Our weekly minor league report canvases the Yankees' farm system providing updates about the organization's top prospects.
Notes: Prospect rankings (via MLBPipeline.com) are club based with overall MLB rank, if appli-cable, in parenthesis. Team records, statistics and current club assignments are through games played August 10, 2018.
No. 1 (No. 27) - Justus Sheffield (LHP) - Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre - ETA 2018
Sheffield finally suffered a blip in what has been a fantastic season. In 1 1/2 innings, Sheffield allowed four runs on four hits and a whopping five walks. The Yankees have been reluctant to bring Sheffield up to the majors and his command has likely been one of the issues (21 walks in last 53 1/3 innings, which is 3.5 walks per nine innings).
No. 2 (No. 46) - Estevan Florial (OF) - High-A Tampa - ETA 2020
Florial might be gearing up for a hot stretch to end the season. In his last three games, Florial is 5-for-12 with a home run, two RBI and just as important, one strikeout. Florial owns a .691 OPS for the season with Tampa (277 PA).
No. 3 (No. 75) - Jonathan Loaisiga (RHP) - Triple-A - ETA 2018
Loaisiga made his first start after coming off the disabled list Friday, allowing one run in 1 1/3 in-nings. The Yankees will likely keep it light with Loaisiga after the 23-year-old over the rest of the season. Loaisiga made his major league debut earlier in the season when the Yankees were in a pinch for a starting pitcher.
No. 4 (No. 77) - Albert Abreu (RHP) - High-A Tampa - ETA 2020
Abreu has made two starts for Tampa after his most recent stint on the disabled list. In 9 1/3 combined innings, Abreu has allowed four runs on nine hits, two walks and he struck out nine batters. In 57 2/3 innings with Tampa this season, Abreu maintains a 4.21 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 61 strikeouts.
No. 5 - Domingo Acevedo (RHP) - Double-A Trenton - ETA 2019
Acevedo is on the seven-day disabled list with upper-arm soreness. In 61 2/3 innings this season, Acevedo owns a 3.06 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 50 strikeouts. As with Florial and Abreu, Acevedo's curtailed season due to injury could have an impact on the overall timeframe of his development.
No. 6 - Anthony Seigler (C) - Rookie Pulaski - ETA 2022
Seigler, the Yankees first round pick in June's First-year Player Draft (No. 23 overall), has just seven hits in his last 36 at-bats. Seigler has struck out just four times in the span, suggesting he is making contact and potentially falling into bad luck.
No. 7 - Clarke Schmidt (RHP) - Short-A Staten Island - ETA 2020
Schmidt did not make a start since the last report. The Yankees' first-round pick in 2017 (No. 16 overall), Schmidt has 10 strikeouts and two walks in the 8 1/3 innings of work since his promotion to Staten Island.
No. 8 - Trevor Stephan (RHP) - Double-A Trenton - ETA 2020
Stephan continues to struggle with Trenton, allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings in his latest outing. The positive out of the start were the seven strikeouts he racked up. Stephen's ERA with Tren-ton sits at 5.37 over 67 innings.
No. 9 - Luis Medina (RHP) - Rookie Pulaski - ETA 2021
Medina had a reversal of fortune after a few solid starts. Medina walked seven batters and struck out five in 2 1/3 innings in his last appearance. Calling Medina electric is true (41 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings), but labeling him as wild is being kind (38 walks in the same timeframe).
No. 10 - Matt Sauer (RHP) - Short-A Staten Island - ETA 2021
Sauer bounced back with a fine one-run effort in 6 1/3 innings. Sauer walked just one batter and struck out seven. The outing lowered his ERA to 4.08 over 53 innings.
