CC Sabathia cannot believe that Manny Machado and Bryce Harper are still free agents.
The Yankees starting pitcher, who re-signed a one-year deal with the Yankees in November, expressed his shock at the current state of free agency this week on his podcast, R2C2, with Ryan Ruocco.
"It's crazy. So crazy to me," Sabathia said. "I don't know what's happening...I have no answers. I just think it's f---ing nuts."
It is not just the top free agents still unsigned in February that has the left-hander flabbergasted, too, but also the guys behind them.
"You got Adam Jones out here a free agent. You got Gio Gonzalez out here. These are quality big league players that can help teams win and they're not being signed," he said.
Sabathia also pointed to something his former teammate, Alex Rodriguez, recently brought up about how the game's revenue has increased but salaries have not.
"The game's been growing. Every team's making money so the salaries should go up. It is what it is," Sabathia said. "If a guy is making 40 f---ing million dollars a year it is what it is. The sport can handle it."
While the Yankees have not aggressively pursued Machado or Harper, Sabathia is still confident in the moves the team did make this offseason -- which included trading for James Paxton, re-signing J.A. Happ and Zach Britton and adding Troy Tulowitzki, DJ LeMahieu and Adam Ottavino.
"We've done some good things, I think," he said. "I think the Paxton move gets overlooked just because it was so early in the offseason. Nobody really talks about us signing that guy - I mean, or trading for that guy - I mean, that guy could win the Cy Young. He's got that type of stuff. So, you know, adding him with [Luis Severino] and [Masahiro Tanaka], I mean it's going to be huge. I think our moves are very underrated."
