One name that is hot in baseball circles and could interest the Mets for their GM job does not seem ready to jump to Flushing.

Friends of Tim Naehring say that the highly respected Yankees vice president of baseball operations is unlikely to leave his current team. Though rival scouts believe that Naehring would be a fit for the Mets, folks who know him call a move unlikely.

Naehring, 50, has been asked to interview for several managerial jobs, and has had opportunities to join other front offices, but has opted to remain a trusted advisor to Brian Cashman. As our friend John Harper wrote last year, Naehring serves a Gene Michael-type role for the Yanks, and he is happy there.

Though friends say that Naehring would not rule out any opportunity, he is content, and not one of the game's more ambitious job-seekers.

"I doubt he would leave Cashman," said one friend. Naehring, understandably, declined comment.

Relations between the Mets and Yankees are generally rotten anyway, which would further complicate the situation. In any case, Naehring is just one of many names that will arise over the next few months. Expect a slow drip of news and rumors before the teams chooses its next leader.

Orioles All-Star Manny Machado has been the subject of trade rumors for months. The Yankees have been among the teams rumored to be pursuing him. Machado, himself, liked an Instagram post of him in a Yankees uniform (and ones of other teams).

And on Monday, he posed for a picture with three players who could be future teammates.

Given he won't be attempting to defend his Home Run Derby crown, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge is looking to relax and take in the All-Star Game festivities in his second go around.

The 26-year-old Yankees slugger, one of the top three leading vote-getters among American League outfielders, will bat sixth and start in left field for the AL in Tuesday's All-Star Game.

Though he said "it's been a while" since he last batted sixth -- Sept. 10, 2017, was the last time, he said he was glad he was starting for the second year a row.

The Yankees - on pace to win 106 games - are on vacation with the rest of baseball. But when they come back from the All-Star break, they will have to undergo some changes.

That's an amazing statement, but the reality is if the season ended today, the Yankees would be a wild card team because the Red Sox have been that much better.

The reports that the Yankees were unwilling to trade any of their top 10 prospects in a Manny Machado deal have quickly turned false.

New York is still in the running for Machado, and though The Post reported a top-10 prospects wouldn't be in any deal, they learned otherwise on Sunday. Another source said the Yankees are willing to deal away one of their prized youngsters, with OF Estevan Florial, RHP Albert Abreu, RHP Chance Adams, and SS/2B Thairo Estrada all on that list.

The Orioles are reportedly looking for young pitching, and the biggest hold up on a Machado-to-Yankees deal is New York's unwillingness to deal their top pitching prospect, LHP Justus Sheffield. Because of this, the Dodgers and Phillies are the strongest suitors to land MLB's biggest trade chip by the July 31 deadline.

The Yankees played .667 baseball through their first 81 games of the season. But after going into the All-Star break having lost six of their last 14 games, they remain hungry for more.

"Ultimately we have to be better if we want to win the division and get to where we want to be, which is to win the World Series," Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner said, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, after Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians. I'm pleased with the way that we played in the first half, but I'm not pleased that we're not in first place in the division."

Since outslugging the Red Sox 11-1 in their series finale on July 1, the Yankees have gone 8-6. Boston, meanwhile, won 12 of its last 13 games heading into the All-Star break, as the Yankees moved from a first-place tie to 4 1/2 games back. The defending champion Astros, since July 1, have gone 9-4 and own the second-best record in baseball.

That said, Yankees manager Aaron Boone isn't focused on the standings in July.

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has decided to opt out of the 2018 All-Star Game on July 17, per MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

The reason Chapman has pulled himself out is due to the pain he continues to feel in his left knee. The flame-throwing lefty has been dealing with tendinitis in his knee for a few weeks now, and though he is available for the Yankees in their final series before the All-Star break with the Indians, he doesn't want to push himself in a game that is only for show.

"It's an honor to be selected to an All-Star Game," Chapman said through an interpreter. "Your peers vote for you, managers, fans and all that. Any time you have an opportunity like that, you want to participate. At the end of the day, I think it was a smart decision for me to help me recover and to get ready for the second half, one that's going to be very demanding and very exciting."

Andy Martino, SNY.tv | Twitter | The Yankees remain an aggressive suitor for Baltimore shortstop Manny Machado, but their unwillingness to offer pitching prospect Justus Sheffield could leave them behind the Dodgers and Phillies, according to major league sources. The Brewers are also involved, but are less aggressive than the other three teams. Arizona is said to be out for now.

The Orioles want young pitching and, ideally, an infielder. Brandon Drury would likely be part of any Machado deal.

With or without Machado, the Yankees could soon pivot to a pursuit of Detroit pitcher Michael Fulmer. So far, contact between the Tigers and Yankees has been minimal, according to sources. That may be because Brian Cashman is holding out hope of acquiring Jacob deGrom. Once he realizes how unlikely the Mets are to send deGrom to the Bronx, he could move quickly on Fulmer.

The Yankees have checked in on Wheeler - but, as always, it's hard to imagine the teams actually working out a deal.

Familia and Cabrera are the obvious trade candidates, because both are free agents at the end of the season. Wheeler has one additional year of control, and teams are showing interest. If the Mets can get, say, a top ten prospect and another depth piece, they will likely move him.

Once again, the ace-like stuff that the Yankees expect from Sonny Gray showed its face on Wednesday night in a shutout performace against the Orioles. And this performance couldn't have come at a better time for the young righty.

Gray, who has been struggling mightily of late, was going up against the worst team in baseball in Baltimore. Some believed this start to be the last straw for the 28-year-old given the O's 26-66 record entering the game. If Gray coughed up a hitting clinic, the Yankees may have had to reasses their options.

Luckily for Gray, his arsenal was deadly this time around, giving up only three hits while striking out eight over six innings. But, Yankee fans, we've seen this movie play out before. Gray has a dominant start, but can't sustain that success over a longer stretch.

Yankees RHP Sonny Gray has been a pinata for opposing hitters for most of this season, and could be in danger of losing his spot in the starting rotation.

Gray, who has a 12.27 ERA (15 earned runs in 11 innings) over his last three starts, toes the rubber on Wednesday night when the Yankees battle the Orioles. Overall, Gray has a 5.85 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 17 starts this season.

"It's easy to get down in the dumps and walk around with your head down," Gray said after his most recent start. "I need to stay positive and continue to put in the work, and hopefully turn this thing around. That's all I can really do at this point, is continue to put in the work and continue to try to find the solution."

For anyone who has played baseball, getting in front of the ball in the field is preached from Little League and on. And when the game is on the line and it's bases loaded with two outs, coaches normally yell, "Get dirty!" to their infielders. That basically translates to do whatever it takes to get that final out.

But Yankees 1B Greg Bird's fundamentals went out the door on Tuesday night when that exact situation arose.

Yankees C Gary Sanchez could begin a rehab assignment on Sunday with the goal of returning to the team after the All-Star break, reports Erik Boland of Newsday.

Sanchez took batting practice on the field, ran the bases, and ran in the outfield prior to Tuesday night's game.

The 25-year-old has been increasing baseball activities as of late after missing several weeks with a strained right groin.

The Yankees believe that trading for LHP J.A. Happ is realistic, but as of now the asking price on him is too high, reports Jon Heyman of FanCred.

SNY's Andy Martino previously reported that the Yankees wonder whether Happ would help in a playoff series against the Astros.

Happ was shelled in the Blue Jays' 8-5 loss to the Yankees on Saturday, as he allowed six runs in just 2 2/3 innings. He said after his outing that his struggles could be related to trade rumors.

The thought of Manny Machado donning the pinstripes sounds amazing. The 25-year-old is posting career highs with his .309/.379/.555 slash line, and is on pace to break his home run mark as well with 21 dingers on the year already.

But would the payout be worth it for a player the Yankees could simply be renting for three months?

The price is bound to be steep for Machado, but New York should be able to match it considering their deep trove of prospects. SNY's Andy Martino noted a package that includes top pitching prospect LHP Justus Sheffield and INF Brandon Drury could be in the works if the Yankees are serious...

Andy Martino, SNY.tv | Twitter | What should we make of reports that the Yankees are pursuing Baltimore shortstop Manny Machado

"Take it seriously," said one baseball source with direct knowledge of the situation.

Major league sources went on to say that Baltimore was looking for starting pitching that was close to major league-ready, and perhaps an infield piece if the Yanks won't give up Miguel Andujar. The Yanks might be able to build a package around pitcher Justus Sheffield and infielder Brandon Drury, those sources said...
