Sabathia threw 64 pitches in four-plus innings, allowing one run on three hits before departing in the bottom of the fifth with a tight hamstring. The injury was quickly diagnosed as a strain.
Brett Gardner hit an RBI single to score Chase Headley in top of the fifth, tying the game at 1-1. In the seventh, Headley's solo home run gave the Yankees the lead. But Eric Young Jr.'s solo blast in the eighth tied things right back up and eventually forced extra innings.
Young Jr. struck again in the bottom of the 11th, hitting an infield single to shortstop to score Andrelton Simmons and secure the Angels' walk-off win.
The Yankees' loss ended their six-game winning streak and evened their series with the Angels at 1-1. The rubber match in Anaheim is set for Wednesday at 10:07 p.m. ET.
