One Yankees fan is about to be disappointed.
Bryce Harper has long been coveted by Yankees fans and while the team has indicated it is not pursuing him this offseason (although they're a fully functioning Death Star, as Brian Cashman noted) some are still holding out hope that the slugger will don pinstripes.
One fan, a waiter and Bronx native, must have thought he unearthed the ultimate scoop this week when a patron he mistook for Harper told him he was signing with the Yankees.
Except it was not Harper, it was Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound 26-year-old with a beard has a similar makeup to Harper -- who checks in at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds and is also 26 years old.
The waiter thought he was serving the free-agent seeking a record $400 million contract and Williams, who made $569,500 last season, played along and told him he was going to be a Yankee.
Williams tweeted about the encounter on Thursday night and said the waiter was very happy.
Our waiter tonight thought I was Bryce Harper so of course I played along and told him I was signing with the Yankees. He was very happy because he was from the Bronx.- Trevor Williams (@MeLlamoTrevor) December 28, 2018
He did not reveal the name or location of the restaurant or if he ultimately came clean to the waiter before the fan could start bragging to his friends.
Hopefully he left a decent tip at the very least.
Especially if you are pretending to be a $400 million man.
