heading into the 5th. Ramirez would lead off the top of the 5th with a solo home run before the game halted play due to the rain. When the game resumed, Sabathia remained in the dugout.
Sabathia's ERA now sits at 2.23.
