Sam Darnold was all smiles Wednesday as he took in pre-game warmups at Yankee Stadium. It might have been the gorgeous weather, but Darnold's got another reason to be so happy these days.
The Jets quarterback is delighted by the addition of running back Le'Veon Bell to Gang Green's offense this offseason. He's so geeked about it he's already been watching film of Bell's moves.
"I love it," Darnold said a few hours before the Yankees played host to the Detroit Tigers. "What's not to love about it? Le'Veon is a great player. He's very instinctual, too. He's very quarterback-friendly, which I've noticed watching his tape a little bit.
"As a quarterback, you can sense when time is running out and you start looking for guys and Le'Veon's always right there. He was always in Ben's vision," Darnold adding, referring to Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.
"I'm looking forward to that, whenever I need (Bell), him to kind of be that security blanket that I need to just check it down and he can get yards after the catch. I'm really excited about that."
Darnold is also eager for the Jets' offseason program to begin on Monday, and said he's been trying to keep in touch with new coach Adam Gase "within the guidelines of the rules."
The QB has also seen the new Jets uniforms, which are scheduled to be unveiled officially on Thursday and they are "awesome," he said. Darnold will be part of the group of Jets showing off the uniforms on Thursday.
"Yeah, a little modeling," Darnold joked. "It'll be awesome, a good time."
Speaking of uniforms, Darnold got a nifty souvenir in the Bronx - a pinstriped No. 14 jersey with "Darnold" stripped across the back. Obviously, that's Darnold's jersey number with the Jets. (In case you're wondering, Tyler Wade currently wears No. 14 for the Yanks).
Yankees manager Aaron Boone stopped by to chat about USC - both men went to Southern Cal. Overall, the Jets QB seemed to enjoy his visit.
"It's a great environment," Darnold said. "I'm really excited to see how the fans react to the certain plays and all that. I know how they react in a football stadium. It'll be fun to see them interact with baseball players and all the other fans here."
During Darnold's few minutes with reporters, someone joked to QB1 that he had waited until it was 60 or so degrees out to come to the Stadium. In response, Darnold quipped: "And I'm still wearing a beanie. I had to wait for the good weather. It's beautiful out here, a great day for baseball."
