Red Sox LHP Chris Sale has landed on the disabled list with mild left shoulder inflammation and will miss Thursday's start against the Yankees.
The Yankees will instead face LHP Brian Johnson, who tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Twins on July 26. He started the season out of the bullpen but joined the rotation in late June. Johnson has a 3.45 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 27 games, including six starts.
Rick Porcello will start for Boston on Saturday, while Nathan Eovaldi will start on Sunday.
As for Sale, the Red Sox are hopeful that he won't miss much time. "We're not hiding anything," Sale said, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe. "This is a little soreness."
RHP Brandon Workman was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Sale's place on the roster.
