Yankee Stadium reportedly ranks the worst in food sanitation among all MLB parks, according to ESPN and Outside the Lines.
OTL collected more than 16,000 food-safety inspection reports from health departments that monitor all 111 North American facilities among the four major sports. It found that Yankee Stadium had a 79.07 percent violation rate, which ranked the worst among all MLB stadiums and 102nd out of 107 applicable venues. (There was not enough data for four venues.)
Dan Smith, Yankees president of hospitality at Legends, food service provider at Yankee Stadium, issued a statement saying they disagree with ESPN's reporting entirely.
"We treat food safety with the utmost care. We disagree with the ESPN report, whose methodology is unexplainable," the statement read.
"If any violation is pointed out, it is addressed and corrected immediately. As a result, in 2018, all of our food stands received an A-level grade, which is the highest level in New York City."
Of the 43 outlets inspected at Yankee Stadium, 34 of them contained high-level violations. OTL notes that six locations contained "raw, cooked or prepared food is aduleterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated or not discarded," according to ESPN.
ESPN also notes that inspectors found hot food at improper temperatures and "filth, flies or food/refuse/sewage-associated flies" in food and/or non-food areas at a Legends level location.
Another inspection report noted how one employee manning one concession stand did not have adequate personal cleanliness based on his/her "outer garment [that] was soiled with a possible contaminant" and how his/her hair restraint was not worn in an area where food is prepared, according to ESPN.
Among other New York/New Jersey venues, Barclays Center ranked 93rd overall (63.16 percent), Citi Field 86th (55.17 percent), MetLife Stadium 39th (26.36 percent) and Madison Square Garden 31st (20 percent).
Overall, Spectrum Center, home of the Charlotte Hornets, ranked the worst at 92 percent, while Oracle Arena, home of the Golden State Warriors, had the cleanest venue with a 1.12 percent violation rate.
